Applications Of Operations Research In Domestic Electric Utilities, Jametta Myers Dec 2008

Applications Of Operations Research In Domestic Electric Utilities, Jametta Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Since its inception in the 1950s, operations research has been used in a number of industries, including the energy industry. Documentation of its use in exploration, production, gasoline blending, oil spill management, coal mining, coal handling, and coal mixing is extensive. However, considerably less documented research exists for one significant customer of many of these products: the electric utility. This work reviews refereed literature from United States operations research journals that document the use of operations research in United States electric utility operations. Applications that centered specifically on the areas of thermal energy generation, transmission, distribution, capacity planning, electric power …

Examining The Potential Unintended Effects Of A Healthful Living Curriculum Upon Children’S Weight-Related Beliefs, Body Satisfaction, And Body Build Stereotypes, Jennifer Paff Ogle, Jan Carroll, Brian Butki, Mary Lynn Damhorst Dec 2008

Examining The Potential Unintended Effects Of A Healthful Living Curriculum Upon Children’S Weight-Related Beliefs, Body Satisfaction, And Body Build Stereotypes, Jennifer Paff Ogle, Jan Carroll, Brian Butki, Mary Lynn Damhorst

Journal of Youth Development

This exploratory work was guided by the question of whether health education messages about food and exercise might inadvertently influence children’s beliefs about weight controllability, body satisfaction, weight self-assessments, desire to alter weight, and body build stereotypes. Participants were 80 children (38 boys, 42 girls) aged 7 to 13 years enrolled in a week-long “FunLIFE” summer camp offered at a large university. FunLIFE was created in response to the childhood obesity crisis and focuses upon Learning to Improve Fitness and Eating (thus, the acronym “LIFE”). Pre- and posttest questionnaires were administered at four camp sessions. Findings indicated that participation in …

Democratic Governance, Distributive Justice And Development, Chantal Thomas Dec 2008

Democratic Governance, Distributive Justice And Development, Chantal Thomas

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This paper explores the idea that distributive justice in the multilateral trade regime is best served, at the moment, by democratizing its governance procedures. Part I of this paper focuses on the explanatory question - from a trade and development perspective, how can we understand the breakdown in Doha negotiations? This paper draws attention to institutional dynamics exacerbating the current stalemate. In answering that question, Part I draws from two disparate methodological traditions, which can be described as "economistic" and "constructivist." Constructivist analysis suggests a focus on the discursive subtexts that constitute the identity and interests of participating states. With …

Capturing Workflow Event Data For Monitoring, Performance Analysis, And Management Of Scientific Workflows, Matthew Valerio, Satya S. Sahoo, Roger Barga, Jared Jackson

Kno.e.sis Publications

To effectively support real-time monitoring and performance analysis of scientific workflow execution, varying levels of event data must be captured and made available to interested parties. This paper discusses the creation of an ontology-aware workflow monitoring system for use in the Trident system which utilizes a distributed publish/subscribe event model. The implementation of the publish/subscribe system is discussed and performance results are presented.

Two Evolutionarily Conserved Sequence Elements For Peg3/Usp29 Transcription, Jeong Do Kim, Sungryul Yu, Jung Ha Choo, Joomyeong Kim Dec 2008

Two Evolutionarily Conserved Sequence Elements For Peg3/Usp29 Transcription, Jeong Do Kim, Sungryul Yu, Jung Ha Choo, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

Background: Two evolutionarily Conserved Sequence Elements, CSE1 and CSE2 (YY1 binding sites), are found within the 3.8-kb CpG island surrounding the bidirectional promoter of two imprinted genes, Peg3 (Paternally expressed gene 3) and Usp29 (Ubiquitin-specific protease 29). This CpG island is a likely ICR (Imprinting Control Region) that controls transcription of the 500-kb genomic region of the Peg3 imprinted domain. Results: The current study investigated the functional roles of CSE1 and CSE2 in the transcriptional control of the two genes, Peg3 and Usp29, using cell line-based promoter assays. The mutation of 6 YY1 binding sites (CSE2) reduced the transcriptional activity …
