Genetic Analysis Of Hiv-1 Subtypes In Nairobi, Kenya, Suhail Khoja, Peter Ojwang, Saeed Khan, Nancy Okinda, Reena Harania, Syed Ali

Pathology, East Africa

Background: Genetic analysis of a viral infection helps in following its spread in a given population, in tracking the routes of infection and, where applicable, in vaccine design. Additionally, sequence analysis of the viral genome provides information about patterns of genetic divergence that may have occurred during viral evolution.

Objective: In this study we have analyzed the subtypes of Human Immunodeficiency Virus -1 (HIV-1) circulating in a diverse sample population of Nairobi, Kenya.

Methodology: 69 blood samples were collected from a diverse subject population attending the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. Total DNA was extracted from peripheral blood …

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying A Cellular Analog Of Operant Reward Learning, Fred D Lorenzetti, Douglas A Baxter, John H Byrne Sep 2008

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying A Cellular Analog Of Operant Reward Learning, Fred D Lorenzetti, Douglas A Baxter, John H Byrne

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Operant conditioning is a ubiquitous but mechanistically poorly understood form of associative learning in which an animal learns the consequences of its behavior. Using a single-cell analog of operant conditioning in neuron B51 of Aplysia, we examined second-messenger pathways engaged by activity and reward and how they may provide a biochemical association underlying operant learning. Conditioning was blocked by Rp-cAMP, a peptide inhibitor of PKA, a PKC inhibitor, and by expressing a dominant-negative isoform of Ca2+-dependent PKC (apl-I). Thus, both PKA and PKC were necessary for operant conditioning. Injection of cAMP into B51 mimicked the effects of operant conditioning. Activation …

Toward A Global Shareholder Society, Robert C. Hockett Sep 2008

Toward A Global Shareholder Society, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

With the American economy seemingly stalling, the global economy thereby imperiled, and another electoral campaign season well underway in the U.S., the "outsourcing" of jobs from the developed to the developing world is again on the public agenda. Latest figures indicate not only that layoffs and claims for joblessness benefits are up in the U.S., but also that the rate of American job-exportation has more than doubled since the last electoral cycle. This year's American political candidates have been quick to take note. In consequence, more than at any time since the early 1990s, continued American, and with it other …

The Anchor, Volume 122.03: September 10, 2008, Hope College

The Anchor: 2008

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The Claustrum In Autism And Typically Developing Male Children: A Quantitative Mri Study, Warren B. Davis Sep 2008

The Claustrum In Autism And Typically Developing Male Children: A Quantitative Mri Study, Warren B. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The claustrum (Cl) is a subcortical gray-matter structure housed between the external capsule medially and the extreme capsule laterally. Due to its extensive reciprocal connections throughout the brain, it has been implicated in consciousness and other higher order functions including linking behavior and emotion. Such linkage may be important in understanding the neurobiology of autism since other cortical and subcortical regions including the spatially and ontologically related basal ganglia, as well as limbic structures, have been implicated in the disorder. Participants were males with autism (n=16) and typically developing (TD; n=14) matched for head circumference and age. The Cl and …

13C-Sialic Acid Labeling Of Glycans On Glycoproteins Using St6gal-I, Megan A. Macnaughtan, Fang Tian, Shan Liu, Lu Meng, Seongha Park, Parastoo Azadi, Kelley W. Moremen, James H. Prestegard Sep 2008

13C-Sialic Acid Labeling Of Glycans On Glycoproteins Using St6gal-I, Megan A. Macnaughtan, Fang Tian, Shan Liu, Lu Meng, Seongha Park, Parastoo Azadi, Kelley W. Moremen, James H. Prestegard

Faculty Publications

Glycans that are either N-linked to asparagine or O-linked to serine or threonine are the hallmark of glycoproteins, a class of protein that dominates the mammalian proteome. These glycans perform important functions in cells and in some cases are required for protein activity. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for studying glycan structure and interactions, particularly in a form that exploits heteronuclei such as 13C. Here an approach is presented that that uses α-2,6-sialyltransferase (ST6Gal-I) to enzymatically add 13C-N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc or sialic acid) to glycoproteins after their preparation using nonbacterial hosts. ST6Gal-I is itself a glycoprotein, …
