Analysis Of The Mechanism Of Transferrin-Iron Acquisition By Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Noto Jennifer Mcmillan
Analysis Of The Mechanism Of Transferrin-Iron Acquisition By Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, Noto Jennifer Mcmillan
Theses and Dissertations
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an obligate human pathogen that requires iron for its survival within the host. N. gonorrhoeae expresses high-affinity iron acquisition systems to acquire iron from host iron binding proteins. The gonococcal transferrin-iron uptake system is composed of two transferrin binding proteins, TbpA and TbpB. TbpA is a TonB-dependent, outer membrane transporter, while TbpB is a surface-exposed lipoprotein. Unlike TbpA, TbpB is not required for transferrin utilization, but makes the process more efficient. The precise mechanism by which TbpA and TbpB function to mediate transferrin-iron uptake has not been fully characterized. However, the mechanism of iron acquisition from transferrin …

Resulting Shifts In Percentile And Standard Placements After Comparison Of The Bod Pod And Dxa, Timothy Heden†, Steven Shepard†, John Smith‡, Kay Covington‡, James Lecheminant‡
International Journal of Exercise Science
The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of the BOD POD® when compared to the DXA and if placement on a percentile chart and standard table is affected by any differences between the two measures. A total of 244 (27.7 ± 10.8 yrs, 77.3 ± 16.1 kg, 171.4 ± 10.1 cm, 26.31 ± 5.42 BMI) males and females between the ages of 18 and 52 were recruited to participate in this study. The participant’s body fat percentage (%BF) was tested in random order on the BOD POD® and DXA during a 30-minute session following manufacturer’s guidelines and …
Bullying Of Middle School Students With And Without Learning Disabilities: Prevalence And Relationship To Students' Social Skills, Silvana M. Spinelli-Casale
Bullying Of Middle School Students With And Without Learning Disabilities: Prevalence And Relationship To Students' Social Skills, Silvana M. Spinelli-Casale
Open Access Dissertations
Students who experience bullying have been shown to be at greater risk for forms of maladjustment including depression and loneliness (Hawker & Boulton, 2000), and social withdrawal (Olweus, 1993). Research indicates that bullying is especially severe in middle schools (Boulton & Underwood, 1992; NCES, 2002; Olweus 1993). Students with learning disabilities (LD) are considered to be particularly at risk due to the frequent co-occurrence of poor social skills with learning disabilities (Fox & Boulton, 2005). This study examined the percentage of victims, bullies, bully-victims and non-participants in bullying as reported by a sample of 255 students (144 with LD) attending …

Designation Of Medically Underserved And Health Professional Shortage Areas: Analysis Of The Public Comments On The Withdrawn Proposed Regulation, Emily Jones, Leighton C. Ku, Joseph Lippi, Ramona Whittington, Sara J. Rosenbaum
Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative
In February 2008, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) proposed new regulations that would have modified and combined the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) and Medically Underserved Area/Population (MUA/P) designation processes. The comment period was extended twice in response to the large volume of comments, through June 30th. On July 23rd, HRSA effectively withdrew the proposed rule, announcing that in light of its preliminary review of comments, the agency had elected to develop a new proposal. This Research Brief highlights some of the salient issues surrounding the proposed rule, based on an analysis of the public comments by researchers …

Practical Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Particulate Matter Concentrations, Christopher J. Paciorek, Jeff D. Yanosky, Robin C. Puett, Francine Laden, Helen H. Suh
Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series
The last two decades have seen intense scientific and regulatory interest in the health effects of particulate matter (PM). Influential epidemiological studies that characterize chronic exposure of individuals rely on monitoring data that are sparse in space and time, so they often assign the same exposure to participants in large geographic areas and across time. We estimate monthly PM during 1988-2002 in a large spatial domain for use in studying health effects in the Nurses' Health Study. We develop a conceptually simple spatio-temporal model that uses a rich set of covariates. The model is used to estimate concentrations of PM10 …

An Olympic Evaluation, Eric Setzekorn
An Olympic Evaluation, Eric Setzekorn
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
With the Olympics already more than a week in the past, life in Beijing is slowly returning to normal. The Chinese government appears to have achieved what it wanted, producing an overwhelming show to awe foreign and domestic audiences and a clutch of gold medal winners to gloat over. The results for two of the more hidden goals of the games look mixed: promoting athletics for personal health along with national pride and using the Olympics to educate a new generation of urban Chinese as confident global citizens. And a negative legacy from 2008 looks to be the expansion of …

A Model Of Holistic Nursing As A Pathway To Nurse Self-Care, Kristin Mchale
A Model Of Holistic Nursing As A Pathway To Nurse Self-Care, Kristin Mchale
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project is to develop a model of holistic nursing practice as a pathway to nurse self-care. Specifically, this project integrates nursing theory, relevant literature, and reflection on holistic nursing practice. The significance of the project is identified as the current low priority of nurse self-care and the need for nurse self-healing- Additionally, holistic nursing, as a pathway to nurse self-care, is examined through the theoretical lens of Jean Watson. Furthermore, literature and research are examined in the areas of (t) the meaning of the holistic nursing experience, (2) self-care and complementary, alternative medicine use by nurses, …
