Hero’S Journey, The Alchemist [9th Grade], Kristen Morgan

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

Students and ninth-graders especially are in search of something to use to make sense of the world. I start the year with the students establishing goals for themselves both academically and personally. Then, we move into a unit that overviews the uses of genre. This unit on the hero’s journey is to extend their ideas of the novel and what it can do as a work of fiction using Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. Like Santiago, the novel’s main character, the students journey to understanding by reading the story. Understanding: The novel genre can be used for different purposes; it can …

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

Throughout this unit students will be introduced to the five themes of geography. These themes will be brought up in future units of study to help students better organize their understandings and perceptions of the world around them. In understanding the themes of Location, Place, Region, Movement, and Human-Environment Interaction, students will be prepared to answer the essential question of “Why is the where important?” The activities and lessons of this unit are built to aid students in their understanding of how humans interact with one another and their environments and to begin to see the differences and similarities of …

Using Local Data To Advance Quantitative Literacy, Stephen Sweet, Susanne Morgan, Danette Ifert Johnson Jul 2008

Using Local Data To Advance Quantitative Literacy, Stephen Sweet, Susanne Morgan, Danette Ifert Johnson

Numeracy

In this article we consider the application of local data as a means of advancing quantitative literacy. We illustrate the use of three different sources of local data: institutional data, Census data, and the National College Health Assessment survey. Our learning modules are applied in courses in sociology and communication, but the strategy of using local data can be integrated beyond these disciplinary boundaries. We demonstrate how these data can be used to stimulate student interests in class discussion, advance analytic skills, as well as develop capacities in written and verbal communication. We conclude by considering concerns that may influence …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

We Use a Factorial Experimental Design to Test Whether Rearing at Colder Temperatures Shifts the Lower Thermal Envelope for Flight of Drosophila Melanogaster Meigen to Colder Temperatures. D. Melanogaster that Developed in Colder Temperatures (15°C) Had a Significant Flight Advantage in Cold Air Compared to Flies that Developed in Warmer Temperatures (28°C). at 14°C, Cold-Reared Flies Failed to Perform a Take-Off Flight ∼47% of the Time Whereas Warm-Reared Flies Failed ∼94% of the Time. at 18°C, Cold- and Warm-Reared Flies Performed Equally Well. We Also Compared Several Traits in Cold- and Warm-Developing Flies to Determine If Cold-Developing Flies Had Better …

Hedge Funds In A Volatile Market, Melvyn Teo Jul 2008

Hedge Funds In A Volatile Market, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

We show that relative to the first half of 2007, the volatility of hedge fund returns has doubled during the September 2007 to April 2008 period. At the same time, aggregate hedge fund returns have declined while exit rates have tripled. Commodity, macro, and, to a lesser extent, arbitrage funds outperformed during this period, while bottom-up funds underperformed. In Asia, funds engaging in less traditional strategies like arbitrage, event driven, fixed income, and distressed debt have emerged relatively unscathed. Our results also suggest that around the world, funds with headquarters near their investment markets, fewer assets under management, and higher …

Water Security, Fear Mitigation And International Water Law (Symposium), A. Dan Tarlock Jul 2008

Water Security, Fear Mitigation And International Water Law (Symposium), A. Dan Tarlock

All Faculty Scholarship

Water lawyers, courts, and others in the water community are fond of quoting the quip attributed to Mark Twain, "whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting over." Not only is there no evidence that Twain ever uttered these words, but the quote has taken on a life of its own which grossly distorts the nature of water competition disputes, especially state to state competition. Both whiskey and water are for human benefit and exist in sufficient quantities throughout the world to satisfy present and future demand. Meeting these demands will be challenging because water must be managed to …

Toward A Transformative Teaching Practice: Criticity, Pedagogy And Praxis, Arturo Rodriguez Jul 2008

Toward A Transformative Teaching Practice: Criticity, Pedagogy And Praxis, Arturo Rodriguez

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

One method to teach a multicultural class: a teacher walks in to a room calls the class to order, steps to the lectern and begins to deliver knowledge. Socially acquired information is disseminated; that gained over years of study and experience. Another view: I walk into a class where my students are sitting quietly at their desks pen and paper at the ready and quietly ask: shall we form a circle? The students agree and after having done so I follow up with a generative (Freire, 1970): what are your current understandings of Diversity? In following the work of Paulo …

Developments In Urban Environmental Information Perception And Communication, Kostas Karatzas, J. Lee Jul 2008

Developments In Urban Environmental Information Perception And Communication, Kostas Karatzas, J. Lee

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Urban environmental information (EI) is related to knowledge concerning the status, the pressures and the consequences of environmental quality parameters to human life and the urban surroundings. One of the most important aspects in the life cycle of EI is knowledge generation and flow, data management and information dissemination between ICT systems and environmental actors, players, or interested parties. In the present paper, urban air quality serves as the application domain, for which the following issues are discussed, • Analysis of the way that environmental information is related to urban structures (roads, buildings, etc) • Investigation of the spatial and …

Eururalis, A Discussion Support Tool For Rural Europe, W. A. Rienks, S. B. Hoek, P. J. F. M. Verweij, R. M. Lokers, B. Vanmeulebrouk

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

European rural areas have changed considerably in the past decades. Agriculture intensified whilst in other areas it marginalized. The rural landscape changed and it will continue to change in future. The forces driving that change are increasingly global by nature: demography, economic growth, climate change and international trade policies. The Eururalis 2.0 project assesses the combined impact of these driving forces. The results are published on a computer based tool to support discussions and to raise awareness of future changes in rural areas. The tool was made suitable for a wide audience, with policy makers as the main target group.

Radar-Based Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval Over Agricultural Used Sites – A Multi-Sensor Approach, M. Pause, Martin Volk, K. Schulz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Spatial distributed information of isochronal surface soil moisture is very important to compensate the inaccuracy of initial conditions and the uncertainty of parameters in hydrological models at the landscape scale. In this paper the conceptual procedure to derive spatial distributed surface soil moisture values from synthetic aperture radar data by using ancillary optical remote sensing data is presented. Different biophysical vegetation parameters like vegetation water content and leaf area index overlay the soil moisture information on the microwave signal and hamper the application of many existing models. Therefore the objective of the proposed study is to test the performance of …

Addressing Cultural And Institutional Barriers To Data And Model Interoperability, P. Dibner, David Arctur Jul 2008

Addressing Cultural And Institutional Barriers To Data And Model Interoperability, P. Dibner, David Arctur

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Despite recent technological advances, proliferation of online databases and community data collection and modeling efforts, the environmental observatory and modeling communities remain fragmented due to the lack of summaries of available observations data, differences in information models and metadata, lack of common data discovery and access protocols tuned to model requirements, and significant semantic differences in data description. However, purely technical solutions for interoperability are insufficient for establishing a shared interoperable infrastructure. The establishment of any technology in a population of potential adopters takes place within a context of social and economic processes. A community cannot become instantaneously aware of …

Can Poverty Maps Direct Development Aid More Effectively To The Neediest?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Developing countries face many difficulties with targeting poverty alleviation programs towards people who need help the most. Often, detailed and accurate information is not readily available, and governments could end up in a double-bind -- distributing resources to individuals not in urgent need of assistance while excluding the poorest of the poor. Singapore Management University economics professor Tomoko Fujii was one of five international researchers who concluded that using ‘poverty maps’ combined with fine geographic targeting can deliver promising results.

Analyzing Best Practices In Technology Education, Dan L. Householder Jul 2008

Analyzing Best Practices In Technology Education, Dan L. Householder

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Innovation in technology education is at an all-time high in school programs around the world. Yet creative teachers rarely have an opportunity, even in their local settings, to elucidate the goals and outcomes of their programs, to explain why specific activities are chosen, and to point out the specific student outcomes accomplished in the technology classroom. In this volume, 12 technology educators describe eight unique approaches to introducing learners to intrinsically interesting learning opportunities in their classrooms. These compelling accounts communicate the excitement of student exploration of topics ranging from puppetry to biotechnology, from reverse engineering to the history of …

The Economic Impact Of The Kentucky Green River Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (Crep), Lorie B. Owen Jul 2008

The Economic Impact Of The Kentucky Green River Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (Crep), Lorie B. Owen

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study examines the impact of the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) on fourteen Kentucky counties. The CREP program is an advancement of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) which began nationally in 1985. The primary intention of both programs is to improve water quality and reduce soil erosion. Thus, in order to stimulate conservation efforts, farmers are given an opportunity to remove land from current production and still reap financial benefits. When CREP was introduced to Kentucky in 2002, the program provided far more lucrative incentives than the parent program. In 2007 CREP underwent an amendment process that broadened the …
