Extending Cfd Modeling To Near-Continuum Flows Using Enhanced Thermophysical Modeling, Abram E. Claycomb Mar 2008

Extending Cfd Modeling To Near-Continuum Flows Using Enhanced Thermophysical Modeling, Abram E. Claycomb

Theses and Dissertations

The constitutive relations found in traditional Navier-Stokes-based computational fluid dynamics solvers are known to be limited in altitude. The presence of nonequilibrium phenomena beyond what these methods are able to predict becomes more prevalent at higher altitudes, or increasing Knudsen number. The bulk viscosity, normally assumed to be zero in most computational fluid dynamics applications, is examined as a means of increasing the range of applicability of computational fluid dynamics. The bulk viscosity model used was from recent calculations available in the literature, from a new anisotropic potential energy surface, and is restricted to temperatures below 2000 K. The normal …

Four Types Of Knowledge Integration Management In Interdisciplinary Research On Cities And The Environment, Harald A. Mieg, Wilfried Endlicher, Hadia Köhler Mar 2008

Four Types Of Knowledge Integration Management In Interdisciplinary Research On Cities And The Environment, Harald A. Mieg, Wilfried Endlicher, Hadia Köhler

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This article provides an overview on different types of managing interdisciplinary knowledge integration in environmental urban research projects: 1. "synthesis-then", 2. "synthesis-online", 3. "synthesis-first", 4. "synthesis-as contracted". We present two projects in the context of urban ecology, in order to discuss two types of integration management in more detail. In the "synthesis-first" type of project management, interdisciplinary knowledge integration is organized through "syntheses groups" that represent the relevant perspectives on a case. We introduce "synthesis-first" using the Zurich North case study as an example. In the "synthesis-online" type of project management, interdisciplinary knowledge integration is wanted but occurs only occasionally. …

Entering The Virtual Teacher’S Lounge: The Efficacy Of Community In Computer-Mediated Communication Based Environments For Professional Educators, Randall S. Dunn Mar 2008

Entering The Virtual Teacher’S Lounge: The Efficacy Of Community In Computer-Mediated Communication Based Environments For Professional Educators, Randall S. Dunn

Faculty Dissertations

This study seeks to illuminate an understanding of naturally forming online communities of professional educators in the context of off-line communities. Essentially, an online discussion forum for educators is evaluated for the purpose of determining whether the forum provides a “space” conducive for the development of a community of professional educators as benchmarked against an understanding of offline community formation and existence. The foundational works of Ferdinand Tonnies, James Coleman, and Ray Oldenburg are used to develop 13 characteristics of community - as understood in the context of informal social communities as opposed to the types related to more formal …

The Effects Of Climate Change And Urbanization On The Runoff Of The Rock Creek Basin, Jon J. Franczyk Mar 2008

The Effects Of Climate Change And Urbanization On The Runoff Of The Rock Creek Basin, Jon J. Franczyk

Dissertations and Theses

Climate changes brought on by global warming are expected to have a significant affect on the Pacific Northwest hydrology during the 21st Century. Current research anticipates higher mean annual temperatures and an intensification of the hydrological cycle. This is of particular concern for highly urbanized basins, which are considered more vulnerable to changes in climate. Because the majority of previous studies have addressed the influences of either climate or urban land cover changes on runoff, there is a lack of research investigating the combined effect of these factors. The Rock Creek basin (RCB), located in the Portland, OR, metropolitan …

Space To Learn And Grow: Assessing The Capacity Of A Regional Early Care And Education System, Robert L. Fischer, Kristen Mikelbank, Claudia J. Coulton Mar 2008

Space To Learn And Grow: Assessing The Capacity Of A Regional Early Care And Education System, Robert L. Fischer, Kristen Mikelbank, Claudia J. Coulton

Faculty Scholarship

As communities across the United States work to meet the early care and education needs of young children, more research is needed to inform decision making at many levels. One key dimension of this is having clarity about the relative availability of care in light of demographic trends and geographic dispersion. The present study demonstrates a method to examine the capacity of early care programs to serve the children in a large urban county. The study takes stock of the existing early care system by comparing where the child care slots are and where the demand is—all at the neighborhood …

Introduction To Institutional Data Repositories Workshop, Michael Witt, Melissa Cragin

Libraries Research Publications

The course materials from a full-day, continuing education workshop given for the Chicago Metropolitan Library System that covered an introduction to institutional repositories, a rationale for sharing and archiving research data, an introduction to data curation, and related roles, resources, and approaches for librarians. Participants engaged in lab activities where they submitted sample datasets to two popular data-sharing websites, investigated and evaluated research data collections, and completed a prospectus to relate concepts from the workshop to their local institutions for future discussion and planning. Included are the presentation slides, a data repository prospectus, a list of data repositories, and a …

Chile: The Success Story Of A Developing Country, Emily Griffen '00, Esteban G. Lizano '01, Kathy-Ann Moe '02, Marta Siaba '01, Michelle Stone '01

The Park Place Economist

Chile is often cited as a target example for other countries in Latin America and Eastern Europe because of its success in economic restructuring, market liberalization, and stabilization. Deemed the “economic jaguar,” Chile has undergone substantial economic, social, and political transitions over the past decade. However, several problems still need to be addressed before Chile attains developed economic status.
