Amino(Oligo)Thiophene-Based Environmentally Sensitive Biomembrane Chromophores, Ping Yan, Aifang Xie, Meide Wei, Leslie M. Loew
UCHC Articles - Research
There is a growing need for cellular imaging with fluorescent probes that emit at longer wavelengths to minimize the effects of absorption, autofluorescence and scattering from biological tissue. In this paper a series of new environmentally-sensitive hemicyanine dyes featuring amino(oligo)thiophene donors have been synthesized via aldol condensation between a 4-methylpyridinium salt and various amino(oligo)thiophene carboxaldehydes, which were, in turn, obtained from amination of bromo (oligo)thiophene carboxaldehyde. Side chains on these fluorophores impart a strong affinity for biological membranes. Compared with benzene analogues, these thiophene fluorophores show significant red shift in the absorption and emission spectra, offering compact red and near-infrared …
Actin Bundling: Initiation Mechanisms And Kinetics, Pavel Kraikivski, Boris M. Slepchenko, Igor Igor L. Novak
Actin Bundling: Initiation Mechanisms And Kinetics, Pavel Kraikivski, Boris M. Slepchenko, Igor Igor L. Novak
UCHC Articles - Research
Bundling of rapidly polymerizing actin filaments underlies dynamics of filopodial protrusions that play an important role in cell migration and cell-cell interaction. Recently, formation of actin bundles has been reconstituted in vitro and two scenarios of bundle initiation, involving binding of two filament tips and, alternatively, linking of the tip of one filament to the side of the other, -have been discussed. A first theoretical analysis is presented indicating that the two mechanisms can be distinguished experimentally. While both of them result counter-intuitively in comparable numbers of bundles, these numbers scale differently with the average bundle length. We propose an …

A Crucial Role In Cell Spreading For The Interaction Of Abl Pxxp Motifs With Crk And Nck Adaptors, Susumu Antoku, Gonzalo M. Rivera, Bruce J. Mayer
UCHC Articles - Research
The dynamic reorganization of actin structures helps to mediate the interaction of cells with their environment. The Abl non-receptor tyrosine kinase can modulate actin rearrangement during cell attachment. Here we report that the Abl PxxP motifs, which bind Src homology 3 (SH3) domains, are indispensable for the coordinated regulation of filopodium and focal adhesion formation and cell-spreading dynamics during attachment. Candidate Abl PxxP-motif-binding partners were identified by screening a comprehensive SH3-domain phage-display library. A combination of protein overexpression, silencing, pharmacological manipulation and mutational analysis demonstrated that the PxxP motifs of Abl exert their effects on actin organization by two distinct …
Analyzing A Pretrial Detainee's § 1983 Claims Under The Deliberate Indifference Standard Amounts To Punishment Of The Detainee, Leslie B. Elkins
Analyzing A Pretrial Detainee's § 1983 Claims Under The Deliberate Indifference Standard Amounts To Punishment Of The Detainee, Leslie B. Elkins
Seventh Circuit Review
While the Eighth Amendment holds that a convicted inmate may be punished if that punishment is not “cruel and unusual,” due process requires that a pretrial detainee not be punished at all. In 1979, the Supreme Court declared that the rights of a pretrial detainee are “at least as great” as those afforded a convicted prisoner. The Seventh Circuit’s recent decision Klebanowski v. Sheahan illustrates the modern trend of using the same “deliberate indifference” standard used to analyze convicted prisoners’ § 1983 claims when analyzing pretrial detainees’ § 1983 claims. By scrutinizing the way modern courts assess pretrial detainees’ § …
Welcome To The Family: A New Class Of Cognizable Claims Under The Pregnancy Discrimination Act, Teresa A. Minnich
Welcome To The Family: A New Class Of Cognizable Claims Under The Pregnancy Discrimination Act, Teresa A. Minnich
Seventh Circuit Review
In its recent decision Hall v. Nalco, the Seventh Circuit became the first Federal Circuit Court of Appeals to recognize a Title VII claim arising from adverse employment action following from a woman’s pursuit of in vitro fertilization, a type of infertility treatment. The Seventh Circuit’s decision creates a possible conflict with the Eighth and Second Circuits, which have both refused to recognize a cognizable Title VII claim where an employer excludes infertility treatments from insurance benefits plans. Furthermore, the Seventh Circuit’s reasoning articulates a murky distinction between childbearing capacity and fertility—although discrimination based on childbearing capacity violates Title …

License To Kill (The Dream Of Fair Housing): How The Seventh Circuit In Craigslist Gave Websites A Free Pass To Publish Discriminatory Housing Advertisements, Joseph J. Opron Iii
Seventh Circuit Review
In Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Inc. v. Craigslist, Inc., the Seventh Circuit held that Craigslist, Inc., could not be held liable under the Fair Housing Act’s ban on discriminatory advertisements for over 120 discriminatory housing advertisements complained about by the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee that were posted on Craigslist’s website. The court held that although newspapers and virtually every other publishing medium are consistently found liable under the Fair Housing Act’s ban on discriminatory advertisements, interactive computer service providers, such as Craigslist, are afforded civil immunity as a publishers or speakers of third-party content under the …

Policing Thought: United States V. Khattab And The Mens Rea Requirement Of 21 U.S.C. § 841, Anne M. Walker
Seventh Circuit Review
In United States v. Khattab, the Seventh Circuit identified a split between the circuits as to the mens rea required by the statute that criminalizes possessing or distributing precursor chemicals to illegal drugs. The relevant mens rea is “knowingly, or having reasonable cause to believe[.]” While the Tenth Circuit interprets “having reasonable cause to believe” to mean that a defendant must have something close to actual subjective knowledge that a chemical will be used to manufacture methamphetamines, the Eighth, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits interpret “having reasonable cause to believe,” to mean that an objective standard can be applied. The …

Unraveling Tinker: The Seventh Circuit Leaves Student Speech Hanging By A Thread, Marcia E. Powers
Seventh Circuit Review
In the bedrock student speech case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District, the Supreme Court ruled that students do not shed their First Amendment rights at the schoolhouse gate and that a school cannot prohibit student speech absent a “substantial disruption.” The Supreme Court defined “substantial disruption” as speech that “materially and substantially disrupt[s] the work and discipline of school.” In 2008, the Seventh Circuit adopted a new definition of “substantial disruption” in Nuxoll v. Indian Prairie School District No. 204, a case where a student challenged his school’s prohibition of the t-shirt slogan “Be Happy, Not …
High School Peer Networks And College Success: Lessons From Texas, Jason Fletcher, Marta Tienda
High School Peer Networks And College Success: Lessons From Texas, Jason Fletcher, Marta Tienda
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
This paper uses administrative data from the University of Texas-Austin to examine whether high school peer networks at college entry influence college achievement, measured by grade point average (GPA) and persistence. For each freshman cohort from 1993 through 2003 we calculate the number and ethnic makeup of college freshmen from each Texas high school, which we use as a proxy for freshmen “peer network.” Empirical specifications include high school fixed effects to control for unobservable differences across schools that influence both college enrollment behavior and academic performance. Using an IV/fixed effects strategy that exploits the introduction and expansion of the …

Cervical Screening A Study On The Prevalence Of The Risk-Factors For Developing Cervical Cancer Among Young Women, Jennifer Cann
Cervical Screening A Study On The Prevalence Of The Risk-Factors For Developing Cervical Cancer Among Young Women, Jennifer Cann
Dissertations
This study had three aims: to determine the prevalence of the risk-factors for contracting HPV (the Human Papillomavirus) and developing cervical cancer among young women; to establish if there are any links between the presence of these risk-factors, attendance for cervical screening and abnormal cervical screening results; and to ascertain the key barriers to the prevention of cervical cancer. The risk-factors were identified from literature as being sexually active at a young age, having increasing numbers of sexual partners for females and their partners, having had a sexually transmitted infection/disease (STI), smoking and long-term use of the oral contraceptive pill. …

Begin Partnership: Using Problem-Based Learning To Teach Genetics & Bioethics, Dina G. Markowitz, Michael J. Dupre, Susan Holt, Shaw-Ree Chen, Michael Wischnowski
Education Faculty/Staff Publications
A science education center at a university medical school had grant funding to develop a genetics curriculum unit, but needed a dissemination plan. A statewide science teacher organization that provided professional development training was facing decreased funding. These two groups combined their efforts, and created a unique partnership, called BEGIN (Biotechnology, Ethics and Genetics Instructional Network) that has brought together university medical and science faculty and high school biology teachers. The main goal of this partnership is to provide high school biology teachers with new instructional tools to face the challenges of teaching genetics and bioethics in a manner that …

Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith
Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
A comprehensive literature review and modeling effort have been conducted in order to determine which vital rates are most important to determining the growth and sustainability of marine mammal populations. Also addressed are the impacts of life-history, ecological, and genetic variation on vital rates and population sustainability and how much each vital parameter can change before a change in population trend would be expected. Additionally, the influence of ecological energetics and foraging strategies on vital rates and their limits of sustainable change are examined, and the nature of how an increase in sound in the marine environment might influence marine …

Safety Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions Of Municipal Waste Disposal Drivers, Swartz M. Stephen, Matthew A. Douglas
Safety Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions Of Municipal Waste Disposal Drivers, Swartz M. Stephen, Matthew A. Douglas
Journal of Transportation Management
The Theory of Planned Behavior was used to study factors useful for predicting Behavioral Intentions to commit unsafe acts while driving for commercial drivers working for municipal waste management operations centers. The Theory of Planned Behavior was found to be moderately effective in predicting behavioral intentions, particularly through the constructs of Attitude and Perceived Control. Driver perceptions of safety climate, self-assessed personal safety performance, risk aversion, and attitudes toward behavioral factors associated with engaging in risky behaviors while operating motor vehicles were studied. Risk aversion and driver perception of their own safety performance were also useful predictors of intention.

Characteristics of shiftwork schedules have implications for off-shift well-being. We examined the extent to which several shift characteristics (e.g., shift length, working sundays) are associated with three aspects of off-shift well-being: work-to-family conflict, physical well-being, and mental well-being. We also investigated whether these relationships differed in four nations. The Survey of Work and Time was completed by 906 healthcare professionals located in Australia, Brazil, Croatia, and the USA. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses supported the hypothesis that shiftwork characteristics account for significant unique variance in all three measures of well-being beyond that accounted for by work and family demands and personal …
