Occurrence Of Digenean Larvae In Freshwater Snails In The Ruvu Basin, Tanzania, G. Nkwengulila, E. S. P. Kigadye

Tanzania Journal of Science

A survey was carried out on digenean larvae infecting freshwater snails in five habitats in Dar es Salaam, Ruvu and Morogoro. 9424 snails belonging to 12 species from five families were examined for digenean infection from July 1996 – June 1997. 20 morphologically distinguishable cercariae were recovered. Multiple infections were not recorded. While the general prevalence of digeneans in snails was low (3.5%), variations occurred between seasons, among habitats and snail host species. Prevalence was high during the dry season but low in the rain season. Among habitats, highest prevalence was recorded at Kinondoni pond and lowest at Ruvu ponds, …

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome And Hypertension, Mohammed A. Al-Abri, Khamis M. Al-Hashmi

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

The obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) is a common disorder, affecting around 2–4% of the middle-aged population. There is a strong association between OSAHS and hypertension, based on animal, large epidemiological and interventional studies. The epidemiological studies have shown a dose-response relationship between apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI) and the risk of developing hypertension. Different mechanisms may have a role in the process of elevated blood pressure in OSAHS. Sympathetic activity is increased in OSAHS patients during sleep and wakefulness. This increase in sympathetic activity is probably due to activation of baroreflexes and chemoreflexes by frequent arousals and hypoxaemia a result of …

Fulminant Varicella Zoster Infection With Multiorgan Involvement A Case Report, Sudheer Ps Ahamed, Abdullah Balkhair, Rajan

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Varicella zoster infections are considered to be mild and ubiquitous infections predominantly affecting the paediatric population. However, in adults and in specific groups of patients, such as those who are immunosuppressed, varicella infections can be fulminant and life threatening. We here present a case report of a young female patient with a normal immune system who had a fulminant varicella infection with multiorgan involvement.

Frances Grice, Wilmer Amina Carter Foundation Nov 2008

Frances Grice, Wilmer Amina Carter Foundation

Bridges Digital Archive: Audio and Video Recordings

Frances Grice discusses her move to San Bernardino in 1961 to join her aunt Valerie Pope, and how her hopes for the California dream were challenged as she encountered housing and schools that were more segregated than in her hometown of Detroit. She described the tight community network that she forged, and how this community helped her raise her kids as a single-working mother and community activist. She describes how the League of Community Mothers began initially out of frustration with cuts to busing that impacted black and Mexican kids on the westside more than white kids, and how she …

Hepatoma Cells Up-Regulate Expression Of Programmed Cell Death-1 On T Cells, Ji Chen, Gui-Qiang Wang Nov 2008

Hepatoma Cells Up-Regulate Expression Of Programmed Cell Death-1 On T Cells, Ji Chen, Gui-Qiang Wang

Pharmacology and Toxicology Faculty Publications

AIM: To investigate the effect of hepatoma cells on up-regulation of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), and the function of PD-1 on T cells. METHODS: HepG2 or HepG2.2.1.5 cells were co-cultured with a lymphoma cell line-Jurkat cells. PD-1 expression was detected by flow cytometry. IL-2, INF-γ and IL-10 in culture supernatant were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cytotoxic action of T cells was determined by MTT reduction assay-direct mononuclear cell cytotoxicity assay. RESULTS: The PD-1 expression on Jurkat cells increased by 16.17% ± 2.5% and 17.43% ± 2.2% after HepG2 or HepG2.2.1.5 cells were co-cultured for 48 h. The levels …

Genetic Counselling And Testing For Inherited Gene Mutations In Newly Diagnosed Patients With Breast Cancer: A Review Of The Existing Literature And A Proposed Research Agenda, Bettina Meiser, Kathy Tucker, Michael Friedlander, Kristine Barlow-Stewart, Elizabeth Lobb, Christobel Saunders, Gillian Mitchell

Research outputs pre 2011

Many women newly diagnosed with breast cancer and with a strong family history of breast cancer are referred to a family cancer service for genetic counselling and for consideration of genetic testing for germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes following completion of their cancer treatment. However, there is growing evidence that mutation status may influence treatment recommendations, and that there may be benefits in having 'treatment-focused genetic counselling and testing' available shortly after cancer diagnosis. This article reviews the literature that could inform the development of treatment-focused genetic counselling and testing, including: the rationale for genetic testing to aid with …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

BACKGROUND: The addition of rituximab to combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP), or R-CHOP, has significantly improved the survival of patients with diffuse large-B-cell lymphoma. Whether gene-expression signatures correlate with survival after treatment of diffuse large-B-cell lymphoma is unclear.

METHODS: We profiled gene expression in pretreatment biopsy specimens from 181 patients with diffuse large-B-cell lymphoma who received CHOP and 233 patients with this disease who received R-CHOP. A multivariate gene-expression-based survival-predictor model derived from a training group was tested in a validation group.

RESULTS: A multivariate model created from three gene-expression signatures--termed "germinal-center B-cell," "stromal-1," and "stromal-2"--predicted …

Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard Nov 2008

Acknowledging Morality In Methodology, Rachelle Erika Howard

Theses and Dissertations

Marriage and family research has its foundation in the positivist tradition, which dismisses the relevance of morality to the scientific enterprise. Yet morality is inherent in marriage and family studies—both in the topics studied and in methodology. In this conceptual research, positivist assumptions are explicated to show that positivist methodology relies on a stance of moral neutrality that turns out to be a hidden morality. This hidden morality requires that people be studied as other objects. The need for a methodology that has an explicit moral philosophy and that acknowledges that humans are not “things” is discussed. Levinas' relational philosophy …

Closing The Loop On Regulatory Authority Vs. Institutional Autonomy In An Age Of Accountability “The Government’S Role In Accreditation”, C Barnabas Charles Nov 2008

Closing The Loop On Regulatory Authority Vs. Institutional Autonomy In An Age Of Accountability “The Government’S Role In Accreditation”, C Barnabas Charles

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

The guiding theme that has given impetus to the federal government’s continued involvement in issues of accreditation has been that the government has sought to increase its control of higher education through accreditation. As Pedersen (2005) surmises, “…the federal government has chosen to use theregional associations as a "Trojan horse" to exert greater influence onaccreditation.” However, if representatives of Department of Education areasked, they will claim that the department has been motivated by an honestdesire to ensure that the public is not misled by false claims of quality and valuemade by colleges and universities. On the contrary, most colleges anduniversities …
