Archival Work In A Surreal World: The Imagination Of George Saunders, Erica Olsen

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

When George Saunders’s first collection of short stories, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, came out in 1996 reviewers emphasized the surrealism of his fictional world of run-down theme parks and virtual-reality franchise businesses: "… a nightmarish post-apocalyptic world that might have been envisioned by Walt Disney on acid," wrote the Philadelphia Inquirer, while Newsweek called it "a cybernetic, postapocalyptic dystopia."

Empowering Students In Information Literacy Practices Using A Collaborative Digital Library For School Projects, Awang Ngah Zainab, Abdullah Abrizah

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This paper examines the affordances that a collaborative digital library (CDL) can bring to bear on supporting information literacy practices in the digital information environment. It suggests that the digital library can contribute to student empowerment in information literacy practices while searching, using and collaboratively building the digital library resources. To illustrate this, the authors have been experimenting with the implementation of an integrated information literacy model based on Eisenberg and Berkowitzâ Big 6 Model and describes the CDL features in association with the information literacy dimensions in this model. The CDL focuses on the project-based learning approach to conduct …

The three main areas of concern towards understanding the characteristics of the park and ride users are the socioeconomic, trip and the parking-related characteristics. Through linear regression, this study identified that the significant attributes that were found to significantly influence the utilization of the facility in the Kuala Lumpur conurbation are total travel time by rail (via the park-and-ride), income, …

Immigrant Remittances, Ezra Rosser Jan 2008

Immigrant Remittances, Ezra Rosser

Connecticut Law Review

Remittances, the sending of money from immigrants back to their home countries, are the newest anti-poverty, development activity of the poor to be applauded by international institutions and economists. Exceeding foreign aid and private investment to many developing countries, remittances are being hailed as a new, untapped resource with powerful poverty alleviation and potential development attributes. After presenting the poverty, developmental, and economic characteristics of this new transnational connection between immigrants and their loved ones, as well as the dangerous effects of excessive remittance regulation, this Article argues that remittances should be understood as an anti-poverty tool, but not as …

The Siren Sounds For Nitrogen, Jeremy S. Scholtes Jan 2008

The Siren Sounds For Nitrogen, Jeremy S. Scholtes

Student Articles and Papers

The international community is intensifying its efforts to combat nitrogen pollution, a threat to human health and the environment. In this Article, Jeremy S. Scholtes examines the nature of this type of pollution and the legal instruments currently in place that deal with it. He begins by explaining the theoretical concerns that negotiators must consider when designing legal instruments, recommending that regional hard law instruments in concert with partnership coordination platforms are the most effective tools for addressing nitrogen pollution. He concludes that the 1979 Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) should be used as the model for developing …

Project Quality Of Offshore Virtual Teams Engaged In Software Requirements Analysis: An Exploratory Comparative Study, Dhruv Nath, Varadharajan Sridhar, Monica Adya, Amit Malik

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The off-shore software development companies in countries such as India use a global delivery model in which initial requirement analysis phase of software projects get executed at client locations to leverage frequent and deep interaction between user and developer teams. Subsequent phases such as design, coding and testing are completed at off-shore locations. Emerging trends indicate an increasing interest in off-shoring even requirements analysis phase using computer mediated communication. We conducted an exploratory research study involving students from Management Development Institute (MDI), India and Marquette University (MU), USA to determine quality of such off-shored requirements analysis projects. Our findings suggest …

Living Cases: Authentic Learning In Action, Dieter Fink Jan 2008

Living Cases: Authentic Learning In Action, Dieter Fink

EDU-COM International Conference

The paper outlines the merit of using case studies in teaching, such as providing real life examples to contextualise theoretical concepts and shifting the emphasis from teacher-centred to more studentcentred activities. While there are a variety of case types the material they provide is traditionally static. However, in real life, solutions are affected by changed circumstances reflecting a volatile environment. Hence, the paper reports on the approach of using a ‗living‘ case where students are confronted with teacher-initiated interventions while solving the case. The specific case was that of a university deciding to make, purchase or outsource an Information Technology …

Engaging The Community In University Teaching: A Cultural Approach To Sustainability Of Effective Learning, Nonofo Losike-Sedimo, Bathsheb Mbongwe Jan 2008

Engaging The Community In University Teaching: A Cultural Approach To Sustainability Of Effective Learning, Nonofo Losike-Sedimo, Bathsheb Mbongwe

EDU-COM International Conference

This paper revisits levels of education and sustainable development implementation in university teaching. It suggests tapping expertise in local communities as a social responsibility for sustainability of student‘s human development success. Where success is measured by the students‘self-actualization progress. Student success, qualitative growth, or acquired capacities is seen as a prerequisite for sustainable development. We take a reformist point of view of sustainability. We look at issues of human behaviour, cognition and negotiation over preferred futures, under a given social policy and education act. Sustainability here is viewed as an inherently normative concept, rooted in real world problems with very …

A Framework For Bioprofile Analysis Over Grid, Pin Hu Jan 2008

A Framework For Bioprofile Analysis Over Grid, Pin Hu

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

An important trend in modern medicine is towards individualisation of healthcare to tailor care to the needs of the individual. This makes it possible, for example, to personalise diagnosis and treatment to improve outcome. However, the benefits of this can only be fully realised if healthcare and ICT resources are exploited (e.g. to provide access to relevant data, analysis algorithms, knowledge and expertise). Potentially, grid can play an important role in this by allowing sharing of resources and expertise to improve the quality of care. The integration of grid and the new concept of bioprofile represents a new topic in …

Mississippi River Towns: From Dubuque, Iowa To Hamilton, Illinois, Bonnie Jean Lawhorn Jan 2008

Mississippi River Towns: From Dubuque, Iowa To Hamilton, Illinois, Bonnie Jean Lawhorn

Graduate Research Papers

Knowing and learning about local history is considered to be important by both Iowa and Illinois State Departments of Education. School Districts have directed their teachers to teach the history of the state as well as the local community. The Mississippi River acts as a border between the two states and has played an important part in the development of villages and towns up and down the river. Living in towns that border the Mississippi River most of my life, I recognize the history that has played out in many of the locations from both sides of the river. Having …
