Patterns Of Credit Card Use Among Low And Moderate Income Households, Ronald J. Mann Jan 2008

Patterns Of Credit Card Use Among Low And Moderate Income Households, Ronald J. Mann

Faculty Scholarship

This chapter uses data from the Federal Reserve Board's Survey of Consumer Finances for 2004 (the "SCF") to examine the penetration of credit cards into LMI markets. The chapter has two purposes. First, I discuss the rise of the modern credit market, emphasizing the segmentation of product lines based on behavioral and financial characteristics of customer groups. Among other things, that trend involves the use of products aimed at LMI households that differ significantly from those aimed at middle-class households. Second, I describe the extent to which LMI households borrow on credit cards, the types of LMI households that borrow, …

An Examination Of Self-Reported Parenting Practices Among First-Generation Spanish-Speaking Latino Families: A Spanish Version Of The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire, Melissa R. Donovick, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

The present study examined the applicability of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire to a Spanish-speaking Latino population. Results of the reliability and concurrent validity testing suggest that the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire may be a valuable tool for use with Spanish-speaking Latino families. The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire in Spanish assessed parenting practices among 50 first-generation Spanish-speaking Latino families of primarily Mexican origin with a child between 4 and 9 years of age (n = 96 parents, n = 50 children). Mothers and fathers completed questionnaires in Spanish to assess parent and child behaviors. Results show that over 80% of parents included …

Experimental Law And Economics, Jennifer Arlen, Eric L. Talley Jan 2008

Experimental Law And Economics, Jennifer Arlen, Eric L. Talley

Faculty Scholarship

This chapter provides a framework for assessing the contributions of experiments in Law and Economics. We identify criteria for determining the validity of an experiment and find that these criteria depend upon both the purpose of the experiment and the theory of behavior implicated by the experiment. While all experiments must satisfy the standard experimental desiderata of control, falsifiability of theory, internal consistency, external consistency and replicability, the question of whether an experiment also must be contextually attentive - in the sense of matching the real world choice being studied - depends on the underlying theory of decision-making being tested …

Efficacy Of A Direct Instruction Approach To Promote Early Learning, Jennifer Lee Salaway Jan 2008

Efficacy Of A Direct Instruction Approach To Promote Early Learning, Jennifer Lee Salaway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of Direct Instruction (DI) as an enhancement to a Developmentally Appropriate Preschool (DAP) curriculum in the form of increased pre-academic, language, and early literacy competencies for high-risk preschool children. Sixty-one preschool children were randomly assigned to either a DI-Add-On group or DAP-Only group. The children were administered the Kaufman Survey of Early Academic and Language Skills (K-SEALS; Kaufman and Kaufman, 1993) and Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS; Good and Kaminski, 2002) prior to receiving the intervention and upon completion of the study. All of the children were also administered the DIBELS throughout …

The Necessity Of Economics: The Preferential Option For The Poor, Markets, And Environmental Law, Andrew P. Morriss Jan 2008

The Necessity Of Economics: The Preferential Option For The Poor, Markets, And Environmental Law, Andrew P. Morriss

Faculty Scholarship

Markets and economic theory are often cast as the enemies of both the poor and environmental quality. This paper, part of the Peace with Creation symposium held at the St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, argues that economics provides a necessary, but not sufficient, tool to address the problems of the poor and of improving environmental quality. The paper discusses ten propositions of economic theory and explains how each applying them results in both improvements in environmental quality and in the lot of the poor. The paper then briefly examines three examples of how applying the lessons of economics …

"How Do We Make That Change?" Analysis Of Transformative Dialogue In A Community Initiative, Tanya A. Brown Jan 2008

"How Do We Make That Change?" Analysis Of Transformative Dialogue In A Community Initiative, Tanya A. Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the processes through which people are transformed in their encounters with one another and consequently moved to engage in civic action. Proponents within critical pedagogy have underscored the significance of dialogue for motivating hope, agency, and civic engagement. The importance of conceptualizing dialogue as transformative has been underscored in light of research and theories within community psychology, which have both argued for the significance of civic engagement for social change, and documented its decline in recent years. Despite this, review of literature addressing transformative learning and civic engagement point to the absence …

Federal Sentencing In 2007: The Supreme Court Holds – The Center Doesn't, Daniel C. Richman Jan 2008

Federal Sentencing In 2007: The Supreme Court Holds – The Center Doesn't, Daniel C. Richman

Faculty Scholarship

This essay takes stock of federal sentencing after 2007, the year of the periphery. On Capitol Hill, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned in the face of widespread criticism over his role in the replacement of several U.S. Attorneys. In the Supreme Court, the trio of Rita v. United States, Gall v. United States, and Kimbrough v. United States clarified and perhaps extended the breadth of license given to district judges in an advisory guideline regime. In contrast to the Supreme Court's sentencing cases, which focus on the allocation of authority between judges and juries, and the bulk of the …

Comparing The Effects Of Sung Versus Spoken Lyrics On Speech And Language Acquisition In Late-Talking Toddlers, Chelsea Ki Sook Clock Bell Jan 2008

Comparing The Effects Of Sung Versus Spoken Lyrics On Speech And Language Acquisition In Late-Talking Toddlers, Chelsea Ki Sook Clock Bell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of two intervention approaches with children who are delayed in their development of expressive language (i.e. "late talkers"). Identification and intervention for late talkers is often controversial. This study examined whether music therapy has an equal or greater effect on speech and language acquisition in two toddlers with late-developing speech and expressive language when compared to a literacy-based intervention involving storybook reading. The use of storybook reading in speech and language therapy has been examined and found successful when used with children with communication disorders. However additional research is needed …

Effects Of Orthotic Intervention During Running Among Individuals With Functional Flatfoot, E. Anne Cunningham Jan 2008

Effects Of Orthotic Intervention During Running Among Individuals With Functional Flatfoot, E. Anne Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Foot orthotics are commonly prescribed to runners with functional flatfoot (FFF) with the goal of restoring the medial arch of the foot. In addition, treadmills are typically used by both clinicians and researchers in order to measure the lower extremity kinematics associated with running. However the mechanism of orthotic intervention as well as the accuracy of treadmills in representing overground running remains controversial within the literature.

This thesis first compared the lower extremity kinematics between treadmill and overground running among individuals with a subtalar neutral foot type. The results indicated no significant differences with respect to rate of rearfoot angle, …

Non-Preferred Limb Performance Following Prolonged Training Periods: Performance And Retention Of Skills, Matthew Thomas Mayer Jan 2008

Non-Preferred Limb Performance Following Prolonged Training Periods: Performance And Retention Of Skills, Matthew Thomas Mayer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of the current study was to examine if a long-term training program could improve non-preferred limb performance on a battery of standard tasks (Annett Pegboard, Grooved Pegboard Place and Remove Phase) and non-standard tasks (Scroll Task and Line-crossing Task). Upon completion of the training sessions, two new tasks were introduced, Finger Tapping and Fitt’s Law Task, to examine if any performance improvements could be transferred. A second purpose of the study was to learn if a training program could increase the perceived comfort in using the non-preferred hand on the same testing tasks. Participants were assigned to a …

Asset-Based Community Development: A Case Study, Suzanne Killing Wood Jan 2008

Asset-Based Community Development: A Case Study, Suzanne Killing Wood

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This case describes an effort toward asset-based community development with an ‘underprivileged’ neighbourhood, including the responsive steps taken to deal with the realities and challenges of community change efforts. Through participant observation and in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including residents and external supports, this paper examines changes in community activity in association with their newly formed community centre. Through analysis of the community’s challenges four ‘enabling conditions’ necessary for community development are identified including: balancing relationships with issues; effective ‘citizen space’; maintenance of relationships and communication; and community readiness. These key lessons include ongoing considerations of patience, flexibility, and responsiveness …

In Search Of The Political Economy Of Oppression And Liberation: Towards Structural Validity For Community Psychology, Sune Sandbeck Jan 2008

In Search Of The Political Economy Of Oppression And Liberation: Towards Structural Validity For Community Psychology, Sune Sandbeck

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Advocating for liberation from oppression through critical research and praxis has become a central concern among community psychologists. In this dissertation, I argue that while community psychology (CP) has had some success in integrating multidisciplinary knowledge, its understanding of oppression and liberation continues to be characterized by an avoidance of economic considerations. I posit the concept of structural validity as being necessary to re-focus our research and praxis on the economic structure of oppression. Within the current global context of systemic inequality, this economic structure is being ideologically driven by the doctrine and discourse of neoliberalism, which has important implications …

Adult Complicity In The Dis-Education Of The Black Male High School Athlete & Societal Failures To Remedy His Plight, Kimberly Jade Norwood Jan 2008

Adult Complicity In The Dis-Education Of The Black Male High School Athlete & Societal Failures To Remedy His Plight, Kimberly Jade Norwood

Scholarship@WashULaw

This Article focuses on the educational hurdles facing many Black male student athletes in urban high schools. Academic rigor is rarely expected of these students. They are part of an active form of dis-education. By dis-education, I mean the active failure to educate. Our learning institutions have become so accustomed to excusing these students from academic rigor that doing so simply does not spark a sense of outrage or any notion that we are doing something wrong when it comes to our expectations of these students. No one really questions them when they do poorly on class work and tests. …

Relational Duties, Regulatory Duties, And The Widening Gap Between Individual Health Law And Collective Health Policy, William M. Sage Jan 2008

Relational Duties, Regulatory Duties, And The Widening Gap Between Individual Health Law And Collective Health Policy, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

In response to a prominent editorial by Dr. Jeffrey M. Drazen, Professor Sage explains how a relational approach has impeded health law's ability to effectively govern the American health care system, arguing that health law has traditionally focused on the physician-patient encounter rather than on achieving collective objectives (which he calls regulatory duties). Professor Sage traces health law's relational emphasis to private and public law, professional ethics and bioethics, budgetary and general politics, and health care consumerism. He concludes that four areas of health policy-conflicts of interest in biomedical research, managed care and pay-for-performance, health care transparency and education, and …

Procedural Path Dependence: Discrimination And The Civil-Criminal Divide, Julie C. Suk Jan 2008

Procedural Path Dependence: Discrimination And The Civil-Criminal Divide, Julie C. Suk

Articles

Procedural path dependence occurs when the particular features of the procedural system that is charged with enforcing a given legal norm determine the substantive path of that norm. This Article shows how the limits of employment discrimination law in two different national contexts can be explained by procedural dynamics. In France, as in several European countries, employment discrimination law is enforced predominantly in criminal proceedings. French criminal procedure enables the discovery of information necessary to prove the facts of discrimination, whereas the limits of French civil procedure make it impossible for such information to be revealed. As a result, the …

Evaluating The Effects Of A Trust-Building Intervention On Employee Trust, Travis O. Davidson Jan 2008

Evaluating The Effects Of A Trust-Building Intervention On Employee Trust, Travis O. Davidson

Theses and Dissertations

This quasiexperimental study investigated the effects a trust-building intervention had on employee trust specifically in such areas as transparency, responsiveness, understanding and caring, sincerity, and trustworthiness. Specifically, this study addressed the research questions about whether a trust-building intervention with supervisors led to improved working relationships with nonmanagement employees and whether improvements in the working relationships persisted and remained detectable for 6 weeks following the intervention.

Preintervention and postintervention questionnaires were administered to nonmanagement experimental and control groups to measure the dimensions of transparency, responsiveness, understanding and caring, sincerity, and trustworthiness. The results indicated that the trust-building intervention had a positive …

Social Impact: Green Dream: Environmental Justice Is Emerging From The Shadows., Rick Skwiot Jan 2008

Social Impact: Green Dream: Environmental Justice Is Emerging From The Shadows., Rick Skwiot

Social Impact Publication

"We have been slow to engage as a profession," Rogge says of social work's inclusion of the natural environment in research, teaching, and practice—a criticism shared by others interviewed here. She knows of no existing specialization or concentration in the United States or Canada for environmental social work or social work in natural environment, as she prefers to call it. But indicators suggest that may soon change.
