Mitochondrial Redox Signaling By P66shc Is Involved In Regulating Androgenic Growth Stimulation Of Human Prostate Cancer Cells., Suresh Veeramani, Ta-Chun Yuan, Fen-Fen Lin, Ming-Fong Lin

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

p66Shc is shown to negatively regulate the life span in mice through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Recent reports, however, revealed that p66Shc protein level is significantly elevated in several human cancer tissues and growth-stimulated carcinoma cells, suggesting a mitogenic and carcinogenic role for p66Shc. In this communication, we demonstrate for the first time that p66Shc mediates androgenic growth signals in androgen-sensitive human prostate cancer cells through mitochondrial ROS production. Growth stimulation of prostate cancer cells with 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is accompanied by increased p66Shc level and ROS production, which is abolished by antioxidant treatments. However, antioxidant treatments do not affect …

Interoperability Measurement, Thomas C. Ford Aug 2008

Interoperability Measurement, Thomas C. Ford

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents an inaugural general method of measuring the collaborative and confrontational interoperability of a heterogeneous set of systems in the context of an operational process. The method is holistic, fundamental, flexible, and mathematical in nature and accommodates all types of systems and interoperations. The method relates the interoperability measurement to measures of operational effectiveness for confrontational operational processes. Extant leveling methods of describing interoperability are shown to be a special case of the more general method given in this research and the general interoperability measurement method is demonstrated through the presentation of coalition interoperability, suppression of enemy air …

Impact Of Service Learning On Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders (Ebd), Anne Jenkauski Aug 2008

Impact Of Service Learning On Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders (Ebd), Anne Jenkauski

Theses and Graduate Projects

Service learning is "an education experience that provides students with the opportunity to participate in community-based activities and integrated classroom experiences" (Frey, 1999, p.337). Service learning is an approach that can be used to teach social skills in the "real world setting" to students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD) (Seitsinger, 2005). This research examines the question, "how effective is the use of service learning in teaching social skills to students with EBD?" I piloted service learning projects in two of my social skills classes for students with EBD in a suburban middle school. Following the projects, I conducted in-depth …

Bolivia: Combustion Efficiency Of Industrial Biomass Stove, Kimberly A. Gorsek, Alexander A. Ramsey Aug 2008

Bolivia: Combustion Efficiency Of Industrial Biomass Stove, Kimberly A. Gorsek, Alexander A. Ramsey

ETHOS Technical Reports

An independent company ProLeña located in the capital city of Bolivia, La Paz, offered two University of Dayton students the opportunity to work and travel. Two independent projects were researched and developed by the chemical engineering students, Kimberly Gorsek and Alexander Ramsey. Gorsek analyzed the combustion efficiency of an industrial biomass stove. The results from subsequent testing concluded that the application of controlled excess air in the combustion chamber of the stove would lower the amount of fuel required and reduce emitted carbon monoxide concentrations. Ramsey’s project was to develop and design a prototype drying kiln for wood. Ramsey's initial …

Control Of Autonomous Robot Teams In Industrial Applications, Athanasios Tsalatsanis Aug 2008

Control Of Autonomous Robot Teams In Industrial Applications, Athanasios Tsalatsanis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of teams of coordinated mobile robots in industrial settings such as underground mining, toxic waste cleanup and material storage and handling, is a viable and reliable approach to solving such problems that require or involve automation. In this thesis, abilities a team of mobile robots should demonstrate in order to successfully perform a mission in industrial settings are identified as a set of functional components. These components are related to navigation and obstacle avoidance, localization, task achieving behaviors and mission planning. The thesis focuses on designing and developing functional components applicable to diverse missions involving teams of mobile …

Hugo Who? G. F. Arnold’S Alternative Early Approach To Psychology And Law, Brian H. Bornstein, Steven D. Penrod

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Hugo Münsterberg is widely regarded as the founder of the discipline of psychology and law, and the publication of his book On the Witness Stand (1908) is considered the signal event in its founding. However, numerous other researchers were conducting and publishing research on psycholegal topics in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and at least one other book on psychology and law— G. F. Arnold’s Psychology Applied to Legal Evidence and Other Constructions of Law (1906)—appeared prior to the publication of Münsterberg’s work. The present paper contrasts these two seminal publications, focusing on their relevance to the “basic-versus-applied” debate …

Background: Monogamy, together with abstinence, partner reduction, and condom use, is widely advocated as a key behavioral strategy to prevent HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined the association between the number of sexual partners and the risk of HIV seropositivity among men and women presenting for HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) in northern Tanzania.

Methodology/ Principal Findings: Clients presenting for HIV VCT at a community-based AIDS service organization in Moshi, Tanzania were surveyed between November 2003 and December 2007. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, reasons for testing, sexual behaviors, and symptoms were collected. Men and women were categorized by …
