Use Of Artificial Burrows By Western Burrowing Owls And Other Vertebrates During Winter In Southern Texas, Jennifer L. Keppers, Mary Kay Skoruppa, Marc C. Woodin, Graham C. Hickman
Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society
Burrows are an integral part of the natural history of the Western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea), however, mammal burrows are uncommon in southern Texas where the Burrowing Owl overwinters. Seventy-two artificial burrows of 2.4 m length were monitored regularly for Burrowing Owl and other vertebrate use over two non-breeding seasons (October through March, 2001 to 2003). Six types of burrows, differing in diameter (15, 20, or 25 cm) and number of openings (two or three), were monitored. Small-diameter (15 cm) burrows accounted for 79% of all Burrowing Owl use. Burrowing Owl use of artificial burrows was not related to …

Closing The Gap: Education Requirements Of The 21st Century Production Workforce, Kyle B. Stone, Karen Kaminski, Gene Gloeckner
Journal of STEM Teacher Education
Due to the large number of individuals retiring over the next ten years a critical shortage of people available to work within the manufacturing industry is looming (Dychtwald, Erickson, & Morison, 2006). This shortage is exacerbated by the lack of a properly educated workforce that meets the demands of the 21st century manufacturer (Judy & D’Amico, 1997). Combine these two issues and the result is a steady reduction in qualified candidates for the millions of jobs available in the manufacturing industry. The purpose of this research was to identify if a knowledge gap exists between the manufacturing industry and the …

The Effectiveness Of Instructional Methods Based On Learning Style Preferences Of Agricultural Students: A Research Tool For Continuous Improvement For Faculty In Career And Technical Education (Cte) Programs, Dominick E. Fazarro, Tim Pannkuk, Dwayne Pavelock, Darcy Hubbard
Journal of STEM Teacher Education
This study was conducted to research learning style preferences of agriculture students. Specifically, the objectives which guided the study were: (1) to determine the learning style preferences of undergraduate agricultural students enrolled in a given Soil Science course and (2) to ascertain if there were differences in the students’ course grade average (CGA) in the given Soil Science course when the treatment group were taught according to their learning style preferences versus the control group. For research question two, there was a hypothesis statement to determine if modifying the instructional approach to the students’ learning style preference for the treatment …

A common thread in discussions about the Next Generation Catalog is that it should incorporate features beyond the mere textual, one-way presentation of data. At the same time, traditional textual description of music materials often prohibits effective use of the catalog by specialists and nonspecialists alike. Librarians at Bowling Green State University have developed the HueTunes project to explore already established connections between music, color, and emotion, and incorporate those connections into a nontextual discovery tool that could enhance interdisciplinary as well as specialist use of the catalog.

Social-Emotional Resilience In Middle School Girls, Stephanie Evans Powers
Social-Emotional Resilience In Middle School Girls, Stephanie Evans Powers
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During middle school, many girls experience changes toward a more negative affect and decreases in confidence, optimism, and curiosity (Kline & Short, 1991; Pipher, 1994). The aim of this dissertation is to provide a contextually grounded and multidimensional understanding of social-emotional resiliency in middle school girls as constructed and defined by the students, their teachers, their social reference groups and the researcher (Ungar, 2004). To address the subjective nature of resiliency, qualitative methodology was chosen as the most appropriate approach. Five girls from a middle school in a small, Midwestern town participated in the study. Five teachers who nominated students …

The current economic recovery looks long and difficult, and makes providing for an ageing population an even greater challenge. Will economies rebound to provide for the health care needs of retirees? At a conference organised in November 2008 by the Sim Kee Boon Institute’s newly launched Center for Silver Security at the Singapore Management University, Todd Groome of the International Monetary Fund spoke on how the ongoing financial crisis could shape retirement risk.

Creating Physical Education Lesson Plans Based On Ekvall’S Ten Dimensions Of A Creative Climate, Francis C. Palisano
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project focused on the development of ten physical education lesson plans based on the creative climate research done by Goran Ekvall (1984, 1996, 1999). Each lesson plan was created with a deliberate focus on one dimension of a creative climate. The lessons were taught to a fourth grade class, twice a week, for forty minutes each class period.
The project contains hypotheses and observations from the teacher, as well as responses from the students based their experiences of Ekvall’s ten dimensions. These observations and responses go a long way in determining that there is a definite need for Ekvall’s …

Creating The Future: Conceptualizing A How-To Guide To Creative Problem Solving, Paul D. Reali
Creating The Future: Conceptualizing A How-To Guide To Creative Problem Solving, Paul D. Reali
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
This project conceptualized a business-market book that would serve as a how-to
guide to Creative Problem Solving (CPS), filling a perceived gap in the current literature.
The conceptualization is culminated in a formal book proposal created to publishing
industry standards, which includes an annotated outline of the entire work and sample
chapters. While conceptualizing the book, current CPS models were re-conceptualized as
well, resulting in a proposed new approach to CPS which describes each process stage as
a competency, to be called the Creative Problem Solving: Competencies Model. The
competencies are briefly described, in anticipation of future research. The model’s …

Peace Without Justice, Or Justice Without Peace?, Clair Apodaca
Peace Without Justice, Or Justice Without Peace?, Clair Apodaca
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Peace without justice is an illusion. The use of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate and prosecute human rights violations not only provides restorative justice for those harmed by the wrongdoing but also retributive justice towards the perpetrators. Restorative justice seeks to help heal the wounds of the victims and community by acknowledging and witnessing the pain and suffering of the victim. Retributive justice seeks to punish the offenders. The hope is that retribution will deter or prevent future acts of violence by holding perpetrators accountable for the violations of human rights, genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. …

Educational Spending: Kentucky Vs. Other States, William Hoyt, Christopher Jepsen, Kenneth R. Troske
CBER Research Report
Excerpts from the executive summary:
The passage of the Kentucky Educational Reform Act (KERA) in 1990 had a dramatic impact on the funding of primary and secondary education in the state. The amount of money spent on education increased significantly with the passage of KERA with districts in rural areas of the state experiencing the largest growth in spending (Hoyt, 1999). This has led to a decline in the disparity between rural and urban districts in education spending. However, despite the increase in educational spending, Kentucky still lags behind the typical state in the U.S. in spending per student (Troske, …

Interrogation Of Detainees: Extending A Hand Or A Boot?, Amos N. Guiora
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The current "war on terror" provides the Bush administration with a unique opportunity to both establish clear guidelines for the interrogation of detainees and to make a forceful statement about American values. How the government chooses to act can promote either an ethical commitment to the norms of civil society, or an attitude analogous to Toby Keith's "American Way," where Keith sings that "you'll be sorry that you messed with the USofA, 'Cuz we'll put a boot in your ass, It's the American Way."
