“This Isn’T Like Diphtheria, You Know?”: The Sociocultural Context Of Human Papillomavirus Immunization, Potential Mandates, And Narratives Of Risk Among, Hannah Louise Helmy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many in the biomedical community have praised the recently released Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, Gardasil, for having the potential to significantly reduce the disease burden of cervical cancer and genital warts. However, complex intersections of ideology, morality, and politics have made this new vaccine considerably contested, particularly as public debate has turned to the ethics of state-mandated HPV vaccination for 11-12 year old girls. Subsequently, the extent to which mandatory vaccinations are accepted by parents and implications regarding the infringement of these coercive measures on their rights to make health care decisions for their children has become powerfully positioned in …

The lion Panthera leo is one of the world's most charismatic carnivores and is one of Africa's key predators. Here, we used a large dataset from 357 lions comprehending 1.13 megabases of sequence data and genotypes from 22 microsatellite loci to characterize its recent evolutionary history. Patterns of molecular genetic variation in multiple maternal (mtDNA), paternal (Y-chromosome), and biparental nuclear (nDNA) genetic markers were compared with patterns of sequence and subtype variation of the lion feline immunodeficiency virus (FIVPle), a lentivirus analogous to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In spite of the ability of lions to disperse long distances, …

Impact Of Seizure-Related Variables And Psychopathology On Health-Related Quality Of Life In Pediatric Epilepsy, Aja M. Meyer Nov 2008

Impact Of Seizure-Related Variables And Psychopathology On Health-Related Quality Of Life In Pediatric Epilepsy, Aja M. Meyer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Psychopathology typically is a lasting condition that is persistent from childhood to adulthood. Therefore, it is imperative that children with health conditions and comorbid psychiatric disorders are treated for both conditions as they are likely to have a significant negative impact on children's overall health-related quality of life (HRQL). More specifically, it is important to identify the variables that affect HRQL in children with epilepsy. Research has shown that biomedical variables such as seizure severity and frequency have only moderate relationships with HRQL; therefore, additional factors, such as depression and anxiety, must be identified so that they also may be …

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Contact Rates In Female White-Tailed Deer, Lene J. Kjaer, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen Nov 2008

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Contact Rates In Female White-Tailed Deer, Lene J. Kjaer, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen

Publications

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are important game mammals and potential reservoirs of diseases of domestic livestock; thus, diseases of deer are of great concern to wildlife managers. Contact, either direct or indirect, is necessary for disease transmission, but we know little about the ecological contexts that promote intrasexual contact among deer. Using pair-wise direct contacts estimated from Global Positioning System collar locations and joint utilization distributions (JUDs), we assessed habitats in which contacts occur to test whether direct contact rates among female white-tailed deer in different social groups differs among land-cover types. We also tested whether contact rates …

Ph-Induced Activation Of Arenavirus Membrane Fusion Is Antagonized By Small-Molecule Inhibitors, Joanne York, Dongcheng Dai, Sean M. Amberg, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The arenavirus envelope glycoprotein (GPC) mediates viral entry through pH-induced membrane fusion in the endosome. This crucial process in the viral life cycle can be specifically inhibited in the New World arenaviruses by the small-molecule compound ST-294. Here, we show that ST-294 interferes with GPC-mediated membrane fusion by targeting the interaction of the G2 fusion subunit with the stable signal peptide (SSP). We demonstrate that amino acid substitutions at lysine-33 of the Junin virus SSP confer resistance to ST-294 and engender de novo sensitivity to ST-161, a chemically distinct inhibitor of the Old World Lassa fever virus. These compounds, as …

Antibody Responses Of Cervids (Cervus Elaphus) Following Experimental Mycobacterium Bovis Infection And The Implications For Immunodiagnosis, Noel P. Harrington, Om P. Surujballi, John F. Prescott, J. Robert Duncan, W. Ray Waters, Konstantin Lyashchenko, Rena Greenwald

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Captive and free-ranging wildlife animals are implicated in the maintenance and transmission of bovine tuberculosis and therefore pose a significant obstacle to eradication of the disease from domestic livestock. The current antemortem diagnostic method, the intradermal tuberculin skin test, is impractical for routine use with many wild animals. Antibody-based assays are particularly attractive because the animals are handled only once and immediate processing of the sample is not required. This report characterizes the antibody responses of red deer-elk hybrids (Cervus elaphus) against Mycobacterium bovis and subsequently evaluates the diagnostic performance of select antigens in a rapid-test format. Sequential …

Genetic Markers Of Igg Influence The Outcome Of Infection With Hepatitis C Virus, Janardan P. Pandey, Aryan M. Namboodiri, Yuqun Luo, Yuping Wu, Robert C. Elston, David L. Thomas, Hugo R. Rosen, James J. Goedert

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We examined the role that immunoglobulin GM and KM allotypes—genetic markers of γ and κ chains, respectively—play in the outcome of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in white Americans. A total of 119 persons who had cleared HCV and 111 with persistent HCV infection were genotyped for the presence of several GM and KM determinants. Persistent HCV infection was more than three times as likely (odds ratio, 3.50; P = .01) in subjects who were carriers of the GM3 allele than in those who were noncarriers. These results show that particular GM alleles may be important determinants of the outcome …

In Vitro Evaluation Of Antibacterial Activity Using Crude Extracts Of Catharanthus Roseus L. (G.) Don., S. Ramya Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Catharanthus roseus popularly known as Madagascar periwinkle is a potential source for anti-leukemic alkaloids. The present study aims to evaluate the possibility for the presence of novel bio-active compounds against pathogenic bacteria, as most of the pathogens develop drug resistance against commonly used antibiotics. To determine antibacterial activity, crude extracts from different parts of C. roseus were tested against bacterial strains of clinical significance. Extraction of bio-active principles in appropriate solvent was followed by evaluation of antibacterial activity by disc diffusion assay against selected bacterial stains. Data depicts that the pattern of inhibition largely depends upon extraction procedure, plant part, …

Lifestyle Of Shellmound Builders In Brazil (Galley Proofs), Sabine Eggers, C. C. Petronilho, K. Brandt, J. Filippini, Karl J. Reinhard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The contact of inland and coastal prehistoric groups in Brazil is believed to have been restricted to regions with no geographical barrier, as is the case in the Ribeira de Iguape valley. The inland osteological collection from the riverine shellmound Moraes (5800–4500 BP) represents a unique opportunity to test this assumption for this region. Despite cultural similarities between riverine and coastal shellmounds, important ecological and site distribution differences are expected to impact on lifestyle. The purpose of this study is thus to document and interpret health and lifestyle indicators in Moraes in comparison to coastal shellmound groups. Specifically we test …
