A Genetic Bayesian Approach For Texture-Aided Urban Land-Use/Land-Cover Classification, Wenxue Ju
A Genetic Bayesian Approach For Texture-Aided Urban Land-Use/Land-Cover Classification, Wenxue Ju
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Urban land-use/land-cover classification is entering a new era with the increased availability of high-resolution satellite imagery and new methods such as texture analysis and artificial intelligence classifiers. Recent research demonstrated exciting improvements of using fractal dimension, lacunarity, and Moran’s I in classification but the integration of these spatial metrics has seldom been investigated. Also, previous research focuses more on developing new classifiers than improving the robust, simple, and fast maximum likelihood classifier. The goal of this dissertation research is to develop a new approach that utilizes a texture vector (fractal dimension, lacunarity, and Moran’s I), combined with a new …
Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners And Us Home Center Retailers' Attitudes And Perceptions Of Forest Certification, Polwattage Kushil Perera
Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners And Us Home Center Retailers' Attitudes And Perceptions Of Forest Certification, Polwattage Kushil Perera
LSU Master's Theses
The concept of forest certification, a relatively recent development in forestry, is based on the use of market-based incentives to encourage sustainable forest management practices. Since the majority of forests in US South are privately owned, certifying forests owned by non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners is an important issue. From the demand perspective of certification, pressure from non-governmental environmental organizations and consumer awareness has prompted major wood products retailers to state preferences for certified wood products. In the US, wood product demand in the retail home centers sector is second only to the home building industry. In addition, home center …
Synthesis Of Disubstituted Amino Acids And Peptide Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Gregory Todd Mccandless
Synthesis Of Disubstituted Amino Acids And Peptide Inhibitors Of Amyloid Beta Aggregation, Gregory Todd Mccandless
LSU Master's Theses
The aggregation process of amyloid beta from monomeric peptide to oligomers and fibrils is believed to be connected with the neurological disorder Alzheimer’s disease. The focus of this research is the synthesis of alpha, alpha-disubstituted amino acids and peptide inhibitors of amyloid beta aggregation. The inhibitors are designed to interrupt (or alter) this process by binding to amyloid beta’s central hydrophobic core region (residues 17-20, Leucine-Valine- Phenylalanine-Phenylalanine). Target specificity is achieved via self recognition by basing the inhibitors on the sequence in this region. The inclusion of disubstituted amino acids in the sequence of the inhibitors will provide a blocking …
Landscape Analysis Of Vegetation Change In Coastal Louisiana Following Hurricanes Katrina And Rita, Gregory Dean Steyer
Landscape Analysis Of Vegetation Change In Coastal Louisiana Following Hurricanes Katrina And Rita, Gregory Dean Steyer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Investigations of hurricane disturbances on coastal vegetated communities are common, but relatively few are comprehensive across broad geographic regions. The 2005 hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, exposed Louisiana coastal landscapes to physical modifications and extensive and prolonged flooding, resulting in measurable physicochemical changes. This research used remote sensing and field investigations to regionally assess (1) porewater salinity and sulfide impacts to and recovery of coastal Louisiana vegetation communities, and (2) the importance of mineral sediment deposition on accretionary processes. Hurricane effects were most direct and prominent in eastern Louisiana from Katrina and western Louisiana from Rita, compared to central Louisiana exposed …
Long-Term Subsidence And Compaction Rates: A New Model For The Michoud Area, South Louisiana, Clint H. Edrington
Long-Term Subsidence And Compaction Rates: A New Model For The Michoud Area, South Louisiana, Clint H. Edrington
LSU Master's Theses
This study examined the stratigraphic record of the Michoud area in East New Orleans, Louisiana to address questions concerning the magnitude of, and processes leading to land-surface subsidence. The hypotheses under review are based on recent geodetic studies, which challenge the widely held position that modern subsidence is primarily a function of shallow sediment compaction. Testing these hypotheses involved constructing a structural cross section of the Michoud area using well logs, chronostratigraphic data, and fault picks, so as to evaluate differential motion along specific faults through time. Employing ages and corrected depths for three key subsurface horizons, long-term (Middle Miocene …
Rice Straw Fiber Polymer Composites: Thermal And Mechanical Performance, Fei Yao
Rice Straw Fiber Polymer Composites: Thermal And Mechanical Performance, Fei Yao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Rice straw fiber can be considered as important potential reinforcing filler for thermoplastic composite because of its lignocellulosic characteristics. It is thus of practical significance to understand and predict the thermal decomposition process of rice straw fibers. A method proposed by Málek, Šesták, and co-workers was used to investigate and model thermal decomposition process of common natural fibers with detailed analysis on rice straw system. Assuming a global model occurring within the entire degradation of natural fibers with consideration of fiber as one pseudo-component, model can be used to describe both isothermal and non-isothermal degradation process of most selected fibers …
Functional Studies On The Extrinsic Proteins Of Photosystem Ii, Haijun Liu
Functional Studies On The Extrinsic Proteins Of Photosystem Ii, Haijun Liu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The function of the PsbO and the PsbR protein in Arabidopsis thaliana were studied. The Arabidopsis mutant psbo1 contains a point mutation in the psbO-1 gene leading to defective expression of the PsbO-1 protein. Functional studies demonstrated both the reducing-side and oxidizing-side of Photosystem II are significantly altered. Using the psbo1 mutant plant as a transgenic host, two plant lines were produced, which contained an N-terminally His6-tagged PsbO-1 protein. Photosystem II closure kinetics demonstrated that the defective double reduction of QB and the delayed exchange of QBH2 with the plastoquinone pool in the psbo1 mutant were effectively restored to the …
Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry For The Analysis Of Collected Bioaerosols, Alton John Dugas
Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry For The Analysis Of Collected Bioaerosols, Alton John Dugas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation was to demonstrate collection, detection and identification of microorganisms from bioaerosols using offline matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) for the analysis of proteins. MALDI-MS intact bacteria techniques were adapted for use with an orthogonal MALDI quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Results indicate the instrument is capable of analyzing intact whole-cells. The first phase was to evaluate three bioaerosol samplers, an Andersen N6 single-stage impactor (AI), a cyclone impactor, and a vacuum filter system. The samplers collected test bioaerosols using a constructed bioaerosol exposure chamber (BEC). The BEC allowed all three samplers to operate in parallel. Each …
A Novel Automated Approach Of Multi-Modality Retinal Image Registration And Fusion, Hua Cao
A Novel Automated Approach Of Multi-Modality Retinal Image Registration And Fusion, Hua Cao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Biomedical image registration and fusion are usually scene dependent, and require intensive computational effort. A novel automated approach of feature-based control point detection and area-based registration and fusion of retinal images has been successfully designed and developed. The new algorithm, which is reliable and time-efficient, has an automatic adaptation from frame to frame with few tunable threshold parameters. The reference and the to-be-registered images are from two different modalities, i.e. angiogram grayscale images and fundus color images. The relative study of retinal images enhances the information on the fundus image by superimposing information contained in the angiogram image. Through the …
The Relationship Between Early Cumulative Caregiver Sensitivity And Children's Later Self-Perception Of Cognitive Competence And Cognitive Performance, Jenna Rae Watson
The Relationship Between Early Cumulative Caregiver Sensitivity And Children's Later Self-Perception Of Cognitive Competence And Cognitive Performance, Jenna Rae Watson
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between children’s experiences of caregiver sensitivity during the first three years of their life and their later self-perceptions of cognitive competence and cognitive performance. Caregiver sensitivity was measured using data that had been collected with the Caregiver Interaction Scale (CIS, Arnett, 1989) during an earlier longitudinal study, the Baton Rouge Early Care Study (BRECES; Pierce & Benedict, 2007). Measures of cognitive competence were derived using the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children (Harter & Pike, 1984) and measures of cognitive performance were derived using the …
Pet/Ct Detectability And Classification Of Simulated Pulmonary Nodules Using An Suv Correction Scheme, Andrew Nicholas Morrow
Pet/Ct Detectability And Classification Of Simulated Pulmonary Nodules Using An Suv Correction Scheme, Andrew Nicholas Morrow
LSU Master's Theses
Positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) together are a powerful diagnostic tool, but imperfect image quality contributes to false positive and false negative diagnoses by an observer despite experience and training. This work investigated a PET standard uptake value (SUV) correction scheme, based on partial volume effect (PVE), on the classification of lesions as benign or malignant in PET/CT images. The correction scheme comprised several steps. The observer drew a region of interest (ROI) around the lesion using the CT dataset. The ROI was blurred with the assumed point spread function (PSF) of the PET scanner then re-sampled …

The purpose of this study is to determine if the Sharpening Math Skills Lab technology-mediated mathematics instructional practices for math-delayed middle school students have positive effects on their mathematics achievement and spatial visualization ability and to gauge student engagement in learning, implementation of the principles of instructional design, and attitudes toward mathematics instruction. The results of a recent meta-analysis report a range of significantly positive to significantly negative effect sizes which establish a need for further evaluation of academic achievement utilizing technology-mediated mathematics programs at the middle school level (Slavin, Lake, & Groff, 2007). The literature (Moreno & Mayer, 2000) …
Teachers' Perspectives On The Unintended Consequences Of High Stakes Testing, David Christopher Charles
Teachers' Perspectives On The Unintended Consequences Of High Stakes Testing, David Christopher Charles
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A mixed methods design was utilized that was divided into three phases to verify and explore high stakes testing’s effects on teachers’ perceptions regarding classroom practices, pressure, and commitment to the educational profession. Phase I utilized previous surveys and a peer review to create a knowledge base to generate a survey instrument that measured the three areas assumed to be affected by high stakes testing (commitment, pressure, and classroom practice). The survey instrument that was created was piloted. Throughout Phase II there was a series of three-step analysis: First, the means and standard deviations from the results of the surveys …
Numerical Simulations Of Flow And Mass Transport In Micro-Fluidic Components For Modular Bio-Analytic Chip Applications, Sudheer D. Rani
Numerical Simulations Of Flow And Mass Transport In Micro-Fluidic Components For Modular Bio-Analytic Chip Applications, Sudheer D. Rani
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Microfluidics has received a great deal of attention in the past decade. The ability of modular microfluidic chips to miniaturize integrate chemical and biological systems (µTAS) can be greatly productive in terms of cost and efficiency. During the design of these modular devices, misalignment of materials, geometrical or both is one of the most common problems. These misalignments can have adverse effect in both pressure driven and electrokinetically driven flows. In the present work, Numerical Simulations have been performed to study the effect of material and geometrical mismatch on the flow behavior and species progression in microfluidic interconnects. In the …
Cluster Kinetics Modeling Of Glassforming Materials, Lisa Ann Brenskelle
Cluster Kinetics Modeling Of Glassforming Materials, Lisa Ann Brenskelle
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work, a new model relating temperature and pressure to dielectric relaxation or viscosity of a glassformer is developed. The model is based upon cluster kinetics, reaction-like mechanisms describing interactions between glassformer monomers and their clusters. Mathematical solutions of population balance equations for monomer and cluster lead to molar concentrations in terms of rate coefficients of the reaction-like mechanisms. These are then related to viscosity or dielectric relaxation time through free volume theory. The resulting equations are tested against data for a variety of pure glassformers, fragile, non-fragile, large, and small molecules over a wide range of temperatures, pressures, …

Limit On The Muon Neutrino Magnetic Moment And A Measurement Of The Ccpip To Ccqe Cross Section Ratio, Serge Arisitde Ouedraogo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A search for the muon neutrino magnetic moment was conducted using the Mini- BooNE low energy neutrino data. The analysis was performed by analyzing the elastic scattering interactions of muon neutrinos on electrons. The analysis looked for an excess of elastic scattering events above the Standard Model prediction from which a limit on the neutrino magnetic could be set. In this thesis, we report an excess of 15.3}6.6(stat)}4.1(syst) elastic scattering events above the expected background. At 90% C.L., we derived a limit on the muon neutrino magnetic moment of 12.7~ 10−10ƒÊB. The other analysis reported in this thesis is a …

Quantifying Twentieth Century Glacier Change In The Sierra Nevada, California, Hassan J. Basagic
Dissertations and Theses
Numerous small alpine glaciers occupy the high elevation regions of the central and southern Siena Nevada, California. These glaciers change size in response to variations in climate and are therefore important indicators of climate change. An inventory based on USGS topographic maps (l :24,000) revealed 1719 glaciers and perennial snow and ice features for a total area of 39.l5 ±7.52 km2. The number of 'true' glaciers, versus non-moving ice, is estimated to be 118, covering 15.87 ± 1.69 Km2. All glaciers were located on north to northeast aspects, at elevations >3000 m. Historical photographs, geologic evidence, …

We present direct upper limits on gravitational wave emission from the Crab pulsar using data from the first 9 months of the fifth science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). These limits are based on two searches. In the first we assume that the gravitational wave emission follows the observed radio timing, giving an upper limit on gravitational wave emission that beats indirect limits inferred from the spin-down and braking index of the pulsar and the energetics of the nebula. In the second we allow for a small mismatch between the gravitational and radio signal frequencies and interpret …

We present the results of the first joint search for gravitational-wave bursts by the LIGO and GEO 600 detectors. We search for bursts with characteristic central frequencies in the band 768-2048 Hz in the data acquired between 22 February and 23 March, 2005 (fourth LSC Science Run-S4). We discuss the inclusion of the GEO 600 data in the Waveburst-CorrPower pipeline that first searches for coincident excess power events without taking into account differences in the antenna responses or strain sensitivities of the various detectors. We compare the performance of this pipeline to that of the coherent Waveburst pipeline based on …

The Use Of Extractable Lipofuscin For Age Determination Of Crustaceans: Reply To Sheehy (2008), H. Rodger Harvey, David H. Secor, Se-Jong Ju
OES Faculty Publications
The heterogeneous mixture of metabolic by-products termed lipofuscin (LF) or age pigments has long been known to accumulate in post mitotic cells with increasing age. In crustaceans several approaches have been developed over the years to track LF accumulation and provide a proxy for chronological age. Histological approaches have been traditionally used for LF determination of crustaceans (e.g. Sheehy et al. 1994, Mar Biol 121:237-245), but over the last decade extraction approaches for neural tissues have been introduced (Ju et al. 1999, Mar Ecol Prog Ser 185:171-179) and tested (Ju et al. 2001, Mar Ecol Prog Ser 224:197-205; 2003, Fish …
Turbulent Lifestyle: Microbial Mats On Earth’S Sandy Beaches—Today And 3 Billion Years Ago, Nora Noffke
Turbulent Lifestyle: Microbial Mats On Earth’S Sandy Beaches—Today And 3 Billion Years Ago, Nora Noffke
OES Faculty Publications
Archean Earth history is very difficult to reconstruct. Until recently, only bacterial cells preserved in chert, microborings, and stromatolites provided the few clues to ancient life. Now, siliciclastic “microbially induced sedimentary structures” (MISS) are adding to our knowledge of both past life and paleoenvironments. MISS rise from the interaction of photoautotrophic microbial mats with physical sediment dynamics in siliciclastic, shallow-marine settings. Archean MISS can be understood through observations of living microbial mats and modern biotic-physical sedimentary processes. Such geobiological studies are key to the interpretation of the early evolution of prokaryotes. For example, the 2.9 Ga Pongola Supergroup, South Africa, …
The Indefinite Metric Of R. Mrugala And The Geometry Of The Thermodynamical Phase Space, Serge Preston, James Vargo
The Indefinite Metric Of R. Mrugala And The Geometry Of The Thermodynamical Phase Space, Serge Preston, James Vargo
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We study an indefinite metric G which was introduced by R. Mrugala and is defined on the contact phase space (P, θ) of a homogeneous thermodynamical system. We describe the curvature properties and the isometry group of the metric G. We established an isomorphism of the space (P, θ, G) with the Heisenberg Lie group Hn, endowed with the right invariant contact structure and the right invariant indefinite metric. The lift of the metric G to the symplectization of contact space (P, θ) and its properties are studied. Finally we introduce the "hyperbolic projectivization" of the space …
Photocatalytic Oxidation Of Ethanol Using Macroporous Titania, Gibert Merle Magpantay
Photocatalytic Oxidation Of Ethanol Using Macroporous Titania, Gibert Merle Magpantay
LSU Master's Theses
Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) using TiO2 is a potential means of remediating poor indoor air quality that is attributed to low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC). In this work, ethanol is chosen as a simple compound representative of VOC’s. The aim of this research is to establish a baseline for the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in ethanol PCO as well as the photonic efficiency of the photoreactor. The PCO conversion could then be enhanced by using photocatalyst having a macroporous structure. A flat plate photoreactor, UV light delivery and a flow system was designed in this work to accomplish ethanol …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Fluid Flow And Heat Transfer In Microchannels, Wynn Allen Phillips
LSU Master's Theses
Microchannels are of current interest for use in heat exchangers where very high heat transfer performance is desired. Microchannels provide very high heat transfer coefficients because of their small hydraulic diameters. In this study, an investigation of fluid flow and heat transfer in microchannels is conducted. A review of the literature published regarding fluid flow and heat transfer in microchannels is provided in this study. A thorough background on the theory of internal convective heat transfer is provided as well. A critical analysis of some of the published heat transfer experiments on microchannels is also given. It was found that …
Differential Geometry In Cartesian Closed Categories Of Smooth Spaces, Martin Laubinger
Differential Geometry In Cartesian Closed Categories Of Smooth Spaces, Martin Laubinger
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The main categories of study in this thesis are the categories of diffeological and Fr\"olicher spaces. They form concrete cartesian closed categories. In Chapter 1 we provide relevant background from category theory and differentiation theory in locally convex spaces. In Chapter 2 we define a class of categories whose objects are sets with a structure determined by functions into the set. Fr\"olicher's $M$-spaces, Chen's differentiable spaces and Souriau's diffeological spaces fall into this class of categories. We prove cartesian closedness of the two main categories, and show that they have all limits and colimits. We exhibit an adjunction between the …

Enriching The State Of Louisiana Secondary English Language Arts Comprehensive Curriculum, Adriane Renee Comeaux
LSU Master's Theses
The primary purpose of this research was to dissect the state of Louisiana’s comprehensive curriculum and make suggestions for enhancement to a document that is intended to set basic standards for education in all public schools throughout the state. While the Louisiana State Department of Education acknowledged a real need for such a document, the one it originally produced fell short of many educators’ expectations. In taking into consideration the diversity of the state’s students and their heritages, the researcher makes suggestions for enriching the English language arts (ELA) curriculum for secondary students by incorporating a wider variety of multicultural, …

Fog-Smog Reactor And Photooxidation Of Naphthalene Within The Fog Condensate In A Uv Light Setup, Neha Shrikant Damle
LSU Master's Theses
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) form a major class of air pollutants. Naphthalene is a commonly found PAH in the atmosphere. Atmospheric fog water contains naphthalene absorbed from surrounding air. The partition coefficient of naphthalene is defined as the ratio of total naphthalene concentration in fog water to total naphthalene concentration in air. The purpose of this research was to determine the partition coefficients of naphthalene for varying reactor temperature. Fog was artificially formed in a predesigned reactor. NaCl aerosols were used as condensation nuclei for fog formation. Fog droplets were exposed to naphthalene vapors in the reactor. The reactor provided …

An Evaluation Of The Perceived Obstacles For Policy Officials Regulating The Post Harvest Treatment Of Raw Oysters To Control The Human Health Vibrio Vulnificus Problem, Amy Leah Oestringer
LSU Master's Theses
Vibrio vulnificus is the leading pathogen linked to seafood-associated deaths. This naturally occurring marine bacterium presents a human health risk when it is consumed in raw oysters. Hospitalization is necessary in 90 % Vibrio vulnificus illnesses and 40% end in death. (CDC) Several guidelines and regulations have been enacted to combat this human health issue, but have failed to reduce the steadily rising illness rate. Post-harvest processing requirements for raw oysters could be used to reduce illness rates. A survey was conducted to measure the perceived obstacles that regulators and industry representatives of the raw oyster industry face in policymaking …

We present a custom UDP flow tuple with an IP address key and a set of simple related statistical attributes. Attributes are used to calculate a per host metric called the UDP work weight which roughly measures the amount of network noise caused by a host. The work weight is used to produce a near real-time sorted top N report for UDP host tuples. We also present a derived attribute based on an algorithm called the UDP guesstimator. The UDP guesstimator roughly classifies port report hosts into various traffic categories including security threats (DOS/scanning) or P2P hosts based on high …
