The Return Of Russia: Energy's Superpower Or Potemkin Village?, Greg R. Bayes Aug 2008

The Return Of Russia: Energy's Superpower Or Potemkin Village?, Greg R. Bayes

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

George Kennan's prediction of the Soviet Union's downfall may have, in retrospect, jinxed Russia on the one aspect that had historically worked in its favor: time. The confluence of time and space--brought about by an emphasis on territorial expansion-had greatly aided Russia when difficulties had rendered the variable of time indispensable. When confronted by the likes of Napoleon and Hitler, for example, Russia had at its disposal the luxury of always trading space for time. Although deprived of its empire, the issue of space is not an overarching concern for a Russia that today still spans from Vladivostok to St. …

Structure And Crustal Balance Of The Herald Arch And Hope Basin In The Chukchi Sea, Alaska, D. Alex Patthoff

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Herald Arch is a structural high bounded by the Herald Thrust fault to the northeast and by a normal, or possibly strike-slip, fault to the southwest in the Chukchi Sea, off the northwest coast of Alaska. The thrust continues for approximately 60 kilometers from the northwest tip of the Lisburne Peninsula into the Chukchi Sea. Its dip varies from nearly 60 degrees in the east, to 20 degrees in the west before terminating on the available seismic data. Closer to the shore, the detachment of the Herald Thrust occurs at the edge of a Devonian rift basin containing the …

Essays On Pricing Electricity And Electricity Derivatives In Deregulated Markets, Julia Popova Aug 2008

Essays On Pricing Electricity And Electricity Derivatives In Deregulated Markets, Julia Popova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is composed of four essays on the behavior of wholesale electricity prices and their derivatives. The first essay provides an empirical model that takes into account the spatial features of a transmission network on the electricity market. The spatial structure of the transmission grid plays a key role in determining electricity prices, but it has not been incorporated into previous empirical models. The econometric model in this essay incorporates a simple representation of the transmission system into a spatial panel data model of electricity prices, and also accounts for the effect of dynamic transmission system constraints on electricity …

Does Institutional Capacity Matter? A Case Study Of The Zambian Forestry Department., Rosemary Fumpa Makano Jul 2008

Does Institutional Capacity Matter? A Case Study Of The Zambian Forestry Department., Rosemary Fumpa Makano

Dissertations

Understanding why some organizations are more effective in their service delivery than others is a central discourse in both public administration and political organization. Scholars and practitioners all agree that the defining factor is institutional (state) capacity. Since the mid-1980s, deforestation in Zambia has been on the rise, especially in Protected Forest Areas, suggesting poor management by the Forestry Department, an institution mandated to manage these public lands. Ironically, despite the strategic position that forests hold in sustaining both the daily subsistence needs of over 90% of the Zambian population as well as the as the numerous industries that depend …

Online Travel Information Search Behaviors: An Information Foraging Perspective, Evan Jordan

All Theses

Information search has been a topic of research for a multitude of studies across
several fields, including travel and tourism. However, information search on the internet,
especially in travel and tourism, has rarely been examined. As a result, this research was
undertaken to explore travel information search behaviors on the Internet.
This thesis uses information foraging theory (Pirolli & Card, 1999) as a basis to
examine online travel information search behaviors. In addition, other established
measures of online information search (Hodkinson, Kiel, & McColl-Kennedy, 2000)
were used to supplement findings based upon information foraging theory. Groups of
students from two …

Testicular Embryonal Carcinoma Cell Proliferation In Vitro: Effect Of B152, An Anti-Hyperglycosylated Hcg Monoclonal Antibody, Lawanda Jim, Laurence Cole

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Hyperglycosylated human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG-H), a variant of hCG, has been shown to promote the growth and invasion of trophoblast cells in early pregnancy placental implantation, choriocarcinoma and testicular germ cell malignancies. In a previous study (15), hCG-H was found to have a significant effect on the growth of a choriocarcinoma cell line, JEG-3, and a testicular embroyonal carcinoma cell line, NTERA. It was also shown that, B152, an anti-hCG-H specific monoclonal antibody, significantly inhibited the growth of these cells in vitro and in vivo murine models. In this study, we quantified the amount of hCG-H produced by two embryonal …

Cooperative Federal Structure: A Workable Political-Economy Approach For A New Nepal, Alok Bohara Jul 2008

Cooperative Federal Structure: A Workable Political-Economy Approach For A New Nepal, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The two main ethnocentric proposals for a federal structure –9 ethnic enclaves [CPN (M)] and the 1000 KM long east-west narrow corridor(s) [e.g., Madhesi parties’ demand for a single Terai state] as state(s)— are the two formal proposals that have drawn much attention of the lawmakers. Many, including this author, are of the view that the restructuring of the state needs to go beyond the cultural sentiment to incorporate many other issues such as: ecological interdependence, economy of scale, ethnic harmony, and comparative resource endowments. To that end, a cooperative federal structure proposed here takes the twelve ethnic regional enclaves …

Sound Technology And The Immobilization In Public Visions Of Buster Keaton, Thomas Vaughn Jul 2008

Sound Technology And The Immobilization In Public Visions Of Buster Keaton, Thomas Vaughn

Faculty Publications - Communication & Media Studies

This article reexamines the common perception that film comedian Buster Keaton failed to make the transition from the silent to the sound period. Contrary to popular belief, he enjoyed a four year period during which some of his most successful films were made. The reason for his disappearance from public view at the height of his popularity is linked to the comedians inability to make the artistic transition into the sound era. While his early sound films are successful, he casts himself as an anachronistic image, thus immobilizing his traditional protagonist. Copyright 2008 American Communication Journal. Renders It Necessary That We Should Be Prepared' A Reexamination Of The Militant South Thesis In Territorial Florida, Franklin Nooe

All Theses

This thesis examines the effect of Native Americans on the martial tradition in the Old South. As proposed by John Hope Franklin, the proximity of Southern settlements to Indian tribes aroused grave apprehension regarding the safety of the settlers from hostile attack. This thesis seeks to illustrate a specific example of his assessment. Therefore, the work is focused on the events of the Seminoles in Florida and to a lesser extent the Creeks in Alabama and Georgia. Chronologically the thesis focuses on approximately 1800-1842. Geographically the text is concerned with Florida and the border areas. This thesis argues that the …

Matoaka: Pocahontas In The Age Of Identity, Matthew Shifflett Jul 2008

Matoaka: Pocahontas In The Age Of Identity, Matthew Shifflett

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis details the labors of research and judgment that informed the writing of Matoaka, a Play in Three Acts. Specifically, the thesis explores the historical puzzles surrounding the life of Pocahontas and justifies the decisions made in dramatizing her life in the aforementioned play. Non-fictional works of the last four hundred years are considered, as well as popular dramatic performances of the nineteenth century. These works are examined closely in order to reveal the Pocahontas story as a point of contact between many concurrent social discourses. Reflections are also offered on the production of the aforementioned play and its …

Water Levels Effects On Overall Customer Satisfaction:, Crayton Pruitt Jul 2008

Water Levels Effects On Overall Customer Satisfaction:, Crayton Pruitt

All Theses

Abstract The combination of hydroelectric power generation and the amount of precipitation results in fluctuating water levels on the United States Army Corps of Engineers: Lake Hartwell. Beginning in 2002 and continuing to the end of survey year 2004, water levels ranged from approximately ten feet below full pool to within half a foot under full pool. These fluctuations created difficulty for adjacent landowners to access sufficient water depths for recreational needs. The problems were magnified by a common perception that neighboring lakes', Lake Keowee and Lake Thurmond, water levels had not dropped as dramatically. This study examined the effects …

Regards Sur L’Être Et Le Paraitre Dans Trois Portraits Du Xviie Siècle, Martine J. Landis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduced in French Salons as a parlor game, the literary portrait appears in mid Seventeenth-Century. It is similar to the literary portraits inserted in Roman à clé but it does not hide the identity of the subject behind a pseudonym, it depicts the individual as is. In a self-portrait subjects look at, observe, evaluate then describe themselves. They offer themselves to the gaze of others and propose a true reading of what they are. The self-portrait attempts to harmonize the appearance and the inner being, to render visible the essence of the person. However, in the Seventeenth Century, people reinvent …
