Today the Earth faces an extinction event on a scale second only to Earth's largest mass extinction, the Permian-Triassic event, which occurred 250 million years ago. Upwards of 70 percent of the Earth's species could be at risk of extinction with a 3.5°C (6.3°F) rise in temperature, which could occur by the end of this century.

The driver is global warming, caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. As such, a rational climate policy is needed immediately to prevent the complete collapse of biodiversity. Yet, the United States—the world's largest cumulative contributor to emissions—is in a state of paralysis when it …

Evolutionary Origins, Diversification, And Biogeography Of Liver Flukes (Digenea, Fasciolidae), Wael M. Lotfy, Sara V. Brant, Randy J. Dejong, Hoa Le Thanh Jan 2008

Evolutionary Origins, Diversification, And Biogeography Of Liver Flukes (Digenea, Fasciolidae), Wael M. Lotfy, Sara V. Brant, Randy J. Dejong, Hoa Le Thanh

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Fasciolid flukes are among the largest and best known digenetic trematodes and have considerable historical and veterinary significance. Fasciola hepatica is commonly implicated in causing disease in humans. The origins, patterns of diversification, and biogeography of fasciolids are all poorly known. We have undertaken a molecular phylogenetic study using 28S, internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA, and mitochondrial nicotinamide dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) that included seven of the nine recognized species in the family. The fasciolids examined comprise a monophyletic group with the most basal species recovered from African elephants. We hypothesize fasciolids …

The Effect Of Selective Cholinergic Lesion Of Medial Septum On Recognition Memory, Li Cai Jan 2008

The Effect Of Selective Cholinergic Lesion Of Medial Septum On Recognition Memory, Li Cai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to clarify the role of septal-hippocampal cholinergic neurons in object and spatial recognition memory. Stereotaxic-surgical infusion of the selective cholinergic neurotoxin, 192IgG-saporin (SAP), into the medial septum (MS) of Sprague-Dawley rats was utilized to establish an animal model of cholinergic deficit of the septal-hippocampal tract, which had been expected as a pathologic model of memory impairment for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Three types of recognition memory were examined: retrograde object recognition, anterograde object recognition, and anterograde spatial recognition. These were examined with a modified version of a standard object recognition paradigm. For retrograde memory retention …

The Federal Marriage Amendment And The False Promise Of Originalism, Thomas Colby Jan 2008

The Federal Marriage Amendment And The False Promise Of Originalism, Thomas Colby

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article approaches the originalism debate from a new angle - through the lens of the recently defeated Federal Marriage Amendment. There was profound and very public disagreement about the meaning of the FMA - in particular about the effect that it would have had on civil unions. The inescapable conclusion is that there was no original public meaning of the FMA with respect to the civil unions question. This suggests that often the problem with originalism is not just that the original public meaning of centuries-old provisions of the Constitution is hard to find (especially by judges untrained in …

Effectiveness Of Government Interventions At Inducing Better Environmental Performance: Does Effectiveness Depend On Facility Or Firm Features?, Robert L. Glicksman, Dietrich Earnhart Jan 2008

Effectiveness Of Government Interventions At Inducing Better Environmental Performance: Does Effectiveness Depend On Facility Or Firm Features?, Robert L. Glicksman, Dietrich Earnhart

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Environmental agencies have several options for dealing with alleged noncompliance with environmental regulations. These options include pursuit of administrative or judicial civil penalties and injunctions to prevent future violations. Scholars have begun exploring whether these options induce better performance by regulated entities. This Article addresses a largely neglected question: whether a regulated facility's characteristics affect the efficacy of the different enforcement options. The Article stems from a study of compliance by the chemical industry with federal Clean Water Act permits. It assesses whether facility characteristics, including effluent limit level and type, permit modifications, facility size, capacity utilization, discharge volatility, and …

Sustainable Federal Land Management: Protecting Ecological Integrity And Preserving Environmental Principal, Robert L. Glicksman Jan 2008

Sustainable Federal Land Management: Protecting Ecological Integrity And Preserving Environmental Principal, Robert L. Glicksman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article explores the application of the principles of sustainability to management of lands and resources under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. These two agencies operate a mandate to manage the resources under their control to achieve sustained yield. In this context, sustainability has operated to date primarily in an aspirational fashion, as a broad objective of public land management, rather than as a useful management tool or an enforceable constraint on agency management discretion. The article urges the adoption of amendments to the laws under which the Forest Service and the …

The Gay Panic Defense, Cynthia Lee Jan 2008

The Gay Panic Defense, Cynthia Lee

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this article, I examine the use of gay panic defense strategies in the criminal courtroom. I argue that such strategies are problematic because they reinforce and promote negative stereotypes about gay men as sexual deviants and sexual predators. Gay panic defense strategies are also troubling because they seek to capitalize on unconscious bias in favor of heterosexuality which is prevalent in today's heterocentric society. Most critics of the gay panic defense have proposed that judges or legislatures should bar gay panic arguments from the criminal courtroom. I take a contrary position and argue that banning gay panic arguments from …

Understanding Privacy (Chapter One), Daniel J. Solove Jan 2008

Understanding Privacy (Chapter One), Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Privacy is one of the most important concepts of our time, yet it is also one of the most elusive. As rapidly changing technology makes information increasingly available, scholars, activists, and policymakers have struggled to define privacy, with many conceding that the task is virtually impossible.

In UNDERSTANDING PRIVACY (Harvard University Press, May 2008), Professor Daniel J. Solove offers a comprehensive overview of the difficulties involved in discussions of privacy and ultimately provides a provocative resolution. He argues that no single definition can be workable, but rather that there are multiple forms of privacy, related to one another by family …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this research smoking and canning techniques were applied to cultured mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis, L.) from the Çanakkkale Strait in Eceabat, Turkey. Mussels that were smoked by liquid and traditional methods were canned in different sauces. The chemical composition and amino acid composition of the canned smoked mussels were determined by the results of laboratory analyses. As a result of smoking and canning mussels, a food with high nutritional value was obtained. It was determined that the heat applied to the product during smoking and canning did not effect amino acid composition negatively and that if any losses occur, they …

Epidemiology Of Tropical Theileriosis In The Cappadocia Region, Abdullah İnci̇, Anil İça, Alparslan Yildirim, Zati̇ Vatansever, Ayşe Çakmak, Hasan Albasan, Yücel Çam, Ayhan Atasever, Önder Düzlü

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 554 cattle from the Cappadocia region were divided into 5 different groups according to vaccination and were examined for Theileria annulata by microscope and indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT). The sampled cattle were checked for tick infestation. The prevalence of T. annulata was 60.5% by microscopic examination and 67.5% by IFAT. According to the microscopic examination, the prevalence of T. annulata was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the unvaccinated group. The seropositivity according to IFAT was significantly (P < 0.001) lower in the unvaccinated group. The morbidity was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the unvaccinated, semi-grazed, pure breed, and >2 years age groups. The mortality was significantly higher in the unvaccinated (P < 0.001), semi-grazed (P < 0.05), pure breed (P < 0.05), and female (P < 0.001) groups. A total of 1585 tick specimens belonging to the genera Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Dermacentor, Boophilus, and Ornithodorus were detected in 21.48% of examined cattle. The developing forms of T. annulata were determined in the H. anatolicum anatolicum ticks microscopically. Out of 554 cattle, 156 (27.61%) were diagnosed with acute tropical theileriosis. Out of these 156 cattle, 86 (56.21%) died due to the disease.

Uterine And Ovarian Metastasis Of Transmissible Venereal Tumor In A Bitch, Ayhan Baştan, Duygu Baki̇ Acar, Mehmet Cengi̇z

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this case report, metastasis of a transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) to the uterus and ovaries is presented. A 7-year-old female boxer dog with hemorrhagic vulvar discharge and a vaginal mass was brought to Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Clinics of Gynecology and Obstetrics. TVT was diagnosed by clinical findings and cytologic examination. Multifocal nodules in the uterus and enlargements of the uterine wall were detected by ultrasonographic examination. Ovariohysterectomy was performed because of uterine pathology. Histopathologic examination of the uterus and ovarium showed that the multifocal masses in the uterus and ovaries originated from vaginal TVT.
