In the 1920's, Hoover described a sign that could be considered a marker of severe airway obstruction. While readily recognizable at the bedside, it may easily be missed on a cursory physical examination. Hoover's sign refers to the inspiratory retraction of the lower intercostal spaces that occurs with obstructive airway disease. It results from alteration in dynamics of diaphragmatic contraction due to hyperinflation, resulting in traction on the rib margins by the flattened diaphragm. The sign is reported to have a sensitivity of 58% and specificity of 86% for detection of airway obstruction. Seen in up to 70% of patients …

The integrity of the endothelial monolayer is essential to blood vessel homeostasis and active regulation of endothelial permeability. The FGF system plays important roles in a wide variety of physiologic and pathologic conditions; however, its role in the adult vasculature has not been defined. To assess the role of the FGF system in the adult endothelial monolayer, we disrupted FGF signaling in bovine aortic endothelial cells and human saphenous vein endothelial cells in vitro and in adult mouse and rat endothelial cells in vivo using soluble FGF traps or a dominant inhibitor of all FGF receptors. The inhibition of FGF …

The Voice: 2001-2011
This edition of the College of Wooster's student run newspaper was published on September 5 of 2008 and it is eight pages long. The differences between the presidential candidates--John McCain and Barack Obama--are discussed in the heading article on the first page. The most recent lecturer for the Wooster Forum Series was Jared Cohen; he spoke about Islamic youth. There is a new group on campus known as the Sexuality Support Group and the group was founded by a recent graduate. An article about the Lilly House and Project is on page four. The recent African Art acquisitions for the …

Enteric pathogens have developed several resistance mechanisms to survive the antimicrobial action of bile. We investigated the transcriptional profile of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strain C6706 under virulence gene-inducing conditions in the presence and absence of bile. Microarray analysis revealed that the expression of 119 genes was affected by bile. The mRNA levels of genes encoding proteins involved in transport were increased in the presence of bile, whereas the mRNA levels of genes encoding proteins involved in pathogenesis and chemotaxis were decreased. This study identified genes encoding transcriptional regulators from the TetR family (vexR and breR) and …

Peru: Indigenous Protests Successfully Reverse President Alan Garcia's Decrees Opening Amazon To Oil Exploitation, Notisur Writers
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
A growing number of protests against the administration of Per's President Alan Garcia led to a declaration of a state of emergency in several departments in August after indigenous groups seized petroleum and natural-gas facilities. The indigenous groups were fighting to overturn presidential decrees that would have allowed tribes to sell their lands to private interests, a measure required under the terms of the free-trade agreement (FTA) that Peru and the US ratified. The Congress ultimately overturned Garcia's decrees by an overwhelming majority, leading to the end of the indigenous protests. Nonetheless, broad popular discontent with Garcia--as demonstrated by multiple …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
The distinction of complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia from endometrial adenocarcinoma is often problematic. Foci of back-to-back arrangement of glands or foci of cribriform arrangement of glands smaller than 2.1 mm in diameter are considered insufficient for the diagnosis of endometrial adenocarcinoma by some authors, and sufficient to be diagnosed as endometrial adenocarcinoma by other authors. We refer to these foci as endometrial adenocarcinoma in situ. In this study, we evaluated findings in subsequent hysterectomy in complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia patients with and without adenocarcinoma in situ. Follow-up findings, including the presence or absence of endometrial adenocarcinoma in the hysterectomy specimen, …
