The Dose-Response Of Nitrous Oxide In Postoperative Nausea In Patients Undergoing Gynecologic Laparoscopic Surgery: A Preliminary Study., Boris Mraovic, Tatjana Simurina, Zdenko Sonicki, Neven Skitarelic, Tong J. Gan
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Whether nitrous oxide (N(2)O) increases the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after laparoscopic gynecologic surgery is still controversial, which may be due to the administration of different concentrations of inspired N(2)O. We investigated whether N(2)O results in a dose-response increase in PONV. METHODS: Patients undergoing gynecologic laparoscopic surgery were randomized to receive 30% oxygen with air (G0, n = 46), 50% N(2)O with oxygen (G50, n = 46), or 70% N(2)O with oxygen (G70, n = 45). A standardized general anesthetic was used with no PONV prophylaxis. Known risk factors for PONV were controlled. Metoclopramide was used …

Hypertension-Induced Renal Fibrosis And Spironolactone Response Vary By Rat Strain And Mineralocorticoid Receptor Gene Expression, Larisa H. Cavallari, Lucy A. Fashingbauer, Joseph R. Camp, Stephen T. King, David L. Geenen
Peer Reviewed Articles
Introduction. Aldosterone promotes renal fibrosis via the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), thus contributing to hypertension-induced nephropathy. We investigated whether MR gene expression influences renal fibrosis and MR antagonist response in a two-kidney, one-clip hypertensive rat model.
Materials and methods. Brown Norway (BN), Lewis, and ACI rats were randomised to spironolactone 20 mg/kg/day or water by gavage, starting four weeks after left renal artery clipping. Blood pressure was measured bi-weekly by tail cuff. After eight weeks of treatment, right kidneys were removed and examined for fibrosis and gene expression. Rats of each strain undergoing no intervention served as controls.

Background:
Plasma alpha2-antiplasmin (α2AP) is a rapid and effective inhibitor of the fibrinolytic enzyme plasmin. Congenital α2AP deficiency results in a severe hemorrhagic disorder due to accelerated fibrinolysis. It is well established that in the presence of thrombin-activated factor XIII (FXIIIa), α2AP becomes covalently ligated to the distal α chains of fibrin or fibrinogen at lysine 303 (two potential sites per molecule). Some time ago we showed that α2AP is covalently linked to plasma fibrinogen . That singular observation led to our hypothesis that native plasma factor XIII (FXIII), …

We applied a satellite remote sensing based production efficiency model (PEM) using an integrated AVHRR and MODIS FPAR/LAI time series with a regionally corrected NCEP/NCAR reanalysis daily surface meteorology and NASA/GEWEX Surface Radiation Budget shortwave solar radiation inputs to assess annual terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) for the pan-Arctic basin and Alaska from 1983 to 2005. Our results show that low temperature constraints on Boreal-Arctic NPP are decreasing by 0.43% per year (P < 0.001), whereas a positive trend in vegetation moisture constraints of 0.49% per year (P = 0.04) are offsetting the potential benefits of longer growing seasons and contributing to recent disturbances in NPP. The PEM simulations of NPP seasonality, annual …

Contributions Of Body Fat And Effort In The 5k Run: Age And Body Weight Handicap, Anne R. Crecelius, Paul M. Vanderburgh, Lloyd L. Laubach
Health and Sport Science Faculty Publications
The 5K handicap (5KH), designed to eliminate the body weight (BW) and age biases inherent in the 5K run time (RT), yields an adjusted RT (RTadj) that can be compared between runners of different BW and age. As hypothesized in a validation study, however, not all BW bias may be removed, because of the influences of body fatness (BF) and effort (run speed; essentially the inverse as measured by rating of perceived exertion (RPE)). This study's purpose was to determine the effects of BF and RPE on BW bias in the 5KH. For 99 male runners in a regional 5K …
Is Nigeria Ready For Inflation Targeting, Mbutor O. Mbutor
Is Nigeria Ready For Inflation Targeting, Mbutor O. Mbutor
Bullion
Inflation Targeting as a framework for monetary policy implementation simply describes a policy framework in which central banks accept and announce the realization of certain forecast targets of inflation, over a given time period, as the measure policy anchor and are accountable for deviations from actual inflation from the said target. The primary goal of the paper was to expose the prospects and challenges facing the implementation of inflation targeting in Nigeria. To put the subject in proper perspective, common terminologies often used in discussing lT were defined. The preconditions for effective lT were also highlighted. The paper has argued …
