"Bearing The Weight Of A Mother's Mood" : Does A History Of Depression Influence A Woman's Attitudes About Having Children?, Beth Sadavoy
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study attempted to answer the question of whether there is a relationship between a woman's history of depression and her feelings and attitudes about having children. No research has been done on this precise topic; therefore this study was also intended to ascertain whether this issue was substantial enough to warrant further research and investigation. A mixed method online 16-item questionnaire was completed by 66 participants, 60 of whom met inclusion criteria and were included in the findings. Two qualitative questions were included in order to illuminate the quantitative data. Participants were asked about their experience with depression, interest …
The Healthy Solitary Person, Laurel Lynn Shortell
The Healthy Solitary Person, Laurel Lynn Shortell
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis explored the concept of the healthy solitary person who prefers to spend time alone and pursue activities independently and whose independent way of life serves as a source of strength and pleasure. Despite the American ideal of the rugged individualist, the solitary person is often pathologized, seen as being in a transitional state, or not considered at all by much of the psychological literature and by American society at large. This paper examined the societal role played by solitude and drew from self psychology and object relations theory to answer the following question: how can a solitary lifestyle …

Shades Of Gray : Lesbian Therapists Explore The Complexities Of Self-Disclosure To Heterosexual Clients, Molly Caitlin Thomas
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the ways in which lesbian therapists negotiate self-disclosure of their sexual identity—or come out—to heterosexual clients and how such disclosures, or non-disclosures, affect the therapeutic relationship as well as the therapists' personal and professional identities. Twelve lesbian licensed clinical social workers were interviewed for this study. Participants were questioned about their self-disclosure practices of sexual identity with heterosexual clients, how factors such as their work environment and aspects of their social identity shaped their thinking and practice of self-disclosure of sexual identity, and the extent to which issues of heterosexism …
Self Psychology At Work In Trauma Therapy, Heidi Griffin Street
Self Psychology At Work In Trauma Therapy, Heidi Griffin Street
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical thesis examines self psychology and trauma theory, specifically Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery. A brief history of the psychodynamic study of the influence of trauma on mental illness will be given to orient the present discussion in the field of psychodynamic theory. Major concepts of self psychology, such as selfobject, mirroring, idealization and twinship will be reviewed. Herman's stages of recovery for the trauma survivor, namely establishing safety, remembrance and mourning, and reconnection will be summarized. I will then present my understanding of trauma as anti-mirroring behavior, trauma's ability to corrupt the idealized, and the twinship qualities of …

Program Approach For Childheaded Households In Zambia, Samson Chama
Program Approach For Childheaded Households In Zambia, Samson Chama
Theses and Dissertations
Using an emergent design, this study developed a program approach for young people in the child headed households of Zambia. Phase I dealt with prior ethnography, Phase II focused on independent living services, and Phase III concerned translation to Zambia. A total of 36 participants from Richmond, consisting of 20 Richmond Department of Social Services workers and youth and 16 Africans, were recruited. Three major themes emerged: feasibility, content, and quality. Lessons learned about translational research highlight the need for uniformity in a cultural screen’s composition. This might enhance the richness of perspectives on young people. Lessons for the Department …
Relationship Of Anger Trait And Anger Expression To C-Reactive Protein In Post-Menopausal Women, Rosalyn Gross
Relationship Of Anger Trait And Anger Expression To C-Reactive Protein In Post-Menopausal Women, Rosalyn Gross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women, accounting for one in six deaths in 2004. One third of women over the age of forty will develop coronary heart disease in their lifetime. The role of chronic and excessive inflammation and risk factors, such as smoking and high cholesterol, are now well-established factors contributing to coronary heart disease pathology. A knowledge gap exists in that little is known about the mechanisms by which psychosocial factors, such as anger, may be associated with pro-inflammatory processes that contribute to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in women. The purpose of …
Characteristics And Motivations Of Rural Compared To Urban Primary Physicians And Nurse Practitioners In New Mexico, Heather Ouellette, Teddy Warner
Characteristics And Motivations Of Rural Compared To Urban Primary Physicians And Nurse Practitioners In New Mexico, Heather Ouellette, Teddy Warner
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Introduction: While 20% of Americans live in rural areas, less than 10% of the nations physicians practice there. In New Mexico, 60% of the population lives in rural communities although only 40% of state's health care workforce can be found there. Federal and state governments, medical schools, and private foundations have all studied and attempted to find ways to train, recruit, and retain more primary care clinicians to rural areas. Many rural recruitment programs are predicated upon older research and investigations involving medical students and physicians from earlier generations. This study attempts to update and determine if there are new …

Likelihood Of Recurrent High Emergency Department Utilization By Indigent Patients, Tony Salazar, Matthew Tennison, Daniel Derksen, Betty Skipper, David Sklar
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Recurrent utilization of emergency medical services by certain patient populations is a challenge at the University of New Mexico Emergency Department (UNM ED) and at other institutions. Data suggest that a significant percentage of patients treated in the UNM ED could be treated in other, less costly outpatient settings. Existing data were used to analyze trends in UNM ED utilization among four distinct populations — managed uninsured patients (UNM Care), unmanaged uninsured patients (Self-pay), managed Medicaid patients (Salud), and unmanaged Medicaid patients (Medicaid). We hypothesized that those who previously had high usage of the Emergency Department (ED) in the index …

Identification Of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Docking Sites In Enzymes That Metabolize Phosphatidylinositols And Inositol Phosphates, Marcos Sosa, Kevin Caldwell, Colin Buckley
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Background: Reversible interactions between the components of cellular signaling pathways allow for the formation and dissociation of multimolecular complexes with spatial and temporal resolution and, thus, are an important means of integrating multiple signals into a coordinated cellular response. Several mechanisms that underlie these interactions have been identified, including the recognition of specific docking sites, termed a D-domain and FXFP motif, on proteins that bind mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). We recently found that phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C-γ1 (PLC-γ1) directly binds to extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 (ERK2), a MAPK, via a D-domain-dependent mechanism. In addition, we identified D-domain sequences in several other …
A Generic Approach And Framework For Managing Complex Information, Essam Mansour
A Generic Approach And Framework For Managing Complex Information, Essam Mansour
Doctoral
Several application domains, such as healthcare, incorporate domain knowledge into their day-to-day activities to standardise and enhance their performance. Such incorporation produces complex information, which contains two main clusters (active and passive) of information that have internal connections between them. The active cluster determines the recommended procedure that should be taken as a reaction to specific situations. The passive cluster determines the information that describes these situations and other descriptive information plus the execution history of the complex information. In the healthcare domain, a medical patient plan is an example for complex information produced during the disease management activity from …

A Survey Of Print Media Coverage Of Domestic Violence In New Mexico, 2001-2004, Stephanie Pendergrass, Ann Winegardner, David Bennahum
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Intimate partner violence has often been considered a problem best discussed within the framework of social advocacy or more recently the criminal justice system. However, it is important to realize that it is also a key public health issue to which widespread public attention must be turned in order to ameliorate its far-reaching effects. Research has shown that the public would likely be willing to provide support to domestic violence prevention programs if it were to recognize the full extent of the problem. However, it has been argued that our society has an underlying belief that intimate partner violence is …

Witnessing Intimate Partner Violence As A Child Increases The Likelihood Of Becoming A Perpetrator, But Not Becoming A Victim, Bernadette Ramone, Tuhama Rihani, Melissa Valdez, Amy Ernst
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Background: The association of perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV) with drug and alcohol use, abuse as a child, age, socioeconomics and race has been established. The relation between IPV perpetrators and being an adult who witnessed IPV as a child (ACW) is not fully established, although in a previous study no association was found between IPV victims and ACWs. Objective: The objective of the present study was to determine whether perpetrators of IPV could be identified in a busy emergency department (ED) and were more likely than non-perpetrators to be ACWs. The hypothesis of the present study was that …

Hundreds of genes show aberrant DNA hypermethylation in cancer, yet little is known about the causes of this hypermethylation. We identified RIL as a frequent methylation target in cancer. In search for factors that influence RIL hypermethylation, we found a 12-bp polymorphic sequence around its transcription start site that creates a long allele. Pyrosequencing of homozygous tumors revealed a 2.1-fold higher methylation for the short alleles (P<0.001). Bisulfite sequencing of cancers heterozygous for RIL showed that the short alleles are 3.1-fold more methylated than the long (P<0.001). The comparison of expression levels between unmethylated long and short EBV-transformed cell lines showed no difference in expression in vivo. Electrophorectic mobility shift assay showed that the inserted region of the long allele binds Sp1 and Sp3 transcription factors, a binding that is absent in the short allele. Transient transfection of RIL allele-specific transgenes showed no effects of the additional Sp1 site on transcription early on. However, stable transfection of methylation-seeded constructs showed gradually decreasing transcription levels from the short allele with eventual spreading of de novo methylation. In contrast, the long allele showed stable levels of expression over time as measured by luciferase and approximately 2-3-fold lower levels of methylation by bisulfite sequencing (P<0.001), suggesting that the polymorphic Sp1 site protects against time-dependent silencing. Our finding demonstrates that, in some genes, hypermethylation in cancer is dictated by protein-DNA interactions at the promoters and provides a novel mechanism by which genetic polymorphisms can influence an epigenetic state.

Purpose: Previous studies have described gamma-synuclein as a protein highly expressed in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), and a loss of RGCs correlates with a downregulation of gamma-synuclein gene expression in glaucoma. Here we asked whether gamma-synuclein expression in the retina can be considered a specific marker of RGCs.
Methods: gamma-Synuclein expression was examined with immunohistochemistry in retinal sections from normal and glaucomatous human eyes. Primary cultures of RGCs from Sprague-Dawley rats purified by sequential immunopanning using a monoclonal antibody to Thy1-1, cultures of A7 immortalized optic nerve astrocytes from newborn rats, and the immortalized RGC-5 cell line were studied using …
