Myanmarese Refugees In Thailand: The Need For Effective Protection, Buhm Suk Baek, Gauri Subramanium Feb 2008

Myanmarese Refugees In Thailand: The Need For Effective Protection, Buhm Suk Baek, Gauri Subramanium

Cornell Law School J.S.D. Student Research Papers

This paper deals with the Thai government's policy on refugees with a special focus on refugees from Myanmar. It is designed to give suggestions to international human rights NGOs working in the Thai-Myanmar border areas for the protection of the human rights of Myanmarese refugees. Most international human rights NGOs in this region are lobbying for the Thai government to ratify the Refugee Convention or at the very least, take active steps towards the protection of refugees under customary international law.

This paper is, however, concerned by these NGOs’ reliance on the ratification of the Convention as a solution to …

Physicians are familiar with organophosphates (OPs) as a classic, though obscure, cause of cholinergic poisoning. Many opportunities for human exposure existsixty million pounds of OPs are applied as insecticides to sixty million acres of U.S. land each year, and, until recently, over one-fifth of Americans used these chemicals in their homes. Most physicians, however, still know little about the dangers that these pesticides pose to the developing nervous system. By the late 1980s, toxicologists increasingly recognized that toxicants such as lead and mercury, even at doses well-below the level required to cause symptomatic poisoning, could induce subtle, yet permanent, neurological …

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper describes a problem-based chemistry education model in which students perform scientific research on a local environmentally relevant problem. The project is a collaboration among The University of Montana and local high schools centered around Missoula, Montana. "Air Toxics under the Big Sky" involves high school students in collecting air samples inside and outside their homes within and near Missoula. As part of this program, teachers, students, and university researchers investigate the relationship between air pollutants and their harmful respiratory effects. Students experience scientific research, use scientific equipment, gain an insight into the relationship between the environment and public …

Innovations In Philanthropy: The Rockefeller Foundation’S Perspective, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

For nearly 100 years, the mission of the Rockefeller Foundation, “to promote the well-being of humanity by addressing the root causes of serious problems”, has remained the same, even as the foundation continues to adapt its programmes to changing social, economic and cultural needs. It is also a leading proponent of innovation and change in the field of philanthropy itself. Jacqueline Khor, Associate Director, Rockefeller Foundation, delivered a lecture on new trends in philanthropy and the emergence of a new generation of “philanthro-capitalists” at a lecture organised by the Singapore Management University’s Lien Foundation Centre for Social Innovation.

Using Student Response Systems In Economics And Finance Classes, Jean Snavely, Michelle Trawick

Finance Faculty Publications

Student response systems (clickers) offer the potential for student engagement and active learning in the classroom. Use of the technology can also help instructors identify areas of uncertainty and use student feedback to customize lectures. Earlier identification of problem areas for both student and instructor should lead to more efficient and effective use of class time and better learning outcomes. This presentation covers best practices in the use of clickers in introductory statistics and principles of managerial finance classes. Topics include how to use clickers, sample exercises, what has worked and what hasn’t worked from personal experience, how to produce …

A Seascape Approach To Predicting Reef Fish Distribution, Brian K. Walker Feb 2008

A Seascape Approach To Predicting Reef Fish Distribution, Brian K. Walker

Oceanography Faculty Theses and Dissertations

Linking small-scale measurements of species distributions to broad-scale seascapes is necessary to understanding and predicting organismal distributions and their dynamics. This applies to reef fish populations as well. Reef fish studies are often limited to small spatial scales because of logistical and economic constraints; however, viewing the data at larger spatial scales might elucidate unforeseen relationships and patterns and facilitate regional management and conservation efforts. To address this growing need, an empirical model was created to predict reef fish abundance and species richness for the entire seascape using the relationship between the fish, benthic habitats, and GIS-derived topographic complexity metrics …

Three Friends Of Swiss-American Science: Louis Agassiz, Arnold Guyot, And Cornelius C. Felton, William A. Koelsch

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The year 2007 is a special one for those interested in Switzerland and in American science. It marks the bicentennial of the births of two Swiss scientists from Canton Neuchatel who came to America in the 1840s, the natural historian Jean Louis Rodophe Agassiz and the geographer-geologist Arnold Henri Guyot. It is also the bicentennial of the birth of the Harvard classicist Cornelius Conway Felton, who became Agassiz' closest American friend and his brother-in-law, and was the translator of Guyot' s first American lectures as well as the instigator of his first book. Agassiz was the eldest, born on 29 …

The Planting Of New Bilten, Duane H. Freitag, Robert A. Elmer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Almost forgotten now, the farming region of New Bilten in Wisconsin's Green County was once a pivotal part of the Swiss immigrant community there and deeply intertwined in the founding of the state's renowned cheese-making industry. The region is centered in a valley south of New Glarus once known as the Biltental (Bilten valley), where more than a dozen families from the Canton Glarus village of the same name settled as a group in July of 1847.

Effects Of Climate Change On Energy Production And Use In The United States, Thomas Wilbanks, Vatsal Bhatt, Daniel Bilello, Stanley Bull, James Ekmann, William Horak, Y. Joe Huang, Mark D. Levine, Michael J. Sale, David Schmalzer, Michael J. Scott Feb 2008

Effects Of Climate Change On Energy Production And Use In The United States, Thomas Wilbanks, Vatsal Bhatt, Daniel Bilello, Stanley Bull, James Ekmann, William Horak, Y. Joe Huang, Mark D. Levine, Michael J. Sale, David Schmalzer, Michael J. Scott

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Climate change is expected to have noticeable effects in the United States: a rise in average temperatures in most regions, changes in precipitation amounts and seasonal patterns in many regions, changes in the intensity and pattern of extreme weather events, and sea level rise. Some of these effects have clear implications for energy production and use. For instance, average warming can be expected to increase energy requirements for cooling and reduce energy requirements for warming. Changes in precipitation could affect prospects for hydropower, positively or negatively. Increases in storm intensity could threaten further disruptions of the sorts experienced in 2005 …

Middle Miocene Ice Sheet Dynamics, Deep‐Sea Temperatures, And Carbon Cycling: A Southern Ocean Perspective, Amelia E. Shevenell, James P. Kennett, David W. Lea Feb 2008

Middle Miocene Ice Sheet Dynamics, Deep‐Sea Temperatures, And Carbon Cycling: A Southern Ocean Perspective, Amelia E. Shevenell, James P. Kennett, David W. Lea

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Relative contributions of ice volume and temperature change to the global ∼1‰ δ18O increase at ∼14 Ma are required for understanding feedbacks involved in this major Cenozoic climate transition. A 3‐ma benthic foraminifer Mg/Ca record of Southern Ocean temperatures across the middle Miocene climate transition reveals ∼2 ± 2°C cooling (14.2–13.8 Ma), indicating that ∼70% of the increase relates to ice growth. Seawater δ18O, calculated from Mg/Ca and δ18O, suggests that at ∼15 Ma Antarctica's cryosphere entered an interval of apparent eccentricity‐paced expansion. Glaciations increased in intensity, revealing a central role for internal climate …

Historic Genetic Structuring And Paraphyly Within The Great-Tailed Grackle, Jeffrey M. Dacosta, Walter Wehtje, John Klicka

Ornithology Program (HRC)

The Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) and Boat-tailed Grackle (Q. major) are sister species that have expanded their ranges during historical times. This expansion has created an area of sympatry between these species in Texas and Louisiana, and between distinctive Great-tailed Grackle subspecies in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. We investigated the evolutionary histories of both species using mitochondrial DNA sequence data and modern phylogenetic methods. Our results reveal genetic structure within Great-tailed, but not Boat-tailed Grackles. Great-tailed Grackles are separated into two clades, but range expansion in the north has led to secondary contact …

Food Security Under Climate Change, Molly E. Brown, Chris C. Funk Feb 2008

Food Security Under Climate Change, Molly E. Brown, Chris C. Funk

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Some of the most profound and direct impacts of climate change over the next few decades will be on agricultural and food systems. On page 607 of this issue, Lobell et al. (1) show that increasing temperatures and declining precipitation over semiarid regions are likely to reduce yields for corn, wheat, rice, and other primary crops in the next two decades. These changes could have a substantial impact on global food security.

Since the 1990s, rising commodity prices and declining per capita cultivated area have led to decreases in food production, eroding food security in many communities …

Women And The Death Penalty: Racial Disparities And Differences, Harry Greenlee, Shelia P. Greenlee Feb 2008

Women And The Death Penalty: Racial Disparities And Differences, Harry Greenlee, Shelia P. Greenlee

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

The death penalty in America has been studied, discussed, and written about extensively. The vast majority of researchers, however, have focused their study of the death penalty, or capital punishment, on male prisoners. This article examines the data related to women on death row since 1973, with particular attention to similar problems that have been documented for men, while highlighting racial differences and/or racial disparities where found. The subjects were 157 women who received death row sentences, forty-nine women currently on death row, and the eleven women executed since 1973. The data demonstrated that some racial disparities do exist with …

Comparison Of Five Allopatric Fruit Fly Parasitoid Populations (Psyttalia Species) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) From Coffee Fields Using Morphometric And Molecular Methods, M. K. Billah, S. W. Kimani-Njogu, R. A. Wharton, J. B. Woolley, D. Masiga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Morphometric studies of five allopatric parasitoid populations (genus Psyttalia Walker) from coffee plantations in Cameroon (Nkolbisson), Ghana (Tafo) and Kenya (Rurima, Ruiru and Shimba Hills) and one non-coffee population (from Muhaka, Kenya) were compared with individuals of Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti), a species released in several biological control programmes in the Mediterranean Region since the 20th Century. Analyses of wing vein measurements showed the second submarginal cell of the fore wing and its adjoining veins had the heaviest principal component weights and served as the main contributing variables in the diagnostic differentiation of the populations. Two populations (Rurima and Ruiru) were …
