Evaluating The Influence Of Airport Governance Structures On Financial Performance, Marcelo Lima Dec 2008

Evaluating The Influence Of Airport Governance Structures On Financial Performance, Marcelo Lima

Theses and Dissertations

Medium hub airports in the United States vary in their governance structures. Airports are operated by an airport authority, transportation authority, city, county or state governance. These different types of governance structures establish the guidelines of how an airport will operate. The predicted growth in air travel in the coming years has inauspiciously coincided with expected cuts in federal airport funding programs. Airport profits, operating costs and cost per enplaned passenger were compared among the five governing structures to evaluate financial performances among the airport groups. The comparison was done using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests. …

Alternative Land Use Patterns To Minimize Congestion (Volume 2: Evaluating The Feasibility Of New Urbanism In An Existing Neighborhood), Huei Koh, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Urban sprawl creates serious traffic congestion. Alternative land use patterns may be the best solution. New Urbanists claim that, by placing frequently-visited sites within walking distance of homes and creating a pleasant walking environment, people are more willing to choose non-motorized transportation mode to do such activities.

Part I of this study investigated the ability of travel demand models to estimate the impacts of alternative land use patterns. Part II conducted an economic viability analysis for a mixed land use neighborhood and collected land use preferences at meetings of neighborhood associations. The objective in Part III was to evaluate the …

Drawing From The Wells Of Culture: Grace Onyango And The Kenyan Political Scene (1964-1983), Phoebe Musandu

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper examines the career of Grace Onyango in a bid to recover the history of independent Kenya’s most prominent female politician. To find success as a politician, Onyango had to have an understanding of the interplay between her ethnic culture, the cultures of those with whom she interacted as well as the dynamics of newly independent Kenya’s local and national politics.

The Autonomy Of Ugandan Women’S Organizations: How It Matters In Creating And Maintaining A Dependable Democracy, Caroline Tushabe Dec 2008

The Autonomy Of Ugandan Women’S Organizations: How It Matters In Creating And Maintaining A Dependable Democracy, Caroline Tushabe

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

For African nations “independence” from colonial rule seemed a long-awaited time that would re-establish and/ or introduce democracy. In 1962 Uganda embraced “independence” from colonial rule with both arms. However, practices of poor governance, increased political instability and economic uncertainties slowly and steadily eroded women’s hard work which sustained the nation during the regimes of Idi Amin (1971-79) and Obote II (1980-84). When Uganda finally returned to democratic systems of government, quotas were reserved for women without any acknowledgement of women’s previous participation both in private and public spaces. Though there are now more women in government positions, the system …

A Puppet On A String: The Manipulation And Nationalization Of The Female Body In The “Female Circumcision Crisis” Of Colonial Kenya, Sara Boulanger Dec 2008

A Puppet On A String: The Manipulation And Nationalization Of The Female Body In The “Female Circumcision Crisis” Of Colonial Kenya, Sara Boulanger

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

In pre-colonial Kenya, women shared power and ownership, and conducted many important social and cultural ceremonies, in particular initiation. But with Britain’s colonial takeover of Kenya at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the steadily growing power of colonial rulers and growing status of missionaries, came a total restructuring of society’s gendered norms. By the 1920s, Christianity had created a divide among Kikuyu-speaking people in colonial Kenya over several issues. This study focuses on one of those: the circumcision of girls and young women and legislation passed in relation to the practice. Basing her study largely on documents in …

Accessing Housing Finance In South Africa: The Role Of Women Activism, Catherine Ndinda, Ufo Okeke-Uzodike Dec 2008

Accessing Housing Finance In South Africa: The Role Of Women Activism, Catherine Ndinda, Ufo Okeke-Uzodike

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Women’s history in South Africa is replete with examples of exclusion, discrimination, and marginalization. The transition to democracy in 1994 and inclusion of gender equality in the post-apartheid constitution in 1996 were seen as steps in the right direction towards addressing women’s oppression and creating gender equity in accessing housing finance. The subsequent formulation of policies and institutions meant to achieve gender equality put women’s concerns in the public domain. However women’s access to capital and housing finance in particular remain challenges in accessing improved housing. An exploration of women’s position with regard to housing finance points to the ways …

Pyrosequencing Analysis Of The Trichodiene Synthase 5 (Tri 5) Gene From The Members Of The Genus Stachybotrys, Tineace Taylor Farrow Dec 2008

Pyrosequencing Analysis Of The Trichodiene Synthase 5 (Tri 5) Gene From The Members Of The Genus Stachybotrys, Tineace Taylor Farrow

Theses (Pre-2016)

This research will focus on multiple isolates of Stachybotrys species from culture collection companies which will be studied in an attempt to determine the presence of the Trichodiene synthase 5 (Tri5) gene, an enzyme involved in the early stages of the biosynthesis of trichothecenes. Using general primers, the Tri5 gene will be amplified by customized PCR technique. The amplicons will be sequenced using a new multiple sequence technique personally designed. Stachybotrys is a genus of filamentous fungi belonging to the class of anamorphic ascomycetes (Kirk et al, 2001). The genus has a single well-known species, Stachybotrys chartarum. S. chartarum was …

Breaking Protocol: The Failure Of The Bush Administration To Ratify The Kyoto Protocol As A State Crime, Jacquelynn A. Doyon Dec 2008

Breaking Protocol: The Failure Of The Bush Administration To Ratify The Kyoto Protocol As A State Crime, Jacquelynn A. Doyon

Masters Theses

Using the Kyoto Protocol as a centrifugal focus point, this research conceptualizes the failure of the United States to act on global warming as a state crime. The decision of the United States not to ratify the protocol was largely based on economic justifications. However, the actions taken following the Kyoto Protocol indicate that the US government was instead dedicated more to their own economical interests, rather than those of the state was a whole. Through the exploration of possible economic and political motivations, the research identifies ulterior motives of the Bush administration that have proved to be detrimental to …

Thirty Years Of Fellowship: A Retrospective, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton Dec 2008

Thirty Years Of Fellowship: A Retrospective, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

2008 is an exciting year for the BCTS. The fact that we’ve survived as long as we have is nothing short of a miracle. In 1978 our organization included thirty-four members, thirty of whom were clerics. Several were graduate students trying to complete their PhD dissertations. Today, we are assistant, associate, and full professors, canon lawyers, and even bishops, although there are still a few graduate student associate members. Slightly more of us are lay members than clergy. We are theologians, historians, social scientists, natural scientists, classicists, philosophers, deans, liturgists, and campus ministers. Some of us are now the leading …

The Sources And Meaning Of The Conversion Of Claude Mckay, Cecilia Moore Dec 2008

The Sources And Meaning Of The Conversion Of Claude Mckay, Cecilia Moore

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this paper, delivered during the 2007 annual meeting at Saint Meinrad Archabbey, Moore discusses the conversion experience of the controversial Jamaican poet and novelist Claude McKay. An influential artist of the Harlem Renaissance, McKay was a troubled and complex man. The spiritual journey of this former agnostic is moving and inspirational.

Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale Dec 2008

Racial Reconciliation In Christian Ethics: Toward Starting A Conversation, Bryan Massingale

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this article, delivered originally in 1998 at Marquette University, the author confronts the reality of racism by introducing the need for racial reconciliation. Addressing such issues as social structures and evangelical approaches to the question of race, Massingale ends with a critique of the approach of Catholic theologians and ethicists to racial justice. In the end, Massingale remarks that for Catholics the legacy of slavery continues to hinder an openness to the reality of Africans and African Americans in the Church and in society.

Identification Of Chlorinated Solvent Sources In The Indoor Air Of Private Residences Around Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Andrew Jensen Hall Dec 2008

Identification Of Chlorinated Solvent Sources In The Indoor Air Of Private Residences Around Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Andrew Jensen Hall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Volatile chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene (TCE), 1,2 dichloroethane (1,2 DCA), and perchloroethylene (PCE) have been identified in the indoor air of residences located near Hill Air Force Base (AFB), Utah. These vapors can originate from either volatilization of contaminates from shallow contaminated groundwater and transport into residences or from sources within the residence. The focus of the thesis was the development of a testing strategy for determining sources of TCE, 1,2 DCA, and PCE in the indoor air of residences near Hill AFB.

Eight residences were selected for this study by Hill AFB based on prior detections of TCE, …

藉由線上網路與Phs系統提昇臨床醫學教育教與學雙向回饋, 嘉德 林, 錫金 吳, 戊忠 沈, 世傑 廖, 崇豪 蔡, 正介 林

Journal of Medical Education

Privacy Engine For Context-Aware Enterprise Application Services, Marion Blount, John Davis, Maria Ebling, William Jerome, Barry Leiba, Xuan Liu, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Satisfying the varied privacy preferences of individuals, while exposing context data to authorized applications and individuals, remains a major challenge for context-aware computing. This paper describes our experiences in building a middleware component, the context privacy engine (CPE), that enforces a role-based, context-dependent privacy model for enterprise domains. While fundamentally an ACL-based access control scheme, CPE extends the traditional ACL mechanism with usage control and context constraints. This paper focuses on discussing issues related to managing and evaluating context-dependent privacy policies. Extensive experimental studies with a production-grade implementation and real-life context sources demonstrate that the CPE can support a large …

Application At The Bedside: Moving From Knowing How To Knowing Why In Nursing, Joyel J. Brule Dec 2008

Application At The Bedside: Moving From Knowing How To Knowing Why In Nursing, Joyel J. Brule

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The nursing field is beginning to emerge as a profession with curricula that emphasis nursing as a discipline distinguished from a medically dominated paradigm. This changing focus places emphasis on professional competence upon graduation and entry into practice to foster fitness for purpose within an environment of continuously changing expectations of the nurse by society. Despite a growing body of research on transition into practice, a gap exists as to when this transition occurs and how this finding may influence educational preparation of nurses. This qualitative, exploratory study examined nurses’ perceptions of their transformation from novice to professional practitioner by …
