Toward A Rural Critical Criminology, Joseph F. Donnermeyer, Walter Dekeseredy Dec 2008

Toward A Rural Critical Criminology, Joseph F. Donnermeyer, Walter Dekeseredy

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

A review of the extant literature reveals a recent growth in critical criminological analyses of rural crime and societal reactions to it. Nevertheless, rural critical criminology is still in a state of infancy and requires much more development. Thus, heavily influenced by Taylor, Walton, and Young’s(1973) path-breaking book The New Criminology and by research on woman abuse in rural communities, the main objective of this article, then, is twofold: (1) to describe the key reasons for a more fully developed rural critical criminology and (2) to outline some of its key elements. Also included in this article is a brief …

Making Methamphetamine, Ralph Weisheit Dec 2008

Making Methamphetamine, Ralph Weisheit

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

In many parts of the U.S. methamphetamine production remains a serious problem despite efforts to restrict access to precursor chemicals. Methamphetamine laboratories are a particular issue in rural areas, where many essential chemicals are available and where a lower population density means that noxious fumes are less likely to be noticed. This paper shows how the problem emerged and changed over time and includes: Early production in the U.S., the spread of meth production, the process of making meth, precursor control efforts, superlabs versus small local operations, health risks, contaminated lab sites, and children found in methamphetamine lab sites.

Rural Crime And Policing In American Indian Communities, L. Edward Wells, David N. Falcone Dec 2008

Rural Crime And Policing In American Indian Communities, L. Edward Wells, David N. Falcone

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

While people in rural places generally have less crime, American Indians and communities are an anomaly, by sufferingfrom unusually high rates of criminal victimization despite being predominantly rural. One element with thisheightened vulnerability to crime is the historic under-policing of Indian reservations and communities. This paper examines the policing of Indian communities, first by tracing the historical development of Indian tribal police in the United States overthe past two centuries, which shapes the legal-social context for presentday Indian police agencies. Next the paper identifies three major factorslimiting the implementation of effective police forces by Indian communities: (1) legal limitations on the …

Violent And Criminal Behaviors In Rural And Non-Rural African American Youth: A Risk-Protective Factor Approach, Elizabeth Trejos-Castillo, Alexander T. Vazsonyi, Dusty D. Jenkins Dec 2008

Violent And Criminal Behaviors In Rural And Non-Rural African American Youth: A Risk-Protective Factor Approach, Elizabeth Trejos-Castillo, Alexander T. Vazsonyi, Dusty D. Jenkins

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Once believed to be a poor inner city neighborhood characteristic, youth violence and crime are now recognized as problems in rural areas as well (Osgood and Chambers 2000). Studies on their etiology remain scarce, particularly with a focus on minority youth. Given the importance of individual characteristics and a positive future orientation (educational aspirations) during adolescence, the current study tested a riskprotective factor approach with measures of risk proneness, self-esteem, educational commitment, and educational expectations to predict both direct and “indirect” measures of violence and criminal behaviors (assault, encounters with law enforcement, and court appearances) in samples of rural (n=687) …

Integration-Regulation And Lethal Violence: A Sociological Examination Of The Rural-Urban Suicide Differential In The U.S. Gulf South 1970-2000, Russell R. Davis Dec 2008

Integration-Regulation And Lethal Violence: A Sociological Examination Of The Rural-Urban Suicide Differential In The U.S. Gulf South 1970-2000, Russell R. Davis

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Within the sociological literature rates of lethal violence have theoretically andempirically been associated with urban location. In many advanced industrial countries rising rates of rural suicide have resulted in an unprecedented reversal of the rural-urban suicide differential. This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the implications of rural-urban location within contemporary Durkheimian macro social suicide research. Combining county level mortality, demographic, economic, and religious data thisstudy empirically: a) details longitudinal patterns of rural and urban county age-adjusted suicide rates for the Southern Gulf States from 1970-2000; b) standardizes and regresses crude white male suicide rates for rural and …

Illegal Dumping: Large And Small Scale Littering In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth D. Tunnell Dec 2008

Illegal Dumping: Large And Small Scale Littering In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth D. Tunnell

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Illegal dumping, a social problem greatly affecting some rural states, occurs at both the large and small scale as open dump sites and roadside trash. Focusing on Kentucky, a rural state without mandatory trash pickup and a per capita income below and a poverty rate above the national average, this photo essay describes the dumping and littering problem. As is shown, legislative and executive initiatives have made some inroads in large-scale clean up. Some local governments, however, appear apathetic about addressing illegal dumping in their own communities. Kentucky’s litter problem is showing few signs of improvement and roadside littering seemingly …

Levamisole-Induced Multifocal Inflammatory Leukoencephalopathy: A Casereport, Chueh-Hung Wu, Lu Lu Dec 2008

Levamisole-Induced Multifocal Inflammatory Leukoencephalopathy: A Casereport, Chueh-Hung Wu, Lu Lu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Levamisole, which is the L-isomer of tetramisole, has been used as an antihelminthic agent. Due to its immunomodulating property, it has been used to treat recurrent aphthous ulcers, pemphigus vulgaris, and malignant melanoma. It also has been used along with 5-fluorouracil to treat colon cancer. The side effects are mild and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and metal taste. However, existing evidence suggests that levamisole can induce multifocal inflammatory leukoencephalopathy. The course of levamisole-induced multifocal inflammatory leukoencephalopathy is monophasic and progressive. Clinical symptoms include gait ataxia, dysarthria, dysphasia, conscious disturbance and weakness of the extremities (from hemiparesis to tetraplegia). The exact …

Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria Complicated By An Arterial Cerebral Infarction: A Casereport, Cheng-Hui Huang, Liang-Wei Huang, Mu-Jung Kao, Teh-Chen Wang, Hui-Chi Shu, Zong-Jing Wang Dec 2008

Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria Complicated By An Arterial Cerebral Infarction: A Casereport, Cheng-Hui Huang, Liang-Wei Huang, Mu-Jung Kao, Teh-Chen Wang, Hui-Chi Shu, Zong-Jing Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare acquired disorder caused by a somatic mutation of the hematopoietic stem cells, which results in a loss of the complement regulatory proteins usually present on the membrane of blood cells. The outcome is an increased tendency for complement to damage the blood cells and, after a series of reactions, hemolytic and thrombotic episodes may occur. On reviewarticleing past reports, PNH-related thrombosis usually occurs in the venous system and only rarely happens in the arterial system. In our case, a male patient was found to have suffered from dark urine and anemia after each of …

Rehabilitation In A Patient With Delayed Post-Hypoxic Encephalopathy: A Casereport, Yao-Jen Chen, Su-Ju Tsai, Yueh-Lin Tsai Dec 2008

Rehabilitation In A Patient With Delayed Post-Hypoxic Encephalopathy: A Casereport, Yao-Jen Chen, Su-Ju Tsai, Yueh-Lin Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Carbon monoxide poisoning from accidents or suicide attempts often result in delayed post-hypoxic encephalopathy. Patients with delayed post-hypoxic encephalopathy typically present with recurrent apathy, confusion, agitation, and/or progressive neurological deficits, despite apparent transient recovery. Autopsy reports often reveal diffuse demyelination of subcortical white matter, but the exact pathogenesis is not clear. While comprehensive physical examination and history taking is necessary in diagnosing delayed post-hypoxic encephalopathy, magnetic resonance imaging can be very helpful in the diagnostic work-up. Rehabilitation for severe post-hypoxic encephalopathy can prevent complications such as immobilization and can improve patients' functional status. We report the history, diagnosis, and rehabilitative outcome …

Ultrasound Examination Of Shoulders In Wheelchair Users With Paraplegia, Jiann-Perng Chen, Yi-Pin Chiang, Gwo-Chi Hu, Wan-Yi Shih, Kuan-Wen Chen Dec 2008

Ultrasound Examination Of Shoulders In Wheelchair Users With Paraplegia, Jiann-Perng Chen, Yi-Pin Chiang, Gwo-Chi Hu, Wan-Yi Shih, Kuan-Wen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Due to the prolonged use of upper extremities for weight-bearing, the shoulder joints of paraplegic wheelchair-users are prone to injury. Once shoulder pain occurs, performance of activities required for daily living would thus be disturbed. In past studies, the shoulders of the spinal cord injured patients were evaluated with arthrography or magnetic resonance images and the rotator cuff injuries were found. In the current study, we used ultrasonography to detect rotator cuff injuries of paraplegic wheelchair-users. The factors associated with ultrasonographic findings were also investigated.Thirty paraplegic wheelchair-users, 26 males and 4 females, were recruited for this study. Both shoulder joints …

Sonographic Appearance Of Surgically Repaired Achilles Tendons, Kao-Shang Shih, Ya-Ping Huang, Tyng-Guey Wang, Chun-Sheng Wu, Ching-Chuan Jiang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background and purpose: Ultrasonography is an accurate and non-invasive imaging tool for assessing a ruptured Achilles tendon. This study attempts to correlate the sonographic appearances of surgically repaired Achilles tendons with their clinical outcomes. Methods: Ten patients (3 men and 7 women) with surgically repaired Achilles tendons were enrolled in this study. All patients had unilateral Achilles tendon ruptures related to sports injuries. All were treated by the same orthopedic surgeon at a University Hospital, from January 1990 to September 2000. Patients had a mean age of 47.2 years (range: 22-66). Mean post-surgical duration was 6.0 years (range: 2.1-12.1). All patients …

Ensemble Of Classifiers Based Data Fusion Of Eeg And Mri For Diagnosis Of Neurodegenerative Disorders, Tejash Patel Dec 2008

Ensemble Of Classifiers Based Data Fusion Of Eeg And Mri For Diagnosis Of Neurodegenerative Disorders, Tejash Patel

Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are rising at an alarming rate as the average age of the population increases, especially in developing nations. The efficacy of the new medical treatments critically depends on the ability to diagnose these diseases at the earliest stages. To facilitate the availability of early diagnosis in community hospitals, an accurate, inexpensive, and noninvasive diagnostic tool must be made available. As biomarkers, the event related potentials (ERP) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) - which has previously shown promise in automated diagnosis - in addition to volumetric magnetic resonance …

Data Fusion Based Optimal Eeg Electrode Selection For Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Brian Balut Dec 2008

Data Fusion Based Optimal Eeg Electrode Selection For Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Brian Balut

Theses and Dissertations

As medicinal and technological advances lengthen the average human life span, diseases affecting the elderly such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are seeing increasingly growing numbers, especially in developed countries. As a result, the necessity for an accurate, inexpensive, noninvasive means of diagnosis becomes particularly important, since such a method is not readily available to the general population. One biomarker that has recently showed promise is the analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG).

Over the course of two studies, more than 130 subjects have been recruited providing information from 16-19 EEG electrodes for each subject. These signals have been decomposed …

The Ghost Of Robinson Jeffers, Temple Cone Dec 2008

The Ghost Of Robinson Jeffers, Temple Cone

Jeffers Studies

This article explores the paradoxical figure of the ghost in Robinson Jeffers’ poetry as a means of understanding his complex relationship with human presence in nature. In poems like “Tor House” and “The Place for No Story,” Jeffers’ spectral self-representation embodies both his desire for integration with the natural landscape and his ambivalence about human impacts on the environment. While Jeffers strives for an ecocentric vision that would minimize human presence, his use of the ghost figure reveals the inescapable trace of human consciousness in environmental perception and expression. The article argues that this tension ultimately suggests the possibility of …

Ultrasonographic Features Of Schwannoma Of The Lower Limb: Two Casereports, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Tyng-Guey Wang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Chung-Li Wang, Yen-Ho Wang Dec 2008

Ultrasonographic Features Of Schwannoma Of The Lower Limb: Two Casereports, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Tyng-Guey Wang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Chung-Li Wang, Yen-Ho Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Schwannoma is a benign encapsulated nerve sheath tumor. It typically develops in middle age with unknown cause and usually involves spinal root and peripheral nerves. We report two cases of schwannoma presenting as palpable mass over lower limbs. Both masses had heterogeneous hypoechogenicity, faint posterior enhancement, and were located eccentric to a nerve fascicle. Preoperative sonography revealed both patients had nerve tumors derived from nerve fascicles. These cases illustrate how sonographic information about the relationship between mass and surrounding structures can facilitate surgical planning.

Hippotherapy On Gross Motor Function In A Child With Hypotonic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy: A 1-Year Follow-Up, Yueh-Ling Hsieh, Shu-Ya Zhan, Shyi-Kuen Wu, Chen-Chia Yang, Yu-Chun Lee, Hong-Ji Luo Dec 2008

Hippotherapy On Gross Motor Function In A Child With Hypotonic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy: A 1-Year Follow-Up, Yueh-Ling Hsieh, Shu-Ya Zhan, Shyi-Kuen Wu, Chen-Chia Yang, Yu-Chun Lee, Hong-Ji Luo

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hippotherapy is used to improve gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, the therapeutic effects of hippotherapy using specific position and its longitudinal improvements in children of hypotonic CP have not been thoroughly examined. A 6-year-old girl with hypotonic quadriplegic CP was noted to have generalized hypotonia and global delay in development before intervention. There was sustained improvement in gross motor function after 12-month hippotherapy. She received a 15-minute intervention twice a week for one year with two treatment positions being used, sitting backwards for the first 3 months and prone propped position for the next 9 …
