Consumption, Happiness, And Climate Change, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Mark A. Cohen Dec 2008

Consumption, Happiness, And Climate Change, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Mark A. Cohen

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

A large body of literature has developed over the past Jeveral years on the economics of happiness. One of the key insights of this literature is that beyond a subsistence level of income, relative income is often more important than absolute income to individual well-being. This is true for both comparisons against a reference group, e.g., across a community or country, as well as comparisons for the same individual over time. Another key insight is that changes in income have only transitory effects on well-being.

In this Article, we explore the implications of this literature for understanding the relationship between …

Discounting Dilemmas: Editors' Introduction, W. Kip Viscusi Dec 2008

Discounting Dilemmas: Editors' Introduction, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Two developments pose dilemmas for well established discounting techniques: (1) The extremely long time horizons associated with recently prominent environmental policy problems, such as climate change and nuclear waste storage, have made it important to take seriously both benefits to future generations and extreme uncertainties in projecting the returns to policies and future well being. (2) Findings in the burgeoning field of behavioral economics have made it clear that individuals routinely depart significantly from rational prescriptions when making choices over time, thus undermining a bulwark of the discounting approach. These two sets of dilemmas are addressed in a series of …

Retinoid X Receptor And Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-Gamma Agonists Cooperate To Inhibit Matrix Metalloproteinase Gene Expression, Peter S. Burrage, Adam C. Schmucker, Yanqing Ren, Michael B. Sporn, Constance E. Brinckerhoff Dec 2008

Retinoid X Receptor And Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-Gamma Agonists Cooperate To Inhibit Matrix Metalloproteinase Gene Expression, Peter S. Burrage, Adam C. Schmucker, Yanqing Ren, Michael B. Sporn, Constance E. Brinckerhoff

Dartmouth Scholarship

We recently described the ability of retinoid X receptor (RXR) ligand LG100268 (LG268) to inhibit interleukin-1-beta (IL-1-β)-driven matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and MMP-13 gene expression in SW-1353 chondrosarcoma cells. Other investigators have demonstrated similar effects in chondrocytes treated with rosiglitazone, a ligand for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ), for which RXR is an obligate dimerization partner. The goals of this study were to evaluate the inhibition of IL-1--induced expression of MMP-1andMMP-13 by combinatorial treatment with RXR and PPAR  ligands and to investigate the molecular mechanisms of this inhibition.

Building A Knowledge Economy Index For Southern Metropolitan Areas, Kristine Koutout Dec 2008

Building A Knowledge Economy Index For Southern Metropolitan Areas, Kristine Koutout

All Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to determine if the methodology used to build the South Carolina Research Authority Knowledge Economy Index (KEI) for states can be replicated and applied to Southern Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). Data to imitate the KEI measures for workforce education and fast growth firms were available at the MSA-level; however, academic R&D was used as a proxy for industrial R&D in this index because data was not available for MSAs. An index for Southern MSAs was built based on the coefficients from the OLS results. Workforce education was the most important factor for increasing mean …

A Hierarchical Group Model For Programming Sensor Networks, James Horey Dec 2008

A Hierarchical Group Model For Programming Sensor Networks, James Horey

Computer Science ETDs

A hierarchical group model that decouples computation from hardware can characterize and aid in the construction of sensor network software with minimal overhead. Future sensor network applications will move beyond static, homogeneous deployments to include dynamic, heterogeneous elements. These sensor networks will also gain new users, including casual users who will expect intuitive interfaces to interact with sensor networks. To address these challenges, a new computational model and a system implementing the model are presented. This model ensures that computations can be readily reassigned as sensor nodes are introduced or removed. The model includes methods for communication to accommodate these …

Establishing A Basis For Multi-System Collaboration: Systemic Team Development, Rosalyn M. Bertram Dec 2008

Establishing A Basis For Multi-System Collaboration: Systemic Team Development, Rosalyn M. Bertram

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Reports of child sexual abuse require police, child protective services, forensic and medical evaluators, prosecutors, family court and treatment providers to negotiate complementary, overlapping roles with children and families. Administrators from these agencies in Kansas City, Missouri clarified this multi-system response by applying a theory-based model for team development previously studied in direct practice with families. This article presents that model and an exploratory case study of this effort. Findings suggest the model's efficacy for resolving inter-agency conflict and may contribute to constructing logic models in multi-system collaboration

Racial/Ethnic Differences In Religious Congregation-Based Social Service Delivery Efforts, R. Khari Brown Dec 2008

Racial/Ethnic Differences In Religious Congregation-Based Social Service Delivery Efforts, R. Khari Brown

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The current study utilizes Swidler's (1986) cultural toolkit theory to explain racial/ethnic differences in American religious congregations' provision of social service programs. This study suggests that black Americans' reliance upon structural tools to assess poverty contributes to their congregations being more heavily involved than majority white congregations in the provision of social services that attempt to make a longer-term impact on community life (i.e. academic tutoring and job training). In contrast, white Americans' greater reliance upon individualistic tools to understand poverty arguably contributes to their congregations being more heavily involved in the provision of programs that have a shorter- term …

"I'M Glad You Asked": Homeless Clients With Severe Mental Illness Evaluate Their Residential Care, Katherine Tyson Mccrea, Lesa Spravka

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Homeless clients with severe mental illness can offer considerable insight about their residential care, but there are significant methodological challenges in eliciting their service evaluations: maximizing participation, facilitating self-expression, and preserving clients' natural meanings. This study addresses those challenges and presents qualitative data residential care staff obtained from 210 clients. While clients prioritized meeting their subsistence needs, they emphasized attaining inner well-being and mutually respectful relationships, and that group services needed to reduce confrontational interactions in order to be helpful. For after-care services, clients sought sustained relationships with staff grounded in client initiative, combining respect for their autonomy with psychosocial …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Obesity and diabetes are frequently associated with cardiovascular disease. When a normal heart is subjected to brief/sublethal repetitive ischemia and reperfusion (I/R), adaptive responses are activated to preserve cardiac structure and function. These responses include but are not limited to alterations in cardiac metabolism, reduced calcium responsiveness, and induction of antioxidant enzymes. In a model of ischemic cardiomyopathy inducible by brief repetitive I/R, we hypothesized that dysregulation of these adaptive responses in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice would contribute to enhanced myocardial injury. DIO C57BL/6J mice were subjected to 15 min of daily repetitive I/R while under short-acting anesthesia, a protocol …

Coordinated Changes In Mrna Turnover, Translation, And Rna Processing Bodies In Bronchial Epithelial Cells Following Inflammatory Stimulation, Yuxin Zhai, Zhenping Zhong, Chyi-Ying A Chen, Zhenfang Xia, Ling Song, Michael R Blackburn, Ann-Bin Shyu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Bronchial epithelial cells play a pivotal role in airway inflammation, but little is known about posttranscriptional regulation of mediator gene expression during the inflammatory response in these cells. Here, we show that activation of human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells by proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-4 (IL-4) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) leads to an increase in the mRNA stability of the key chemokines monocyte chemotactic protein 1 and IL-8, an elevation of the global translation rate, an increase in the levels of several proteins critical for translation, and a reduction of microRNA-mediated translational repression. Moreover, using the BEAS-2B cell system and …
