Numeracy
Prior to deciding to propose in 2006 that the National Numeracy Network (NNN) publish a new journal for quantitative literacy with their support, the University of South Florida Libraries investigated the publication environment of the field on the Web of Science®. Reproducing part of that study in this paper, we present findings from topic searches (March 2008) for “numeracy,” “quantitative literacy,” and “statistical literacy.” These updated results include a combined bibliography of 338 peer-reviewed articles amongst 210 different journals, by 748 authors from 321 institutions in 25 countries, in a total of 87 subjects (34% of the subject classes in …

Background
The purpose of this study was to compare disability and functional limitations among elderly Asian American subgroups using datasets from the National Health Interview Survey 2001−2003.
Methods
This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed whether activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL) disabilities were different among Asian American subgroups in the United States using data retrieved from the 2001−2003 National Health Interview Survey. For comparing all Asian American subgroups, χ2 analysis was applied for the bivariate comparisons.
Results
Rates of 7.1% and 12.2% for ADL and IADL disability, respectively, within Asian American group were found. The elder Chinese …
Generational Differences In Motivation For Learning: An Ethnographic Research Project On The Differences Between Learning Styles And Motivations To Learn Based On Generation, Alan Debelle
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
There are a number of differences between generational groups as far as influences, technology, and preferences. The purpose of this research project can help determine if there are differences in motivations and preferences toward learning delivery methods, based on age groups. To determine this, a Likert scale survey was issued to seventy four college students via a Zoomerang online survey link. The respondents were only asked to display their age and were classified into one of four generational groups. The Likert scale helped determine preferences to online or traditional classroom training. In addition the respondents were asked to list frustrations …
The Institutional Challenges Of Full-Time Faculty Retirement: Has The Expedition Accomplished All That It Promised And That It Should Accomplish?, Jeffrey Senese
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The retirement of full-time faculty is an issue that is currently and likely to continue to challenge many higher education institutions. It is an issue that has implications that are long-term and both positive and negative. On the positive side for institutions, faculty retirements present potential opportunities to renew the core staffing of the institution. Faculty retirements may allow institutions to add new energy and innovation through the hiring of new faculty. Not that new ideas or innovations are the exclusive realm of new or young, but fresh ideas and approaches in higher education are more typically associated with new …

Access To International Volunteering, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Benjamin J. Lough
Center for Social Development Research
This analysis examines rates of international volunteering among various demographic groups in the United States using data from the 2005 Current Population Survey. We use logistic regression analyses to address the importance of inclusion. Those most likely to serve overseas are white, highly educated, young, foreign-born individuals without dependent children in the home and not employed full-time. As a type of volunteering implemented primarily through the nonprofit sector, these findings suggest implications for recruitment and retention of volunteers who serve abroad.

Gerontology Institute Publications
This report addresses income adequacy for Wisconsin’s older adults using the WOW-GI Elder Economic Security Standard Index (the Index) methodology. The Index benchmarks basic costs of living for elder households and illustrates how costs of living vary geographically and are based on the characteristics of elder households, including household size, home ownership or renter status, and health status. The costs are based on market costs for basic needs of elder households and do not assume any public or private supports.

Is Cardiovascular Health Affected By Exercise Type And Impact?, Sarah A. Buckingham
Is Cardiovascular Health Affected By Exercise Type And Impact?, Sarah A. Buckingham
The Plymouth Student Scientist
The principal aim of this study was to determine whether cardiovascular health, assessed by resting systolic and diastolic blood pressure and resting heart rate, was affected by exercise type (golf vs. tennis) and associated impact (low vs. high). Male and female golfers (n = 40) and tennis players (n = 40) aged between 40 and 71 years completed a short questionnaire relating to their main sport and typical exercise habits. Resting blood pressure and heart rate readings were then taken using an electronic wrist sphygmomanometer. The analysis of variance (General Linear Model) showed that overall there were no significant differences …

Spirituality And Symptom Self Management Of Osteoarthritis, Lois M. Kannan Phd
Dissertations
Healthcare providers need to identify holistic self-care techniques that are endorsed by patients as effective strategies for symptom management of osteoarthritis, which is the single most common cause of disability in older adults. Research in this area may direct the development of interventions to ensure that older adults are afforded every opportunity to remain active and productive, with an improved health related quality of life, despite age related musculoskeletal conditions. The purpose of this study was to describe the relationships among symptom experience, symptom management, and symptom outcome based on spiritual well-being. A quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and noninterventional study design, …

We investigated the in vivo metabolic fate of preb HDL particles in human apolipoprotein A-I transgenic (hA-I Tg) mice. Pre-b HDL tracers were assembled by incubation of [125I]tyramine cellobiose-labeled apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) with HEK293 cells expressing ABCA1. Radiolabeled pre-b HDLs of increasing size (pre-b1, -2, -3, and -4 HDLs) were isolated by fast-protein liquid chromatography and injected into hA-I Tg-recipient mice, after which plasma decay, in vivo remodeling, and tissue uptake were monitored. Pre-b2, -3, and -4 had similar plasma die-away rates, whereas pre-b1 HDL was removed 7-fold more rapidly. Radiolabel recovered in liver and kidney 24 h after tracer …

From Borden To Billing: Identifying A Uniform Approach To Implied Antitrust Immunity From The Supreme Court's Precedents, Jacob L. Kahn
From Borden To Billing: Identifying A Uniform Approach To Implied Antitrust Immunity From The Supreme Court's Precedents, Jacob L. Kahn
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The doctrine of implied antitrust immunity allows courts to reconcile two inconsistent congressional decrees: (1) that unrestrained competition—the primary goal of the antitrust laws—will produce the most efficient results in any marketplace; and (2) that artificial restraints on competition—as achieved through federal regulation—are necessary to ensure the proper functioning of certain industries. Thus, even when Congress has not expressly exempted a defendant's conduct from the antitrust laws, the fact that the conduct occurred in a regulated industry may sometimes be enough to justify an implied exemption. Due to the importance of the antitrust laws, however, the Supreme Court traditionally has …

Transforming Caregiving: African American Custodial Grandmothers And The Child Welfare System, S. Yvette Murphy, Andrea G. Hunter, Deborah J. Johnson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Growing numbers of African American grandmothers are raising grandchildren under the auspices of the child welfare system; however, little is known about the manner in which child welfare policies and practices impact custodial grandparenting. Based on focus groups with African American grandmothers who are raising grandchildren as formal kinship caregivers, this study explored the ways in which the new formalized relationship between the child welfare system and African American custodial grandmothers is transforming the meanings and practices related to intergenerational caregiving in African American families. Drawing on cultural and historical traditions, grandmothers forge a transformative partnership with child welfare that …

APIAS Research Report
- 探討鄉郊長者的需要;
- 量度鄉郊長者的整體生活質素的轉變;
- 評估長者和青少年的相互觀感的轉變;及
- 了解他們對區內設施的意見和使用平安鐘的習慣。

Retirement Effects On Health In Europe, Norma B. Coe, Gema Zamarro
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
What are the health impacts of retirement? As talk of raising retirement ages in pensions and social security schemes continues around the world, it is important to know both the costs and benefits or the individual as well as the governments' budgets. In this paper we use the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) dataset to address this question in a multi-country setting. We use country-specific early and full retirement ages as an instrument for retirement behavior in a regression discontinuity design approach. These statutory retirement ages clearly induce retirement, but are not related to an individual's …
