Adaptive Frame Selection For Enhanced Face Recognition In Low-Resolution Videos, Raghavender Reddy Jillela Jan 2008

Adaptive Frame Selection For Enhanced Face Recognition In Low-Resolution Videos, Raghavender Reddy Jillela

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Performing face detection and recognition in low-resolution videos (e.g., surveillance videos) is a challenging task. To enhance the biometric content in these videos, image-level and score-level fusion techniques can be used to consolidate the information available in successive low-resolution frames. In particular, super-resolution can be used to perform image-level fusion while the simple sum-rule can be used to perform score-level fusion. In this thesis we propose a technique which adaptively selects low-resolution frames for fusion based on optical flow information. The proposed technique automatically disregards frames that may cause severe artifacts in the super-resolved output by examining the optical flow …

Effect Of Circulation Control Blowing Slots On Stall Angles Of A 10:1 Elliptical Airfoil, Jonathan Kweder Jan 2008

Effect Of Circulation Control Blowing Slots On Stall Angles Of A 10:1 Elliptical Airfoil, Jonathan Kweder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Circulation control is a high-lift methodology that can be used on the wing of an aircraft. This technology has been in the research and development phase for over sixty years primarily for fixed wing aircraft when the early models were referred to as "blown flaps." Circulation control works by increasing the near surface velocity of the airflow over the leading edge and/or trailing edge of a specially designed aircraft wing using a series of blowing slots that eject high velocity jets of air. The wing has a rounded trailing edge, and ejects the air tangentially, through these slots inducing the …

Parasitic Drag Analysis Of A High Inertia Flywheel Rotating In An Enclosure, Chad C. Panther Jan 2008

Parasitic Drag Analysis Of A High Inertia Flywheel Rotating In An Enclosure, Chad C. Panther

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are currently millions of people throughout the world who live in isolated, rural communities without electricity. An ongoing effort has been initiated to provide reliable power to such communities. These efforts are being made to utilize renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power to solve this problem. Renewable energy sources can be both intermittent and unpredictable. Thus, an effective energy storage system is sought to store excess energy when available to disperse during times of scarcity.;The use of a high-inertia flywheel was proposed as a means of energy storage due to its simplicity, low cost, and reliability. …

Modeling, Identification And Control Of A Cold Flow Circulating Fluidized Bed, Rupendranath Panday

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) is used extensively in petrochemical industries especially for fluid catalytic cracking, coal combustion or gasification and various other chemical processes. In this work, data are used to identify cold flow circulating fluidized bed's (CFCFB) multiple sub models and to combine them into a single nonlinear model such that solids circulation rate can be estimated from the move air flow and riser aeration fed to the device, and the total pressure drop developed across the riser at extremely different experimental conditions.;The present work begins with a complete black box model of a state-space description arising from the …

Real-Time Implementation Of A Statcom On A Wind Farm Equipped With Doubly Fed Induction Generators, Wei Qiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Voltage stability is a key issue to achieve the uninterrupted operation of wind farms equipped with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) during grid faults. This paper investigates the application of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to assist with the uninterrupted operation of a wind turbine driving a DFIG, which is connected to a power network, during grid faults. The control schemes of the DFIG rotor- and grid-side converters and the STATCOM are suitably designed and coordinated. The system is implemented in real-time on a real time digital simulator. Results show that the STATCOM improves the transient voltage stability and therefore …

Exploring The Sources Of Turkish Pre-Service Chemistry Teachers’ Chemistry Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Esen Uzuntiryaki

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study aimed to examine the underlying sources in developing chemistry self-efficacy beliefs of Turkish pre-service chemistry teachers. For this purpose, the College Chemistry Self-efficacy Scale (CCSS) was administered to 20 pre-service chemistry teachers. Then, phenomenological approach was employed and semi-structured interviews were conducted with five pre-service teachers selected based on their scores on the CCSS to identify the underlying sources. The emerging meanings and self-reported sources of participants’ chemistry self-efficacy beliefs were analysed according to Bandura’s sources of self-efficacy. Results indicated that mastery experiences were the major source of self-efficacy beliefs, supporting the tenets of social cognitive theory. Physiological …

Paper 2: Virtual Vs. Concrete Manipulatives In Mathematics Teacher Education: A Call For Research, Annita W. Hunt

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

Are virtual manipulatives as effective as concrete (hands-on) manipulatives to build conceptual understanding of number concepts and relationships in pre-service middle grades teachers? In the past, the use of concrete manipulatives in mathematics courses for Clayton State University’s preservice middle grades teachers has proven to be a very effective way to build conceptual understanding of a variety of mathematical topics. This paper presents an argument for the need for research into the usefulness of virtual manipulatives for enhancing mathematics teacher education and their potential to supplement (or replace?) concrete manipulatives.

Characteristics Of Preservice Teachers In Multi-Campus Settings: Using Demographics And Epistemological Beliefs To Unpack Stereotypes, Beryl Exley, Sue Walker, Joanne Brownlee Jan 2008

Characteristics Of Preservice Teachers In Multi-Campus Settings: Using Demographics And Epistemological Beliefs To Unpack Stereotypes, Beryl Exley, Sue Walker, Joanne Brownlee

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The last two decades have seen the massification of preservice teacher education and critiques of its quality in Australia and elsewhere. Part of the strategy of massification has been the establishment of satellite campuses in growth corridors. This paper enters the debate on the quality of preservice candidates. The purpose of this research is two-fold: to note comparisons and parallels in demographics across main and satellite campuses, and to advance research on the epistemological beliefs of first year preservice teachers according to campus location. In doing so, we offer an alternative metric for characterising these two groups of students. The …

Will They Know Enough?: Pre-Service Primary Teachers’ Knowledge Base For Teaching Integrated Social Sciences, Mallihai Tambyah

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

A significant issue in primary teacher education is developing a knowledge base which prepares teachers to teach in a range of subject areas. In Australia, the problem in primary social science education is compounded by the integrated nature of the key learning area of Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE). Recent debates on teaching integrated social sciences omit discussions on the knowledge base for teaching. In this paper, a case study approach is used to investigate primary pre-service teachers’ approaches to developing a knowledge base in designing a SOSE curriculum unit. Data from five teacher-educators who taught primary SOSE curriculum …

An Ontology-Based Approach For Model Representation, Sharing And Reuse, Amit Deokar, Omar F. El-Gayar, Nazim Taskin, Ruba Aljafari

Research & Publications

Although Decision Support Systems (DSS) play a dominant role in organizing data and models, its capability in supporting decision makers in collaborating distributed environments is still limited when it comes to the selection, sharing, and re-use of models. For mathematical models to be shared and reused, mechanisms are needed for understanding, implementing, modifying, discovering, selecting, engaging, and composing models. At a fundamental level, model representation will need to extend beyond model structure to include model semantics as well. This research leverages advances in Semantic Web technologies and ontologies to enable sharing and re-using of decision models by providing enriched semantics …

Characteristics Of Male Pre-Service Elementary Education Candidates In North Dakota: An Exploratory Study, Daphne S. Ghorbani

Theses and Dissertations

In 2003 the National Education Association annual survey revealed that male teachers currently make up 35% of America's kindergarten through 12 th grade classroom teaching cadre. In grades kindergarten through sixth grade, men comprise 9% of the classroom teachers, and only 2% of classroom teachers inkindergarten through third grade are men. In 1994 Sadker and Sadker published Failing at Fairness, which examined gender biases in American kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms, including the effects of the overwhelmingly-female faculties. At the National Education Association's 2002 Representative Assembly, members adopted a measure to "identify, recognize, recruit and retain," more male teachers, …

The Ownership Of The Internet And The World Wide Web In Vermont, Ida Kubiszewski Jan 2008

The Ownership Of The Internet And The World Wide Web In Vermont, Ida Kubiszewski

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

The internet is an interesting case, since it was created entirely with taxpayer's money by DARPA, while the world wide web was created at CERN in Switzerland and placed into the public domain voluntarily in 1993. The internet and web have many features of a commons, and many people refer to the "internet commons". Kubiszewski (pronounced cube- ih-shefski) explores the intricacies of the internet and world wide web to determine if internet companies are extracting economic rent from the public and how it could be recovered. She finds that companies are making a substantial profit by utilizing a resource that …

Transitioning The Family Business, Dwight Drake Jan 2008

Transitioning The Family Business, Dwight Drake

Articles

By any measure, family-dominated businesses are the backbone of the American economy. Although a large majority of family businesses are managed by senior family members who are older than age 55 and more than 80 percent of such senior family members claim that they want the business to remain in the family, less than 30 percent of such businesses have tackled the challenge of developing a plan for transitioning the business to the next generation.

For over 90 percent of such families, this planning challenge is aggravated by the fact that they have no diversified wealth: the family’s wealth is …

Promoting Supportive Relationships In Youth Programs: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Mat D. Duerden, Ann Gillard

Faculty Publications

Although research suggests that positive contact with nonparental adults is developmentally beneficial for youth; many adolescents do not have access to such relationships. It is important that adults structure existing relationships to optimize positive youth development. Relationships with adults, who support youth’s needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence, provide youth with scaffolding as they navigate their way through adolescence. Self-Determination Theory offers a straight-forward approach to understanding the elements of contexts that best promote the development of supportive relationships. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature concerning youth-adult relationships, including their associated prevalence and developmental benefits across …

Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) are important pests of Solanaceae in many countries. Several studies have demonstrated that T. urticae is an acceptable prey to many predatory mites, although the suitability of this prey depends on the host plant. T. evansi, has been shown to be an unfavorable prey to most predatory mites that have been tested against it. The predator Phytoseiulus fragariae Denmark and Schicha (Acari: Phytoseiidae) has been found in association with the two species in Brazil. The objective of this work was to compare biological parameters of P. fragariae on T. …
