Thresholds And Tolerance Of Physical Pain Among Young Adults Who Engage In Self-Injury, Katrina Mccoy
Thresholds And Tolerance Of Physical Pain Among Young Adults Who Engage In Self-Injury, Katrina Mccoy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Prevalence rates of non-suicidal self-injury among college students ranges from 17% to 38%. Research indicates that individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who self-injure sometimes report an absence of pain during self-injury. Furthermore, self-injury in the absence of pain has been associated with more frequent suicide attempts. The present study examined pain thresholds and tolerance among 44 college students (11 self-injurious and 33 non-self-injurious). Pain thresholds and tolerance were measured using an algometer pressure device which has been used to produce pain previous laboratory research. Self-injurious participants had higher pain tolerances than those who do not engage in self-injury. In …
*Validation Of The Assessment Of Depression Inventory (Adi) Feigning Scale And Clinical, Demographic, And Criminal Profile Differences Between Probable Malingerers And Psychiatric Inpatients, Julia Marie Messer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using archival data, "gold standard" assessment measures were used to determine group placement of psychiatric inpatients. One of two multi-scale measures of personality, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory II (MMPI-2) or the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), were administered, as well as one of two interview measures designed specifically to assess for malingering, the Structured Interview of Reported Symptoms (SIRS) and/or the Miller Forensic Assessment of Symptoms Test (M-FAST). Based on either the MMPI-2 or the PAI and the SIRS, subjects were placed into one of three groups: non-malingering inpatients, probable malingerers, and indeterminate malingerers. One purpose of identifying these groups …

Essays On Remote Monitoring As An Emerging Tool For Centralized Management Of Decentralized Wastewater Systems, Clement Solomon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to the United States Environmental Protections Agency (USEPA), nearly one in four households in the United States depends on an individual septic system (commonly referred as an onsite system or a decentralized wastewater system) to treat and disperse wastewater. More than half of these systems are over 30 years old, and surveys indicate at least 10 to 20% might not be functioning properly. The USEPA concluded in its 1997 report to Congress that adequately managed decentralized wastewater systems (DWS) are a cost-effective and long-term option for meeting public health and water quality goals, particularly in less densely populated areas.;The …
Slow-To-Warm-Up Temperament In Infancy As A Predictor Of Concurrent And Later Child And Maternal Behaviors, Jessica B. Stoltzfus
Slow-To-Warm-Up Temperament In Infancy As A Predictor Of Concurrent And Later Child And Maternal Behaviors, Jessica B. Stoltzfus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Little is known about the slow-to-warm-up infant temperament. The present study evaluated the usefulness of this temperament as conceptualized by Thomas and Chess in predicting child and maternal parenting behaviors, with a particular focus on its conceptual link to child inhibition. Participants were 1,072 mothers and their children in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care. Slow-to-warm-up temperament in infancy did predict later inhibition, p = .000, but not as well as the difficult temperament or the individual temperament subscales of mood and approach. Including maternal sensitivity and stimulation and support increased the prediction of inhibition from the slow-to-warm-up temperament …
Development And Validation Of A Diabetes-Specific Health State Classification System And Valuation Function Based On The Multi-Attribute Theory, Murali Sundaram
Development And Validation Of A Diabetes-Specific Health State Classification System And Valuation Function Based On The Multi-Attribute Theory, Murali Sundaram
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Preference-Based Measures of Health (PBMH) provide 'preference' or 'utility' weights that enable the calculation of quality-adjusted life years for the economic evaluations of interventions. The Diabetes Utility Index (DUI) was developed as a two-page, self-administered diabetes-specific PBMH that can replace expensive time-consuming interviews with patients to estimate their health state utilities. Inputs from theory, an existing diabetes-specific measure of quality of life, and statistical analyses were submitted to a clinical expert panel. After three rounds of pilot surveys (n1=52, n2=65, n3=111) at primary care clinics in Morgantown, WV, five attributes and severity categories for each attribute were finalized on the …

Rates Of Swim Bladder Parasite Infection And Pit Tag Retention In Upstream Migrant American Eels Of The Upper Potomac River Drainage, Jennifer L. Zimmerman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis involved two components: identification of the parasite Anguillicola crassus in American eels, Anguilla rostrata and PIT tag retention in eels in a laboratory setting. The recent spread of the swim bladder nematode parasite, Anguillicola crassus, in American eels has caused concern among biologists and fishery managers. A total of 244 yellow-phase American eels were collected at the Millville Dam eel ladder on the Shenandoah River, WV. Swim bladders were removed and examined for the presence of the nematode parasite. The number of parasites in each eel was recorded, and prevalence, intensity, and mean intensity were calculated. A swim …
Retail Investor Remedies Under Rule 10b-5, O'Hare Jennifer
Retail Investor Remedies Under Rule 10b-5, O'Hare Jennifer
Faculty Publications
This paper assesses the private remedies available under Rule 10b-5 to retail investors who have been defrauded by false corporate disclosures. After comparing the treatment received by retail investors to the treatment received by institutional investors, I identify several areas in which the federal securities laws disfavor retail investors who have been defrauded by false corporate disclosures, including the creation of a two-tiered system of investor remedies for securities fraud. Institutional investors are permitted to pick and choose which law and forum offers them the most attractive chance for recovery, but retail investors typically do not have this opportunity. They …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Motor proteins and filaments are essential elements in living cells. They are employed in skeletal muscles to generate forces, they transport cargos such as organelles to specific locations in the cells or they reorganize themselves to change a cell's structure. Moreover, motor proteins and filaments use hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as chemical fuel to generate mechanical movement in their interaction. Understanding the behavior of these enticed nano-sized machines and their properties, yet to be mimicked and synthesized by humans is very important to the future development of transport in nanoscale. Thus far, researchers succeeded in demonstrating the interaction of …
Where Does Conflict Management Fit In The System's Leadership Puzzle?, Vickie S. Cook, Linda Johnston
Where Does Conflict Management Fit In The System's Leadership Puzzle?, Vickie S. Cook, Linda Johnston
Faculty Articles
Superintendents are faced with conflicts every day. The conflicts arise around issues of personnel, community roles, funding, politics, and work/life balance. Good leadership involves an understanding of how to deal with conflict, whom to involve in the conflict resolution, how to set up structures and processes that ensure conflict doesn't reoccur, and the ability to use conflict in a positive manner. Superintendents look to current literature to assist with the development of positive conflict resolution skills. These skills are not only preferable for current superintendents, but necessary for positive career development of future superintendents. Several authors have examined the various …

Energy Harvesting Using Piezoelectric Materials And High Voltage Scavenging Circuitry, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Keith Corzine
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Piezoelectric transducers are increasingly being used to harvest energy from environmental vibrations in order to power remote sensors or to charge batteries that power the sensors. In this paper, two modifications have been analyzed and tested to increase the harvested electrical power from a vibrating piezoelectric material. First, the voltage inversion method, which has recently been used in piezoelectricbased energy harvesting, and that shapes the voltage to be in phase with current in order to increase the harvested power is reviewed. By injecting additional current, a new voltage inversion scheme, referred as voltage compensation scheme, is introduced. This new scheme …

Engaging With Images And Stories : Using A Learning Approach To Develop Agency Of Beginning "At-Risk" Pre-Service Teachers, Karen Noble, Robyn Henderson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
At a regional Australian university, a Learning Circle approach was implemented with a small group of first year education students who identified themselves as “at risk” of failure in the tertiary context. As part of their participation in weekly meetings, the students engaged in discussion, reflection and problem-solving related to their transition to university study. They also participated in a visual research inquiry which included the construction of photographic images and research conversations about being university students and dealing with study demands. Through the privileging of interactions and relationships, the students were able to make connections to other Discourses from …

Research outputs pre 2011
Research Need and Objective :
Many sections of the northern WA coastline have become heavily industrialised in the last three decades particularly throughout the Pilbara region where offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration and processing facilities are abundant. There have been recent moves to develop similar industry along the Kimberley coast to access the Browse Basin, a 140,000 Km2 offshore gas field approximately 300km off the Kimberley Coast. This has resulted in extensive debate and the need to define the natural values of this region, which is considered to be one of the world’s most ecologically diverse (WWF 2008). …

Organisational Survey: Impact Of Healthway Funding On Currently Funded And Previously Funded Sar Organisations, Michael Rosenberg, Sarah French, Jenna Mitchell, Christina Mills, Lisa Wood
Research outputs pre 2011
Since 1992, organisations in receipt of Healthway funding have demonstrated consistently high levels of commitment to sponsorship requirements. In part, the high levels of commitment observed may reflect a trend towards organisations with similar values to Healthway applying for funding. Organisations with different values to Healthway may receive funding once and decide that the sponsorship does riot match the needs of their organisation. This may result in difficulties fo.r Healthway to access hard to reach organisations, or to establish longer-term partnerships with Sports, Arts or Racing (SAR) organisations that target high priority groups. To better understand how Healthway's requirements of …

Groundwater quality was monitored in four Spanish caves using concentrations of nitrate, potassium, phosphorus and in some cases total organic carbon. Three of the caves are located in NW Spain and contain prehistoric cave paintings and hence have special conservation interest. Of these, two are open show caves (Tito Bustillo and Pindal Caves), while the other one (Herrerías Cave) is not managed for tours and is partially closed off to public access. The fourth cave (Las Maravillas Cave) is located in SW Spain and is opened to the public because of its geological features and natural beauty. In this paper, …

An Investigation Of Meromixis In Cave Pools, Lechuguilla Cave, New Mexico, David B. Levy
International Journal of Speleology
Chemical characteristics of permanent stratification in cave pools (meromixis) may provide insight into the geochemical origin and evolution of cave pool waters. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that some pools in Lechuguilla Cave may be subject to ectogenic meromixis, where permanent chemical stratification is induced by input of relatively saline or fresh water from an external source. However, because organic C concentrations in Lechuguilla waters are low (typically < 1 mg L-1), biogenic meromixis resulting in O2(g)-depleted subsurface waters is not expected. Four pools at various depths below ground surface (0 m) were studied: (1) …
