Architectural Strategies In Reducing Heat Gain In The Sub-Tropical Urban Heat Island, Mark A. Blazer Nov 2008

Architectural Strategies In Reducing Heat Gain In The Sub-Tropical Urban Heat Island, Mark A. Blazer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most scientists agree that the earth's temperature continues to rise. The heat gain is more pronounced in urban areas due to a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect. The urban heat island effect is a seemingly inevitable result of urban development, which has far reaching consequences. With energy costs skyrocketing and the destruction of the environment at risk, urban structures and buildings must do more to make our urban settings more environmentally friendly.

So far, there are two well known ways to combat these effects. First, the heat island can be slightly be negated by adding well-watered vegetation …

An Address, Not A Room Number: An Assisted Living Community Within A Community, Gregory J. Novotnak Nov 2008

An Address, Not A Room Number: An Assisted Living Community Within A Community, Gregory J. Novotnak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the son of parents of the "baby boomer" generation I foresee the immanent increased demand for assisted living for the elderly. By 2030 an estimated 20 percent - one in five Americans - will be 65 or older. Unless attention is paid now to advancing the designs and opportunities for assisted-living, there will either be a distinct lack of available options, or worse, the continuation of out-dated designs that simply will not be a marketable.

Contemporary thinking with regard to the design of places of residence for the elderly has changed dramatically from the days of outdated structures and …

A Translational Intervention For Reducing Infant Mortality In Mississippi: A Move To Eliminate Health Disparities, Marcia Rachel Ph.D., Laura Tucker Msn, Juanita Graham Msn

Journal of Health Ethics

Therapeutic, technological, and medical advances have contributed to improve Infant Mortality Rates in the United States over the last 100 years. However, there are still geographical and racial disparities and challenges, and infant mortality remains higher in the Unites States than in many other developed countries. A formal death review process can identify causal, contributory and potentiating factors related to infant deaths. This article describes use of the PDSA Model for Improvement to develop a strategy for change that will result in reducing the Infant Mortality Rate within an organization.

The purpose of this analysis is to examine specific segments of healthcare policy and practice, applying various ethical perspectives. We examine the economic and political influences that surround ethical behavior in health services, as well as how practitioners, patients, and families respond and act as a result of such influences. We then delve into the fundamental principles that guide ethical behavior by medical practitioners, including the Hippocratic Oath and vows of medical professionalism. Further, we analyze disparities in healthcare provisions based on gender, race, and ethnicity. Ethical theory is weaved into each of these sections, as the philosophical and ethical …

Is Bioethics A Profession?, Craig M. Klugman Ph.D. Nov 2008

Is Bioethics A Profession?, Craig M. Klugman Ph.D.

Journal of Health Ethics

The development of an occupation into a profession is an historical process that concerns power, jurisdiction, social contracts, and economic interests. Sociological theories of professionalization view these developments through perspectives of superior work, pay for performance, historical processes, jurisdictional disputes, struggles of social and economic power, and virtues. This essay explores these theories and examines the field of bioethics through each of these lenses looking at such issues amateur versus professional, education, professional organizations, specialized knowledge, code of ethics, jurisdiction, work sites, work focus, research, socialization, professional autonomy, licensure, legislation, and prestige. Bioethics is seen as falling in the middle …

Ethics Analysis Of The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Debate, Lori Khan Ms, Dpt Nov 2008

Ethics Analysis Of The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Debate, Lori Khan Ms, Dpt

Journal of Health Ethics

Controversy regarding Human embryonic Stem Cell (hESC) research is evident in the medical and scientific community, legislative, judicial, and executive branches of the government, private companies, religious affiliations, special interest groups, and among the general American public. Stem cells are derived from adult stem cell resources, which are termed non-embryonic or from the cells of immature blastocysts termed embryonic stem cells. Non-embryonic cells do not have the ability to differentiate into other specialized tissues, whereas embryonic cells are capable of differentiating into almost any type of tissue. hESC research, which is the focus of this paper, includes the direct creation …
