Origin Of Conductive Surface Layer In Annealed Zno, David C. Look, B. Claflin, Helen Smith Jan 2008

Origin Of Conductive Surface Layer In Annealed Zno, David C. Look, B. Claflin, Helen Smith

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The highly conductive surface layers found in nearly all as-grown or annealed bulk ZnO wafers are studied by temperature-dependent Hall-effect and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements. In this work, we have used annealing in N2 at 900 degrees C, and forming gas (5% H2 in N2) at 600 degrees C, to cause a large enough surface conduction that SIMS measurements can be reliably employed. The increased near-surface donor density, as determined from two-layer Hall-effect modeling, is consistent with an increased near-surface concentration of Al, Ga, and In atoms, resulting from diffusion. There is no evidence for …

Transport Of Blue Crab Larvae In The Middle Atlantic Bight: A Wet And Windy Journey, Charles E. Epifanio, Charles E. Tilburg Jan 2008

Transport Of Blue Crab Larvae In The Middle Atlantic Bight: A Wet And Windy Journey, Charles E. Epifanio, Charles E. Tilburg

Journal of Marine Research

This paper describes the 25-year evolution of a program of research into the larval ecology of the Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) near the mouth of Delaware Bay on the east coast of the USA (38.5N, 75.1W). The investigation began as a biological study; eventually incorporated a physical component; and finally added a mathematical modeling aspect. Early work was strictly biological and demonstrated that C. sapidus larvae are exported from the estuary to the adjacent coastal ocean where larval development occurs. Once this fact was established, it was clear that further progress demanded an understanding of shelf circulation. …

G-Perfect Nonlinear Functions, James A. Davis, Laurent Poinsot Jan 2008

G-Perfect Nonlinear Functions, James A. Davis, Laurent Poinsot

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Perfect nonlinear functions are used to construct DES-like cryptosystems that are resistant to differential attacks. We present generalized DES-like cryptosystems where the XOR operation is replaced by a general group action. The new cryptosystems, when combined with G-perfect nonlinear functions (similar to classical perfect nonlinear functions with one XOR replaced by a general group action), allow us to construct systems resistant to modified differential attacks. The more general setting enables robust cryptosystems with parameters that would not be possible in the classical setting. We construct several examples of G-perfect nonlinear functions, both Z2 -valued and Za …

Shattering And Moving Beyond The Gutenberg Paradigm: The Dawn Of The Electronic Will, Joseph Karl Grant Jan 2008

Shattering And Moving Beyond The Gutenberg Paradigm: The Dawn Of The Electronic Will, Joseph Karl Grant

Journal Publications

Legislators in Nevada have already acted to modernize the law of wills. This Article advocates that other states follow their lead and depart from what is described as the "Gutenberg Paradigm" by adopting similar legislation and embracing electronic technology. Part One of this Article explores the history of print and the emergence of the "Gutenberg Paradigm." Part Two examines the history and policy underpinnings of will execution formalities, and the role of the "writing" requirement. Part Three explores the use of electronic wills as conforming and nonconforming testamentary instruments. Part Three, also, highlights some of the pitfalls and shortcomings of …

Spin Dynamics In Single-Molecule Magnets Combining Surface Acoustic Waves And High-Frequency Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, F Macià, J Lawrence, S Hill, J M. Hernandez, J Tejada, P V. Santos, Christos Lampropoulos, G Christou Jan 2008

Spin Dynamics In Single-Molecule Magnets Combining Surface Acoustic Waves And High-Frequency Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, F Macià, J Lawrence, S Hill, J M. Hernandez, J Tejada, P V. Santos, Christos Lampropoulos, G Christou

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

We report an experimental technique that integrates high-frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectroscopy in order to measure spin dynamics on fast time scales in single-molecule magnets. After the system is driven out of equilibrium by triggering magnetic avalanches, or simply by heating with short SAW pulses, the evolution of the spin populations within fixed energy levels is measured using HFEPR spectroscopy.

The Silent Crisis: Redefining Theoretical Approaches In Early Childhood Intervention Research With American Indians, Michael D. Niles, Lisa Byers, Elizabeth Krueger

Essays in Education

This article discusses the theoretical context of the education of American Indian children. The unique needs of American Indian children and the lack of ECI provided, as well as the major theoretical approaches used by the dominant society in ECI program development are discussed. The linear model of time and human development – the view that the dominant society traditionally holds; and the nonlinear perspective of most American Indian communities is presented.

The Evolving Regulation Of The Legal Profession: The Costs Of Indeterminacy And Certainty, Irma S. Russell Jan 2008

The Evolving Regulation Of The Legal Profession: The Costs Of Indeterminacy And Certainty, Irma S. Russell

Faculty Works

This Article examines the incentive systems of the common law and modern rules of lawyer discipline, which combine to form a dual system of lawyer regulation in this country. The Article considers discontinuities between this dual system of regulation created by the common law, which influenced the 1908 Canons of Professional Ethics, and the current disciplinary rules, presented by the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. While the Model Rules form the basis of lawyer discipline in most states, the approach presented in the Canons continues to have force because the common law applies to lawyers through contract and tort law. …

Does Looping Enhance Student Achievement?, Robyn G. Meeks

The Corinthian

The purpose of this study is to investigate the pros and cons of looping, while discovering its social and academic effects on student achievement. This was done by analyzing the standardized test scores in reading, language arts and math of a control group that did not loop and an experimental group that looped for one year. Results showed there was no significant difference in academic achievement between the group of students that looped and the students that did not loop in grades 4-5. There was statistical significance in the improvement of reading test scores from the students that looped. Although …

Palaeoecology Of Coal-Bearing Eocene Sediments In Central Anatolia (Turkey) Based On Quantitative Palynological Data, M. Serkan Akki̇raz, Mi̇ne Sezgül Kayseri̇, Funda Akgün

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this study, the lignite-bearing Yoncalı formation between Yozgat and Sorgun, in central Anatolia has been palynologically examined. Based on 37 outcrop samples, quantitative palynological studies recognized 64 genera and 136 palynoflora species in the palynological assemblage, which indicated a Middle-?Late Eocene age. This paper also presents a quantitative palaeovegetation and palaeoclimate reconstruction for the Middle-?Upper Eocene coal occurrences of Central Anatolia on the basis of palynomorph assemblages. The diversified floral and ecological characteristics of the pollen taxa indicates that the Middle-?Upper Eocene formations in central Anatolia were characterized by the presence of a complex mangrove swamp with contributions by …
