Development And Evaluation Of Passive Sampling And Lc-Ms Based Techniques For The Detection And Monitoring Of Lipophilic Marine Toxins In Mesocosm And Field Studies, Elie Fux

Doctoral

The consumption of shellfish that accumulate marine biotoxins produced by harmful Algae can result in severe gastrointestinal or neurotoxic illnesses depending on the nature of the toxin. Therefore, it is essential that suitable monitoring programs are implemented in order to protect public health. This PhD study focused on aspects of the characteristics and monitoring of azaspiracids and toxins from Dinophysis spp. Passive samplers were used in this study in parallel with both indigenous and transplanted mussels that did not contain toxins to investigate the accumulation of toxins on the West coast of Ireland during 2005. This approach allowed for a …

Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright Jan 2008

Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright

Doctoral

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions have widely been used as photocatalysts, either alone or in a doped form to degrade organic compounds and kill bacteria. Because of its relatively large band gap, UV light has been the most efficient radiation used to allow this catalysis to occur. TiO2 has also been immobilised on electrodes in order to separate the ‘reduction’ and ‘oxidation’ reactions. Typical systems involve the oxidation of a ‘fuel’ at a TiO2 coated anode and the reduction of oxygen at a separate cathode, where the passage of current can be monitored, and this work utilises such a system. In …

Digital Close Range Photogrammetry In Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction, Fiona Coyle Jan 2008

Digital Close Range Photogrammetry In Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction, Fiona Coyle

Doctoral

Road traffic accidents are consistently in the top ten causes of death world-wide. In order to reduce the number of fatalities caused by traffic collision, better knowledge and understanding of the sequence of events prior to and during a traffic accident, i.e. Accident Reconstruction, is required, so it is important to obtain detailed quantitative information about the damage sustained by the crashed vehicle(s). The research reported here was aimed at developing a fast and accurate method of measuring the damage. Digital Close Range Photogrammetry is the technique chosen for obtaining vehicle profiles from which accurate measurements of crust damage could …

Staying Within The Margins: The Educational Stories Of First-Generation, Low-Income College Students, Diane Lyn Cole Jan 2008

Staying Within The Margins: The Educational Stories Of First-Generation, Low-Income College Students, Diane Lyn Cole

Dissertations and Theses

his research addressed educational persistence among first-generation, low-income college students. The educational paths of 22 first-generation, low-income undergraduate students attending a large, urban university in the Northwest region of the United States were examined through a narrative framework. Half of the participants had persisted from year one to year two, and the other half left the university after their first year. Analytic procedures consisted of thematic qualitative coding, an analysis of student trajectories over educational histories, and the reconstruction of narrative stories. Data were used to examine: (1) How first-generation, low-income students understood and described their journey through their first …

No Child Left Behind Act, Race, And Parents Involved, Joseph O. Oluwole, Preston C. Green Iii Jan 2008

No Child Left Behind Act, Race, And Parents Involved, Joseph O. Oluwole, Preston C. Green Iii

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Professors Oluwole and Green consider how raceconscious implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act could affect the racial achievement gap in the United States. Their article addresses challenges states and school districts are confronted with in attempting to overcome racial achievement gaps while facing decreasing budgets and mandatory procedures. They evaluate the feasibility of race-conscious school funding in the context of the Act's purposes and past challenges to school financing schemes. Professors Oluwole and Green emphasize the necessity of raceconscious school funding, both as a social justice matter and a practical matter for the future of American education.

Development Of A Direct Evaporation Bismuth Hall Thruster, Dean Richard Massey Jan 2008

Development Of A Direct Evaporation Bismuth Hall Thruster, Dean Richard Massey

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Hall thrusters have been under active development around the world since the 1960’s. Thrusters using traditional propellants such as xenon have been flown on a variety of satellite orbit raising and maintenance missions with an excellent record. To expand the mission envelope, it is necessary to lower the specific impulse of the thrusters but xenon and krypton are poor performers at specific impulses below 1,200 seconds.

To enhance low specific impulse performance, this dissertation examines the development of a Hall-effect thruster which uses bismuth as a propellant. Bismuth, the heaviest non-radioactive element, holds many advantages over noble gas propellants from …

Multiscale Constitutive Modeling Of Polymer Materials, Pavan Kumar Valavala Jan 2008

Multiscale Constitutive Modeling Of Polymer Materials, Pavan Kumar Valavala

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Materials are inherently multi-scale in nature consisting of distinct characteristics at various length scales from atoms to bulk material. There are no widely accepted predictive multi-scale modeling techniques that span from atomic level to bulk relating the effects of the structure at the nanometer (10-9 meter) on macro-scale properties. Traditional engineering deals with treating matter as continuous with no internal structure. In contrast to engineers, physicists have dealt with matter in its discrete structure at small length scales to understand fundamental behavior of materials. Multiscale modeling is of great scientific and technical importance as it can aid in designing …

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

We focus on two major problems in the study of paleokarst of the Biscayne aquifer in southeastem Florida: ( 1 ), current conceptual models of karst aquifers do not adequately characterize much of the eogenetic rnacropore system within the carbonate rocks of the Biscayne aquifer, and (2) standard laboratory core-analysis rnethods cannol be used lo accurately measure the permeability of highly macroporous carbonate core samples.

Darwin's Bee-Trap: The Kinetics Of Catasetum, A New World Orchid, Charles C. Nicholson, James W. Bales, Joyce E. Palmer-Fortune, Robert G. Nicholson

Physics: Faculty Publications

The orchid genera Catasetum employs a hair-trigger activated, pollen release mechanism, which forcibly attaches pollen sacs onto foraging insects in the New World tropics. This remarkable adaptation was studied extensively by Charles Darwin and he termed this rapid response "sensitiveness." Using high speed video cameras with a frame speed of 1000 fps, this rapid release was filmed and from the subsequent footage, velocity, speed, acceleration, force and kinetic energy were computed.

Clustereasy: A Program For Simulating Scalar Field Evolution On Parallel Computers, Gary Felder Jan 2008

Clustereasy: A Program For Simulating Scalar Field Evolution On Parallel Computers, Gary Felder

Physics: Faculty Publications

We describe a new, parallel programming version of the scalar field simulation program LATTICEEASY. The new C++ program, CLUSTEREASY, can simulate arbitrary scalar field models on distributed-memory clusters. The speed and memory requirements scale well with the number of processors. As with the serial version of LATTICEEASY, CLUSTEREASY can run simulations in one, two, or three dimensions, with or without expansion of the universe, with customizable parameters and output. The program and its full documentation are available on the LATTICEEASY website at http://www.science.smith.edu/departments/Physics/fstaff/gfelder/latticeeasy/. In this paper we provide a brief overview of what CLUSTEREASY does and the ways in which …

Early Childhood Classroom Quality And Preschool Learning Behaviors, Steven Placid Kachmar Jan 2008

Early Childhood Classroom Quality And Preschool Learning Behaviors, Steven Placid Kachmar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intelligence quotient (IQ) continues to dominate educational decision-making although it lacks descriptive quality indicative of how children learn best and precisely what contributes to learning differences among children. Researchers have advocated for the use of alternative assessment methods to describe differences in children's learning. Limited research has been conducted in this area yet is supportive of learning behavior as an influential factor associated with scholastic achievement. Unfortunately, little research has been conducted on preschool learning behaviors, despite their link to positive child outcomes. Early childhood environments have similarly been linked to children's scholastic success and positive outcomes.

Super Fuzzy Matrices And Super Fuzzy Models For Social Scientists, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Amal

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The concept of supermatrix for social scientists was first introduced by Paul Horst. The main purpose of his book was to introduce this concept to social scientists, students, teachers and research workers who lacked mathematical training. He wanted them to be equipped in a branch of mathematics that was increasingly valuable for the analysis of scientific data. This book introduces the concept of fuzzy super matrices and operations on them. The author has provided only those operations on fuzzy supermatrices that are essential for developing super fuzzy multi expert models. We do not indulge in labourious use of suffixes or …
