The Dynamic Nature Of Eukaryotic Genomes, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Analyses of diverse eukaryotes reveal that genomes are dynamic, sometimes dramatically so. In numerous lineages across the eukaryotic tree of life, DNA content varies within individuals throughout life cycles and among individuals within species. Discovery of examples of genome dynamism is accelerating as genome sequences are completed from diverse eukaryotes. Though much is known about genomes in animals, fungi, and plants, these lineages represent only 3 of the 60-200 lineages of eukaryotes. Here, we discuss diverse genomic strategies in exemplar eukaryotic lineages, including numerous microbial eukaryotes, to reveal dramatic variation that challenges established views of genome evolution. For example, in …

Ecological surprises, substantial and unanticipated changes in the abundance of one or more species that result from previously unsuspected processes, are a common outcome of both experiments and observations in community and population ecology. Here, we give examples of such surprises along with the results of a survey of well-established field ecologists, most of whom have encountered one or more surprises over the course of their careers. Truly surprising results are common enough to require their consideration in any reasonable effort to characterize nature and manage natural resources. We classify surprises as dynamic-, pattern-, or intervention-based, and we speculate on …

Can Might Make Right? The Use Of Force To Impose Democracy And The Arthurian Dilemma In The Modern Era, Scott Thompson
Can Might Make Right? The Use Of Force To Impose Democracy And The Arthurian Dilemma In The Modern Era, Scott Thompson
Law and Contemporary Problems
US President George W. Bush used force to bring the Taliban to its knees and create a fledgling democracy in Afghanistan, then invaded Iraq with the end goal of establishing a democracy there, as well. Meanwhile, presidential hopeful Barack Obama praised those who built democracy's arsenal to vanquish fascism, and who then built a series of alliances and a world order that would ultimately defeat communism, seeming to extol and vindicate the previous US efforts to impose democracy by force. These two leaders' struggles to nail down a definitive answer on whether force should ever be used to impose democracy …

Predicting Crime, M. Todd Henderson, Justin Wolfers, Eric Zitzewitz
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Prediction markets have been proposed for a variety of public policy purposes, but no one has considered their application in perhaps the most obvious policy area: crime. This paper proposes and examines the use of prediction markets to forecast crime rates and the impact on crime from changes to crime policy, such as resource allocation, policing strategies, sentencing, postconviction treatment, and so on. We make several contributions to the prediction markets and crime forecasting literature. First, we argue that prediction markets are especially useful in crime rate forecasting and criminal policy analysis, because information relevant to decisionmakers is voluminous, dispersed, …

Global Climate Change National Security Implications, Carolyn Pumphrey Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
On March 29-31, 2007, the Strategic Studies Institute and the Triangle Institute for Security Studies conducted a colloquium on “Global Climate Change: National Security Implications” held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This volume is based on the proceedings of this conference. Chapter 1 addresses the growing historical awareness of the threat and outlines the science of climate-change. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on how climate change might affect human societies and the degree to which it might cause or exacerbate violence and conflict. Particular attention is paid to the implications for the security of the United States. Chapters 4 and …

OBJECTIVE: To examine the kinetic ability of embryonic human epithelial INT-407 cells to express messenger ribonucleic acid mRNA for various cytokines and chemokines in response to Campylobacter jejuni C. jejuni stimulation. METHODS: In an experimental single-blind study, cultured embryonic human epithelial INT-407 cells were treated with different concentrations of viable C. jejuni, its sonicated, and filtered supernatant. A modified non-radioactive in situ hybridization using probe cocktails was used to measure mRNA levels for the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin IL-1beta, IL-6, interferon-gamma IFN-gamma, tumour necrosis factor TNF-alpha, transforming growth factor TGF-beta1, and IL-8, and the anti-inflammatory cytokines, IL-4 and IL-10. The study …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of procalcitonin PCT to identify critically ill patients with sepsis in comparison with leukocyte count, body temperature, C-reactive protein CRP, erythrocyte sedimentation rate ESR, and interleukin-6 IL-6. METHODS: We performed our prospective observational study in 75 patients admitted with acute systemic inflammatory response and suspected infection. The final diagnosis was systemic inflammatory response syndrome SIRS in 38 patients, sepsis in 22, severe sepsis in 10, and suspected viral sepsis in 5. Blood samples were taken on the first day of hospitalization in Al Mwasaa Hospital, Damascus, Syrian Arab Republic, from July 2006 to January 2007. …

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency of cryptosporidiosis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ELISA and microscopy and its relationship with diarrhea. METHODS: The study was prospectively performed in the Parasitology Laboratory and Pediatric Outpatient Clinic of the Research Hospital, Yuzuncu Yil University, Van, Turkey between 2004 and 2006. Stool samples were obtained from a total of 2000 children with diarrhea, 870 females, and 1130 males aging 0-15 years as study group, and 100 children of the same age were randomly selected as a control group. The flotation method was firstly carried out for all stool samples in saturated zinc sulfate solution, then …

Acipensericola petersoni n. gen., n. sp. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) infects the heart of the American paddlefish Polyodon spathula (Walbaum, 1792) in the Mississippi Delta. It has robust, spike-like body spines arranged in ventrolateral transverse rows; a bowl-shaped anterior sucker centered on the mouth and having minute spines on the inner anteroventral surface only; a pharynx; an inverse U-shaped ceca extending to near the posterior body end; intercecal testes comprising a pre-ovarian testicular column plus a single testis posteriorly; an extensively lobed ovary located medially and immediately posterior to the testicular column; a spherical ootype that is intercecal and post-ovarian; a Laurer’s …

Introduction: Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a major complication of chemotherapy, costly in terms of morbidity, mortality and associated financial expenditure. The present study was conducted with the goal of highlighting FN as a serious problem in Pakistan, with the longer term objective of improved cancer survival, reduction in length of stay (LOS) in hospital, morbidity, mortality and costs in our existing developing country scenario. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on Patients, > or =18 years, admitted with FN as a consequence of chemotherapy at a referral hospital in Karachi from 1st September 2006 to 30th April 2007. Results: A …

In Vitro Comparison Of 360° Unirotational Disposable Prophylaxis Angles Versus 90° Reciprocating Disposable Prophylaxis Angles On Spatter During Rubber Cup Polishing, Kelly Marie Schulz
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the traditional 360° unirotational disposable prophylaxis angle (DPA) to a 90° reciprocating DPA in terms of spatter production. The 2x3x3 factorial design involved: 2 types of DP As x 3 types of prophylaxis pastes (fine, medium and coarse) x 3 dental handpiece revolutions per minute (rpm) settings (1500, 2000, and 3000). The eStylus'™ operated the DP As under controlled speeds. Using a mounted dental manikin, 90° reciprocating DP As and 360° unirotational DP As were evaluated for spatter production with the use of prophylaxis pastes of various grits in 270 …
