Evolution Of Picornaviruses: Impacts Of Recombination And Selection, Nicole Noel Lewis-Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

Picornaviruses are responsible for some of the most common and debilitating diseases affecting humans and animals worldwide. The objectives of this dissertation research were (1) estimate phylogenetic relationships among 11 picornavirus genera and within three species: foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV: Aphthovirus) which afflicts cloven-hoofed animals and human rhinovirus A and B (HRV: Enterovirus) which cause the common cold; (2) better understand the impact recombination has on genomic organization and evolution; (3) characterize where positive and purifying selection has occurred in proteins and how selection has influenced phenotype. The dissertation includes four studies. The first chapter provides an overview of the …

Hair, Feces And Breath Isotope Fractionation In Alpacas (Llama Pacos), Llamas (Llama Glama) And Guanacos (Llama Guanacoe) From Bolivia And Chile, Lino Constancio Lopez Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to determinate carbon and nitrogen isotope fractionation in Bolivian and Chilean alpaca, llama and guanaco, hair, breath, plasma and feces. We also wanted to determine forage selection for these camelids using stable isotope technology. From the data, niche feeding and diet selection habits will determinate based on fecal composition. Bolivian sites were located near the high snow Altiplano Mountains at Tomarapi, Sajama, and at the Technical University Oruro's research center at Condoriri, Bolivia. Chilean samples were collected at INIA's (Instituto Nacional de Investigacion Agropecuaria) Kampenaike Research Station, Punta Arenas, Chile. Bolivian alpacas and llamas were 3 …

No doubt exists that the drama/farce Ally McBeal, which ran on the Fox Television Network from 1997 to 2002, was a phenomenal success, at least during its middle years (1998-1999). It sparked numerous fan websites in several countries including one devoted to "fan fiction" (a genre in which devotees of a television series or film try their hands at writing scripts), various product spinoffs, a series spinoff (Ally, a thirty minute version that featured only vignettes, no legal drama) and even a Time magazine article that seriously considered whether Ally represents "the end of feminism." Years after the show went …

In Vivo Trafficking Of Endogenous Opioid Receptors, Yulin Wang, Elisabeth J. Van Bockstaele, Lee-Yuan Liu-Chen Nov 2008

In Vivo Trafficking Of Endogenous Opioid Receptors, Yulin Wang, Elisabeth J. Van Bockstaele, Lee-Yuan Liu-Chen

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Studies on trafficking of endogenous opioid receptors in vivo are subject of the present review. In many of the in vivo studies, the use of semi-quantitative immuno-electron microscopy is the approach of choice. Endogenous opioid receptors display differential subcellular distributions with μ opioid receptor (MOPR) being mostly present on the plasma membrane and δ- and κ-opioid receptors (DOPR and KOPR, respectively) having a significant intracellular pool. Etorphine and DAMGO cause endocytosis of the MOPR, but morphine does not, except in some dendrites. Interestingly, chronic inflammatory pain and morphine treatment promote trafficking of intracellular DOPR to the cell surface which may …

Redefining What Is Sacred, Sarah A. Sisson Nov 2008

Redefining What Is Sacred, Sarah A. Sisson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the last twenty years, Evangelical Protestants, primarily in the southeastern United States, transformed the functions of their churches from a traditional sacred gathering space to an open outreach resource for the community. Architectural form did not follow these new functions and the complexity of their modern spatial usage has never been resolved. Modern typologies, such as the mega-center or its smaller counter-part the metal building chapel, ignore their responsibility to the community as a symbolic presence.

Protestant churches began community outreach programming like life wellness series and youth enrichment programs. Once viewed as secular, these programs increased accessibility of …

Ecological Impacts Of Replacing Traditional Roofs With Green Roofs In Two Urban Areas, Tim Carter, Colleen Butler Nov 2008

Ecological Impacts Of Replacing Traditional Roofs With Green Roofs In Two Urban Areas, Tim Carter, Colleen Butler

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban land cover is dominated by impervious surface that degrades both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems relative to predevelopment conditions. There are significant opportunities for designers of urban landscapes to use alternative land covers that have multiple functions, benefiting both human and nonhuman components of the urban ecosystem. Vegetated (green) roofs are one form of alternative land cover that has shown the potential to provide a variety of ecological benefits in urban areas. We evaluated how stormwater retention, building energy and temperature, and rooftop habitat are influenced by the use of green roofs using test plots in Georgia and Massachusetts. Green …

Disproportionality As A Framework To Target Pollution Reduction From Urban Landscapes, Lawrence A. Baker, Bruce Wilson, David Fulton, Brian Horgan Nov 2008

Disproportionality As A Framework To Target Pollution Reduction From Urban Landscapes, Lawrence A. Baker, Bruce Wilson, David Fulton, Brian Horgan

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

New federal water quality regulations regarding impaired waters and urban stormwater alongside a growing need to reverse eutrophication of urban lakes are creating demand to decrease nutrient export from urban landscapes, particularly lawns. We propose that Nowak’s disproportionality framework could be used to target specific households likely to generate disproportionate levels of nutrient export. The biophysical dimension would be based on landscape vulnerability (slope; soil type; proximity to lakes); the social dimension would target “inappropriate” lawn management behaviors leading to high nutrient export on these vulnerable landscapes. Understanding of lawn nutrient cycling (biophysical dimension) and homeowner beliefs and attitudes (social …

Landscape Sustainability In A Sonoran Desert City, Chris A. Martin Nov 2008

Landscape Sustainability In A Sonoran Desert City, Chris A. Martin

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The objective of this paper is to discuss concepts of landscape sustainability in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Phoenix is situated in the greater Salt River Valley of the lower Sonoran Desert in the southwest United States. In this paper I use the ecological frameworks of ecosystem services and resiliency as a metric for understanding landscape sustainability. An assessment of landscape sustainability performance benchmarks were made by surveying research findings of scientists affiliated with the Central Arizona Phoenix Long Term Ecological Research Project (CAP LTER). In Phoenix, present day emphases on cultural, aesthetic, and habitat formation ecosystem services within an arid …

Urban Principles For Ecological Landscape Design And Maintenance: Scientific Fundamentals, Mary L. Cadenasso, Steward T. A. Pickett Nov 2008

Urban Principles For Ecological Landscape Design And Maintenance: Scientific Fundamentals, Mary L. Cadenasso, Steward T. A. Pickett

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban ecology is a rapidly developing scientific discipline with great relevance to sustainable city design and management. Though several frameworks have been proposed in the last 10 years, urban ecology, as yet, has no complete, mature theory. There are, however, general principles emerging that may facilitate the development of such a theory. In the meantime, these principles can serve as useful guides for ecological landscape design and maintenance. This paper aims to use the principles to conceptually frame a series of papers to follow in this special issue. The main ecological principles concerning cities are that: 1) Cities are ecosystems; …

Predicting Intra-Urban Variation In Air Pollution Concentrations With Complex Spatio-Temporal Interactions, Adam A. Szpiro, Paul D. Sampson, Lianne Sheppard, Thomas Lumley, Sara D. Adar, Joel Kaufman Nov 2008

Predicting Intra-Urban Variation In Air Pollution Concentrations With Complex Spatio-Temporal Interactions, Adam A. Szpiro, Paul D. Sampson, Lianne Sheppard, Thomas Lumley, Sara D. Adar, Joel Kaufman

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We describe a methodology for assigning individual estimates of long-term average air pollution concentrations that accounts for a complex spatio-temporal correlation structure and can accommodate unbalanced observations. This methodology has been developed as part of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air), a prospective cohort study funded by the U.S. EPA to investigate the relationship between chronic exposure to air pollution and cardiovascular disease. Our hierarchical model decomposes the space-time field into a “mean” that includes dependence on covariates and spatially varying seasonal and long-term trends and a “residual” that accounts for spatially correlated deviations from the …
