An SQL injection attacks interactive web applications that provide database services. These applications take user inputs and use them to create an SQL query at run time. In an SQL injection attack, an attacker might insert a malicious SQL query as input to perform an unauthorized database operation. Using SQL injection attacks, an attacker can retrieve or modify confidential and sensitive information from the database. It may jeopardize the confidentiality and security of Web sites which …

Design & Evaluation Of Path-Based Reputation System For Manet Routing, Ji Li Jan 2008

Design & Evaluation Of Path-Based Reputation System For Manet Routing, Ji Li

Master's Projects

Most of the existing reputation systems in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) consider only node reputations when selecting routes. Reputation and trust are therefore generally ensured within a one-hop distance when routing decisions are made, which often fail to provide the most reliable, trusted route. In this report, we first summarize the background studies on the security of MANET. Then, we propose a system that is based on path reputation, which is computed from reputation and trust values of each and every node in the route. The use of path reputation greatly enhances the reliability of resulting routes. The detailed …

Determination Of The Extravascular Burden Of Carbon Monoxide (Co) On Human Heart, Kinnera Erupaka Jan 2008

Determination Of The Extravascular Burden Of Carbon Monoxide (Co) On Human Heart, Kinnera Erupaka

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Noninvasive measurements of myocardial carboxymyoglobin levels (%MbCO) and oxygen tensions (PtO2) are difficult to obtain experimentally. We have developed a compartmental model which allows prediction of myocardial %MbCO levels and PtO2 for varied carbon monoxide (CO) exposures. The cardiac compartment in the model consists of vascular subcompartments which contain two tissue subcompartments varying in capillary density. Mass-balance equations for oxygen (O2) and CO are applied for all compartments. Myocardial oxygen consumption and blood flow are quantified from predictive formulas based on heart rate. Model predictions are validated with experimental data at normoxia, hypoxia, exercise and hyperoxia. CO exposures of varying …

Topology-Based Modeling And Analysis Of Orthogonal Cutting Process, Rajesh Kandibanda

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis presents the application of topology to machining at the micro and macro levels through an experimental study, modeling and analysis. Uncoated carbide tools of four different cutting edge radii and four different feed rates are used to perform orthogonal machining on AISI 1045 steel disks. The study analyzes the cutting forces, changing grain boundary parameters, micro-hardness, temperature and correlates them to the residual stresses that hold a key to the product life. This analysis helps to understand and evaluate the aspects of grain boundary engineering that influence the fatigue life of a component. The two components of residual …

Hdl Implementation And Analysis Of A Residual Register For A Floating-Point Arithmetic Unit, Akil Kaveti Jan 2008

Hdl Implementation And Analysis Of A Residual Register For A Floating-Point Arithmetic Unit, Akil Kaveti

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Processors used in lower-end scientific applications like graphic cards and video game consoles have IEEE single precision floating-point hardware [23]. Double precision offers higher precision at higher implementation cost and lower performance. The need for high precision computations in these applications is not enough to justify the use double precision hardware and the extra hardware complexity needed [23]. Native-pair arithmetic offers an interesting and feasible solution to this problem. This technique invented by T. J. Dekker uses single-length floating-point numbers to represent higher precision floating-point numbers [3]. Native-pair arithmetic has been proposed by Dr. William R. Dieter and Dr. Henry …

The Prosody Of Uncertainty For Spoken Dialogue Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Bevan Jones Jan 2008

The Prosody Of Uncertainty For Spoken Dialogue Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Bevan Jones

Master's Projects

The speech medium is more than an audio conveyance of word strings. It contains meta information about the content of the speech. The prosody of speech, pauses and intonation, adds an extra dimension of diagnostic information about the quality of a speaker's answers, suggesting an important avenue of research for spoken dialogue tutoring systems. Tutoring systems that are sensitive to such cues may employ different tutoring strategies based on detected student uncertainty, and they may be able to perform more precise assessment of the area of student difficulty. However, properly identifying the cues can be challenging, typically requiring thousands of …

Exact And Approximation Algorithms For Computing Reversal Distances In Genome Rearrangement, Euna Park Jan 2008

Exact And Approximation Algorithms For Computing Reversal Distances In Genome Rearrangement, Euna Park

Master's Projects

Genome rearrangement is a research area capturing wide attention in molecular biology. The reversal distance problem is one of the most widely studied models of genome rearrangements in inferring the evolutionary relationship between two genomes at chromosome level. The problem of estimating reversal distance between two genomes is modeled as sorting by reversals. While the problem of sorting signed permutations can have polynomial time solutions, the problem of sorting unsigned permutations has been proven to be NP-hard [4]. This work introduces an exact greedy algorithm for sorting by reversals focusing on unsigned permutations. An improved method of producing cycle decompositions …

Arecibo Hi Absorption Measurements Of Pulsars And The Electron Density At Intermediate Longitudes In The First Galactic Quadrant, J. M. Weisberg, S. Stanimirovic, K. Xilouris, A. Hedden,, A. De La Fuente, S. B. Anderson, F. A. Jenet

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

We have used the Arecibo telescope to measure the H i absorption spectra of eight pulsars. We show how kinematic distance measurements depend on the values of the Galactic constants R0 and 0, and we select our preferred current values from the literature. We then derive kinematic distances for the low-latitude pulsars in our sample and electron densities along their lines of sight. We combine these measurements with all others in the inner Galactic plane visible from Arecibo to study the electron density in this region.

Nonmonotonicity In The Quantum-Classical Transition: Chaos Induced By Quantum Effects, Arie Kapulkin, Arjendu K. Pattanayak Jan 2008

Nonmonotonicity In The Quantum-Classical Transition: Chaos Induced By Quantum Effects, Arie Kapulkin, Arjendu K. Pattanayak

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

The classical-quantum transition for chaotic systems is understood to be accompanied by the suppression of chaotic effects as the relative h is increased. We show evidence to the contrary in the behavior of the quantum trajectory dynamics of a dissipative quantum chaotic system, the double-well Duffing oscillator. The classical limit in the case considered has regular behavior, but as the effective h is increased we see chaotic behavior. This chaos then disappears deeper into the quantum regime, which means that the quantum-classical transition in this case is nonmonotonic in h.

Controlling The Ratchet Effect For Cold Atoms, Anatole Kenfack, Jiangbin Gong, Arjendu K. Pattanayak Jan 2008

Controlling The Ratchet Effect For Cold Atoms, Anatole Kenfack, Jiangbin Gong, Arjendu K. Pattanayak

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

Low-order quantum resonances manifested by directed currents have been realized with cold atoms. Here we show that by increasing the strength of an experimentally achievable delta-kicking ratchet potential, quantum resonances of a very high order may naturally emerge and can induce larger ratchet currents than low-order resonances, with the underlying classical limit being fully chaotic. The results offer a means of controlling quantum transport of cold atoms.

The comparison between the two schools used communication arts and science data from 2002-2006 Missouri Assessment Program (MAP). It also examined the effects of variables such as summer breaks, socioeconomic status, and student attendance that affect student achievement beyond adding more instructional time. Examination of research related to …

Just Add Water: Reclamation Projects And Development Fantasies In The Upper Basin Of The Colorado River, Stephen C. Strugeon Jan 2008

Just Add Water: Reclamation Projects And Development Fantasies In The Upper Basin Of The Colorado River, Stephen C. Strugeon

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

The history of the development of the American West is full of countless examples of promoters seeking to encourage outside investors to buy land, invest in mines, and build railroads. The history of water projects in the region is no different. Residents of communities such as Grand Junction, Colorado, recognized early on the two-fold dilemma that they faced: irrigation and reclamation projects would be critical to the economic growth of the area, and the funding for these projects would have to be obtained from sources outside the region. The promoters of such projects relied upon booster literature in order to …

Matrix Model Superpotentials And Ade Singularities, Carina Curto Jan 2008

Matrix Model Superpotentials And Ade Singularities, Carina Curto

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We use F. Ferrari’s methods relating matrix models to Calabi–Yau spaces in order to explain much of Intriligator and Wecht’s ADE classification of N = 1 superconformal theories which arise as RG fixed points of N = 1 SQCD theories with adjoints. We find that ADE superpotentials in the Intriligator–Wecht classification exactly match matrix model superpotentials obtained from Calabi–Yau with corresponding ADE singularities. Moreover, in the additional Ô, Â, Dˆ and Ê cases we find new singular geometries. These “hat” geometries are closely related to their ADE counterparts, but feature non-isolated singularities. As a byproduct, we give simple descriptions for …

Valuations For Spike Train Prediction, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Kenneth D. Harris Jan 2008

Valuations For Spike Train Prediction, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Kenneth D. Harris

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The ultimate product of an electrophysiology experiment is often a decision on which biological hypothesis or model best explains the observed data. We outline a paradigm designed for comparison of different models, which we refer to as spike train prediction. A key ingredient of this paradigm is a prediction quality valuation that estimates how close a predicted conditional intensity function is to an actual observed spike train. Although a valuation based on log likelihood (L) is most natural, it has various complications in this context. We propose that a quadratic valuation (Q) can be used as an alternative to L. …

An Automatic Bridge Detection Technique For Multispectral Images, D. Chaudhuri, Ashok Samal Jan 2008

An Automatic Bridge Detection Technique For Multispectral Images, D. Chaudhuri, Ashok Samal

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Extraction of features from images has been a goal of researchers since the early days of remote sensing. While significant progress has been made in several applications, much remains to be done in the area of accurate identification of high-level features such as buildings and roads. This paper presents an approach for detecting bridges over water bodies from multispectral imagery. The multispectral image is first classified into eight land-cover types using a majority-must-be-granted logic based on the multiseed supervised classification technique. The classified image is then categorized into a trilevel image: water, concrete, and background. Bridges are then recognized in …
