Characterization And Optimization Of Detector Components And Measurement Procedures For The Near Detector Of The T2k Neutrino Long Baseline Experiment, Kevin Mcbryde Jan 2008

Characterization And Optimization Of Detector Components And Measurement Procedures For The Near Detector Of The T2k Neutrino Long Baseline Experiment, Kevin Mcbryde

LSU Master's Theses

T2K (Tokai to Kamioka) is the first off-axis long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, and its primary goal is to measure the neutrino mixing parameter θ13. A beam of muon type neutrinos with mean energy 600 MeV will be directed from the proton synchrotron at JPARC toward the Super-Kamiokande detector 295 km away. A near detector will be located 280 m from the proton beam target and instrumented with sub-detectors for measuring neutrino interactions prior to oscillation. One of these sub-detectors, the side muon range detector (SMRD), will help in measuring the neutrino energy spectrum and identifying backgrounds and …

Strategic Analysis Of Ghana's Wood Export Sector, Odoom Domson Jan 2008

Strategic Analysis Of Ghana's Wood Export Sector, Odoom Domson

LSU Master's Theses

Export-led strategies are very crucial to achieving growth and goals of developing and transition economies such as Ghana. As a result, export strategies are being adopted in many developing countries. Although such export strategies might be in place, the deployment of resources and tax payers’ money involved often calls for the investigation of programs and initiatives that exist and perceptions by industry if they are working. Furthermore, Ghana wood exports to the US, a historically major market, have been declining over the past six years. Therefore, there is the need to determine if export constraints to the US market exist. …

Deciphering Controls On Polyphase Intraplate Deformation In The Ertomiao Region, Lang Shan, North-Central China, Michael Blevins Jan 2008

Deciphering Controls On Polyphase Intraplate Deformation In The Ertomiao Region, Lang Shan, North-Central China, Michael Blevins

LSU Master's Theses

The Ertomiao region of the Lang Shan, China, is located approximately 700 km west of Beijing, in the north-central portion of the North China block. This area is characterized by multiple periods of deformation, including periods of extension and contraction, spanning from Permian through Cenozoic time. This setting provides the structural relationships necessary to decipher the controls of polyphase crustal deformation. During fieldwork key structural observations and crosscutting relationships were established. Beginning with a period of contraction, northeast striking post Jurassic, pre Early Cretaceous (123 ma) thrust faults place Precambrian gneiss (unit PCB) onto Jurassic/Cretaceous sandstone and conglomerate (unit Jr/K). …

Modeling And Synergy Testing Of Drug Combination Data: A Pharmacokinetic Analysis, Jacy Rebecca Crosby Jan 2008

Modeling And Synergy Testing Of Drug Combination Data: A Pharmacokinetic Analysis, Jacy Rebecca Crosby

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, we present and implement a method to assess the mathematical synergy of two-drug combinations based on a stochastic model. The drugs in question are two isomers that are applied to the human eye via a liquid eye drop. Techniques applied to the data in this paper can be applied to other two-drug combination studies.

We derive the mean and the variance terms of the drug combination "effects" in closed form using Ito's method of stochastic differential equations. The model fit of the data to the individual subject is examined by both statistical and graphical methods. Two estimation …

Reproducible Increased Mg Incorporation And Large Hole Concentration In Gan Using Metal Modulated Epitaxy, Shawn D. Burnham, Gon Namkoong, David C. Look, Bruce Clafin, W. Alan Doolittle

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The metal modulated epitaxy (MME) growth technique is reported as a reliable approach to obtain reproducible large hole concentrations in Mg-doped GaN grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy on c-plane sapphire substrates. An extremely Ga-rich flux was used, and modulated with the Mg source according to the MME growth technique. The shutter modulation approach of the MME technique allows optimal Mg surface coverage to build between MME cycles and Mg to incorporate at efficient levels in GaN films. The maximum sustained concentration of Mg obtained in GaN films using the MME technique was above 7 × 1020 cm-3 …

Nonthermal Laser-Induced Formation Of Crystalline Ge Quantum Dots On Si(100), M. S. Hegazy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 2008

Nonthermal Laser-Induced Formation Of Crystalline Ge Quantum Dots On Si(100), M. S. Hegazy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The effects of laser-induced electronic excitations on the self-assembly of Ge quantum dots on Si (100) - (2×1) grown by pulsed laser deposition are studied. Electronic excitations due to laser irradiation of the Si substrate and the Ge film during growth are shown to decrease the roughness of films grown at a substrate temperature of ∼120 °C. At this temperature, the grown films are nonepitaxial. Electronic excitation results in the formation of an epitaxial wetting layer and crystalline Ge quantum dots at ∼260 °C, a temperature at which no crystalline quantum dots form without excitation under the same deposition conditions. …

Law Students Who Learn Differently: A Narrative Case Study Of Three Law Students With Attention Deficit Disorder (Add) , Leah M. Christensen

Journal of Law and Health

More law students than ever before begin law school having been diagnosed with a learning disability. As legal educators, do we have an obligation to expand our teaching methodologies beyond the typical law student? What teaching methodologies work most effectively for law students with learning disabilities? The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of law students with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) about their law school experience. The case study yielded four themes relating to the social, learning and achievement domains of the students.First, law students with ADD experienced feelings of isolation in law school; second, the more …

An Infinity Of Questions: Dramatizing Science On Stage, Emily Miranker Jan 2008

An Infinity Of Questions: Dramatizing Science On Stage, Emily Miranker

Honors Papers

My Honors thesis, An Infinity of Questions, explores the performance of science on stage using two plays: The Life of Galileo, challenging the status quo, by Bertolt Brecht and Copenhagen, examining the origins of intention, by Michael Frayn. I focus on these two plays because not only because they impress me personally, but both spring from historical events and are thematically concerned with physics and the atomic bomb. They also make an interesting juxtaposition since Galileo has a decidedly political agenda, while Copenhagen is a philosophic inquiry. I argue that these dramas are exceptional science plays because of how they …

Learning To Eat Appreciatively And Thoughtfully (Eat): Connecting With Food Through School Gardens, Lina A. Yamashita Jan 2008

Learning To Eat Appreciatively And Thoughtfully (Eat): Connecting With Food Through School Gardens, Lina A. Yamashita

Honors Papers

Many young people today do not learn to cook, or eat nutritious, regular meals together with their families, or go shopping for produce. Because of this, they do not have the opportunity to develop any real appreciation for food. To make matters worse, many public schools fail to teach students anything at all about the complex environmental and cultural history of food – how it is produced, preserved, prepared, and distributed. At the same time, schools serve lunches that often lack nutritional value. In this thesis, I argue the importance of giving students the opportunity to connect to food through …

Decomposition Heuristic With Partial Assignment Approach For Mlclsp-M Problem, Supakanya Chinprateep, Rein Boondiskulchok Jan 2008

Decomposition Heuristic With Partial Assignment Approach For Mlclsp-M Problem, Supakanya Chinprateep, Rein Boondiskulchok

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This research proposes a heuristic method, which decomposes the Multi-level Multi-item Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem with Multi-workstation (MLCLSP-M) into two phases which are an assignment with given lot size and a partial lot size with given assignment. Each iteration, the sub problem mathematical models are solved with AMPL/CPLEX 8.0.0 solver. An example is present for demonstration of the heuristic. The result indicate that the proposed heuristic (Partial Assignment – Lot size: PA-LS) give a satisfactory solution within faster solving time on comparison with the original mathematical model solving.

The Adaptive Cross Approximation Algorithm Applied To Electromagnetic Scattering By Bodies Of Revolution, Brent D. Rogus Jan 2008

The Adaptive Cross Approximation Algorithm Applied To Electromagnetic Scattering By Bodies Of Revolution, Brent D. Rogus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Finding solutions to Maxwell's Equations is the key to modeling all electromagnetic phenomenon. One approach to solving Maxwell's Equations is to use an integral equation approach. The integral equations can then be solved numerically by approaches like the method of moments or the Nystrom method. These approaches yield a dense system of linear equations. The coefficient matrix must be computed and stored, which requires a great deal of computational resources. The adaptive cross approximation (ACA) algorithm is a method which can be used to efficiently compute and store these matricies. This thesis will apply the ACA to a special class …

Beyond Gender: Taking A Multi-Status Approach To Understanding Students' Positioning In Stem, Ashima Singh Jan 2008

Beyond Gender: Taking A Multi-Status Approach To Understanding Students' Positioning In Stem, Ashima Singh

Open Access Dissertations

Although data indicate that White women and persons of color are both vulnerable to selective attrition in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) pipeline, gender has been the primary focus of most research in that area. This implies that: (1) intersections of multiple marginalization (e.g. women of color) within STEM is understudied, and (2) there is a need for a multifaceted understanding (encompassing perceptual, experiential, motivational and social characteristics) of students' perceptions of, and participation in, the STEM disciplines. In this research project, a multi-status, cross-disciplinary survey methodology was used to identify the ways in which undergraduate students perceived, …

Understanding Behavioral Sources Of Process Variation Following Enterprise System Deployment, Elliot Bendoly, Mark Cotteleer Jan 2008

Understanding Behavioral Sources Of Process Variation Following Enterprise System Deployment, Elliot Bendoly, Mark Cotteleer

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This paper extends the current understanding of the time-sensitivity of intent and usage following large-scale IT implementation. Our study focuses on perceived system misfit with organizational processes in tandem with the availability of system circumvention opportunities. Case study comparisons and controlled experiments are used to support the theoretical unpacking of organizational and technical contingencies and their relationship to shifts in user intentions and variation in work-processing tactics over time. Findings suggest that managers and users may retain strong intentions to circumvent systems in the presence of perceived task-technology misfit. The perceived ease with which this circumvention is attainable factors significantly …

Sales Gone Wild: Will The Ftc's Business Opportunity Rule Put An End To Pyramid Marketing Schemes?, Sergio Pareja

Faculty Scholarship

This article analyzes the anticipated effect of the FTC's Business Opportunity Rule on pyramid marketing schemes. Pyramid marketing schemes consistently rank in the top ten lists of consumer complaints received by the FTC and state consumer protection divisions, victimizing 1.5 million Americans a year. One recent class action settlement demonstrated that the victims, who are often relatively poor and uneducated, had an average loss of approximately $8,000 each. The FTC has promulgated a new Business Opportunity Rule in an effort to end these abuses. Promotors of business opportunities will be required to comply with the new rule beginning on July …

Gifford Pinchot's Photographic Aesthetic, Carlie Shaw Magill Jan 2008

Gifford Pinchot's Photographic Aesthetic, Carlie Shaw Magill

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Gifford Pinchot’s aesthetic developed in childhood and combined the pictorial considerations of the Hudson River School with the use philosophy of early landscape architecture and the format of early western survey photographers. Pinchot and photography came of age during the American industrial revolution; at a time when medium and man seemed to encompass both art and science. Gifford Pinchot used photography to ask the questions what is the proper course? what is the appropriate plan of use?
