Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For Teaching Linguistically And Culturally Diverse Learners In Rural Eastern North Carolina, Debra D. O'Neal, Marjorie Ringler, Diane Rodriguez
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For Teaching Linguistically And Culturally Diverse Learners In Rural Eastern North Carolina, Debra D. O'Neal, Marjorie Ringler, Diane Rodriguez
The Rural Educator
The number of English language learners (ELL) students in the US is increasing dramatically. The growth is even more evident in rural areas of the United States such as North Carolina where teachers are facing classrooms with a majority of second language learners. The authors conducted a study interviewing 24 teachers at a rural elementary school in eastern North Carolina. Teachers were interviewed regarding their perceptions of their preparedness to teach English language learners in the mainstream classrooms. Findings revealed that teacher training programs have not prepared these individuals for the student population they face today regardless of the year …
The Effect Of Knowledge And Attitudes Of Emergency Contraception On Its Use In Undergraduate Students, Amanda Marie Waldrup
The Effect Of Knowledge And Attitudes Of Emergency Contraception On Its Use In Undergraduate Students, Amanda Marie Waldrup
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A web-based cross sectional analysis utilizing the Spearman Coefficient was used to examine the relationship between 341 college students’ knowledge and attitudes toward emergency contraception. Personal characteristics and background factors such as age, race, gender, past and current use of contraception, past unintended pregnancies, and type of sex education in high school were compared to current knowledge levels and attitudes as related to use among college students. Results indicated that general knowledge is high, but detailed knowledge is lacking. Confusion between emergency contraception and RU-486 exist, which could lead to concerned attitudes ultimately effecting use. Most high schools that offer …

CityLand - 2008
The November 2008 issue of CityLand reports on major land use and preservation developments in New York City. The City Council modified the Dutch Kills rezoning to increase FAR and address hotel development concerns, approved the creation of the Special St. George District in Staten Island, and passed legislation requiring waterfront planning updates every ten years. The Council also approved the Hospital for Special Surgery’s expansion over the FDR Drive and extended the West Chelsea Historic District. The City Planning Commission approved modified plans for Willets Point and Hunter’s Point South, and reduced building heights and densities in the 125th …

Adolescents And Teachers As Partners In A School-Based Research Project To Increase Physical Activity Opportunities In A Rural Community, James Rye, Nancy O'Hara Tompkins, Darlene Mcclure, Jacqueline Aleshire
The Rural Educator
Schools are an important resource in combating the physical inactivity and obesity epidemics in rural economically depressed areas. Through a University-community partnership, teachers and adolescents in a rural West Virginia county with one of the highest obesity rates in the state developed a school-based research intervention to increase physical activity opportunities. The intervention included walking routes, educational sessions, and pedometers. A survey about barriers to physical activity revealed that “lack of willpower” was a barrier of concern among program participants (mostly school employees) and had a statistically significant (p = .0033) pre to post mean score decrease during the year …

α-Synuclein (α-syn), a protein of unknown function, is the most abundant protein in Lewy bodies, the histological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). In yeast α-syn inhibits endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-to-Golgi (ER→Golgi) vesicle trafficking, which is rescued by overexpression of a Rab GTPase that regulates ER→Golgi trafficking. The homologous Rab1 rescues α-syn toxicity in dopaminergic neuronal models of PD. Here we investigate this conserved feature of α-syn pathobiology. In a cell-free system with purified transport factors α-syn inhibited ER→Golgi trafficking in an α-syn dose-dependent manner. Vesicles budded efficiently from the ER, but their docking or fusion to Golgi membranes was inhibited. Thus, …

In Defense Of The Control Principle, Tyler Paytas
In Defense Of The Control Principle, Tyler Paytas
Theses
The problem of moral luck arises out of a tension between our intuitions and our everyday practices. Many of us share the intuition that morality is immune to luck. However, there are many cases in which we seem to rightly blame one person more than another even though the only relevant difference between the two is due to factors beyond their control. Most philosophers who have written about moral luck fall into one of two categories: those who affirm moral luck and those who affirm the control principle. Those who affirm the existence of moral luck generally believe that an …

Pacemaker Patients' Perception Of Unsafe Activities: A Survey, Masooma Aqeel, Azam Shafquat, Nawal Salahuddin
Section of Cardiology
Background: Cardiac pacing is a recognized and widely used treatment for Patients presenting with bradycardia. Physicians expect Patients to return to normal activities almost immediately post implantation. However, Patients themselves may perceive interference to pacemaker function by various routine activities and devices, and hence continue to lead restricted, disabled lives. The aim of this study is to determine if routine activities are perceived by pacemaker Patients to interfere with their device function. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was carried out on consecutive Patients at the pacemaker clinic at a public hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. A 47-question tool was developed …
