Determination Of Photochemically Produced Carbon Dioxide In Seawater, Emily M. White, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper Jan 2008

Determination Of Photochemically Produced Carbon Dioxide In Seawater, Emily M. White, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

An analytical system was developed to determine photochemically produced carbon dioxide in marine waters. Our system was designed to measure low levels of carbon dioxide by maintaining a closed system to prevent atmospheric contamination during sample preparation, irradiation, and analysis. To detect low levels of photoproduced carbon dioxide in seawater, background dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was removed before irradiation. To strip out DIC, samples were acidified to pH 3.0 (converting DIC to carbon dioxide) and bubbled with low carbon dioxide air. The pH was then readjusted back to the original value, and the resulting low-DIC seawater samples were transferred pneumatically …

Assessment Of Synaptic Function During Short-Term Facilitation In Motor Nerve Terminals In The Crayfish, Mohati Desai-Shah, Kert Viele, G. Sparks, J. Nadolski, B. Hayden, V. K. Srinivasan, Robin L. Cooper Jan 2008

Assessment Of Synaptic Function During Short-Term Facilitation In Motor Nerve Terminals In The Crayfish, Mohati Desai-Shah, Kert Viele, G. Sparks, J. Nadolski, B. Hayden, V. K. Srinivasan, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

An enhanced buildup of [Ca2+]i occurs during short-term facilitation (STF) at the crayfish neuromuscular junction (NMJ). As a model system, this NMJ allows discrete postsynaptic quantal events to be counted and characterized in relation to STF. Providing 10 pulses, at 20 and 40Hz, we monitored postsynaptic quantal events over a discrete region of a nerve terminal with a focal macropatch electrode. Characteristics of quantal events were clustered into groups by peak amplitude and time to the peak amplitude. Since the synapses at this NMJ have varied spacing of active zones, number of active zones and synaptic size, the …

Metagenomic Analysis Of Lysogeny In Tampa Bay: Implications For Prophage Gene Expression, Lauren D. Mcdaniel, Mya Breitbart, Jennifer M. Mobberley, Amy Long, Matthew Haynes, Forest Rohwer, John Paul

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Phage integrase genes often play a role in the establishment of lysogeny in temperate phage by catalyzing the integration of the phage into one of the host's replicons. To investigate temperate phage gene expression, an induced viral metagenome from Tampa Bay was sequenced by 454/Pyrosequencing. The sequencing yielded 294,068 reads with 6.6% identifiable. One hundred-three sequences had significant similarity to integrases by BLASTX analysis (e≤0.001). Four sequences with strongest amino-acid level similarity to integrases were selected and real-time PCR primers and probes were designed. Initial testing with microbial fraction DNA from Tampa Bay revealed 1.9×107, and 1300 gene …

Why Pay For What's Free?: Minimizing The Patent Threat To Free And Open Source Software, 7 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 595 (2008), Kirk D. Rowe Jan 2008

Why Pay For What's Free?: Minimizing The Patent Threat To Free And Open Source Software, 7 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 595 (2008), Kirk D. Rowe

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The growing popularity of free and open source software as a viable alternative to proprietary software has made it an unwitting participant in an inevitable intellectual property law confrontation that will pit patent against copyright. Where proprietary software is primarily protected by patents, which seek to exclude others from the use of specific ideas, open source software utilizes a variation of copyright protection, which seeks to force the inclusion rather than the exclusion of third parties’ access to expression. Because these methods of protection are as different as the software models themselves, it is difficult to predict the outcome of …

Copyright Misuses, Fair Use, And Abuse: How Sports And Media Companies Are Overreaching Their Copyright Protections, 7 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 621 (2008), Cory Tadlock Jan 2008

Copyright Misuses, Fair Use, And Abuse: How Sports And Media Companies Are Overreaching Their Copyright Protections, 7 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 621 (2008), Cory Tadlock

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

A recent FTC complaint has generated questions about the legality and effects of blanket copyright warnings issued by large sports and media companies. Copyright warnings from the NFL, MLB, and major motion picture studios often assert that no use whatsoever of their materials can be made without express permission, contrary to several provisions of U.S. copyright law. This comment proposes limiting the content and language of such warnings so consumers have a clearer view of what copyright law allows, and are not intimidated into foregoing their rights to use protected works. Exceptions like fair use and the idea-expression dichotomy prevent …

Throwing Judge Bryson's Curveball: A Pro Patent View Of Process Claims As Patent-Eligible Subject Matter, 7 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 701 (2008), Christopher A. Harkins Jan 2008

Throwing Judge Bryson's Curveball: A Pro Patent View Of Process Claims As Patent-Eligible Subject Matter, 7 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 701 (2008), Christopher A. Harkins

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Can a baseball pitcher patent a method of throwing a curveball? On May 8, 2008, Judge Bryson posed that hypothetical as a way of stressing a point during the oral argument of In re Bilski, one of the most highly-attended hearings in the twenty-five year history of the Federal Circuit. In the Bilski case, the Federal Circuit will decide whether to embrace a new patentability test that redefines what is patent-eligible subject matter in the United States, or to create a fourth no-no to patent eligibility. At stake are many computer software patents and business method patents that form the …

Floodplains: Balancing Nature And Human Needs, Vivek Shandas, Meg Merrick Jan 2008

Floodplains: Balancing Nature And Human Needs, Vivek Shandas, Meg Merrick

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

For countless years, the interaction between climatic conditions and water flow has forged the rolling hills and rivers in the metroscape. The floods that forced a deluge of water down the Columbia River between 13 and 17 thousand years ago established the fertile and absorptive landscape of the Willamette Valley. The lush vegetation controlled the regional climate and stabilized the soils, while the thirsty wetlands reduced flood potential, provided habitat, and purified the water. Over geological time, these natural processes have created ideal conditions for humans. The Pacific Northwest was home to some of the most densely populated communities of …

D&O Insurance: The Tension Between Cooperating With The Insurance Company And Protecting Privileged Information From Third Party Plaintiffs, Lindsay Fisher Jan 2008

D&O Insurance: The Tension Between Cooperating With The Insurance Company And Protecting Privileged Information From Third Party Plaintiffs, Lindsay Fisher

Seattle University Law Review

This comment argues that states should challenge the Real ID under the federalism principles enshrined in the Tenth Amendment, although the Act's driver licensing provisions infringe on both individual and state constitutional rights. A state challenge under the Tenth Amendment is more likely than modern individual rights jurisprudence to succeed in striking down Real ID. Arguing that the federal government impermissibly coerces state action under the Act will better protect both states and individual rights and succeed in having the Act overturned. Part II of this Comment provides a historical context for the enactment of Real ID and describes its …

Characterization And Analysis Of Hailstorms In The Northern Great Plains, Thomas Sando Jan 2008

Characterization And Analysis Of Hailstorms In The Northern Great Plains, Thomas Sando

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Hail is a meteorological occurrence that appears frequently during spring and summer across the Northern Great Plains. This paper first characterizes patterns associated with reported hail events occurring within a five-state region (North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska) from 2000-2006 using records taken from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) Severe Storms database. Patterns of interest include the seasonality of hail activity for each state and across the region, observational bias in the reporting of hailstone size, and temporal trends in the number of hail reports across the region and in each state. This paper then explores a …

Color Multiplexed Single Pattern Sli, Neelima Mandava Jan 2008

Color Multiplexed Single Pattern Sli, Neelima Mandava

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Structured light pattern projection techniques are well known methods of accurately capturing 3-Dimensional information of the target surface. Traditional structured light methods require several different patterns to recover the depth, without ambiguity or albedo sensitivity, and are corrupted by object movement during the projection/capture process. This thesis work presents and discusses a color multiplexed structured light technique for recovering object shape from a single image thus being insensitive to object motion.

This method uses single pattern whose RGB channels are each encoded with a unique subpattern. The pattern is projected on to the target and the reflected image is captured …

Application Of Artificial Neural Network Techniques For Design Of Modular Minicell Configurations, Arvind Goyal Jan 2008

Application Of Artificial Neural Network Techniques For Design Of Modular Minicell Configurations, Arvind Goyal

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Artificial neural networks, so far, have not been used for designing modular cells. Therefore, Self-organizing neural network (SONN) is used in the present research to design minicell-based manufacturing system. Two previously developed methods were studied and implemented using SONN model. Results obtained are compared with previous results to analyze the effectiveness of SONN in designing minicells. A new method is then developed with the objective to design minicells more effectively and efficiently. Results of all three methods are compared using machine-count and materialhandling as performance measuring criteria to find out the best method

Motion Correction Structured Light Using Pattern Interleaving Technique, Raja Kalyan Ram Cavaturu Jan 2008

Motion Correction Structured Light Using Pattern Interleaving Technique, Raja Kalyan Ram Cavaturu

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Phase Measuring Profilometry (PMP) is the most robust scanning technique for static 3D data acquisition. To make this technique robust to the target objects which are in motion during the scan interval a novel algorithm called ‘Pattern Interleaving’ is used to get a high density single scan image and making Phase Measuring Profilometry insensitive to ‘z’ motion and prevent motion banding which is predominant in 3D reconstruction when the object is in motion during the scan time

Dependable And Certifiable Real-World Systems – Issue Of Software Engineering Education, Andrew J. Kornecki

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Daytona Beach

Embedded software and dedicated hardware are vital elements of the modern world, from personal electronics to transportation, from communication to aerospace, from military to gaming, from medical systems to banking. Combinations of even minor hardware or software defects in a complex system may lead to violation of safety with or even without evident system failure, a major problem that the computing profession faces is the lack of a universal approach to unite the dissimilar viewpoints presented by computer science, with its discrete and mathematical underpinnings, and by computer engineering, which focuses on building real systems and considering spatial and material …
