Digitization Initiatives: A Reconnaissance Of The Global Landscape, Marinus Swanepoel Apr 2008

Digitization Initiatives: A Reconnaissance Of The Global Landscape, Marinus Swanepoel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Digitization has become quite a buzzword around libraries and library organizations. Conferences, symposia and workshops on digitization are becoming more popular and many general conferences feature a technology or digitization track.

A factor contributing to the popularity of digitization is that the technology required for basic digitization is very affordable. It is therefore not uncommon to find an under funded enthusiast doing excellent work, making content available through a free hosting service on the Internet and using only a simple digital camera and/or scanner, bought for a couple of hundred dollars.

The proliferation of local digitization initiatives great and small …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Annotations In Improving The Listening Comprehension Of Intermediate Esl Learners, Ryan K. Rocque Apr 2008

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Annotations In Improving The Listening Comprehension Of Intermediate Esl Learners, Ryan K. Rocque

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to answer the age old question of what kind of input is best for ESL learners, but it approaches the question with a new perspective. There are many options when it comes to a choice of curriculum, both in terms of the method that is used and the materials that are available. Feature film is one important resource that has received increased attention in recent years. Curriculum specialists and teachers are incorporating various film clips into instruction to enhance a grammar point, to teach culture, or as a way to motivate learners. Yet adequate research does not …

Pacific Ocean And Cenozoic Evolution Of Climate, Mitchell Lyle, John Barron, Timothy J. Bralower, Matthew Huber, Annette Olivarez Lyle, A. Christina Ravelo, David K. Rea, Paul A. Wilson Apr 2008

Pacific Ocean And Cenozoic Evolution Of Climate, Mitchell Lyle, John Barron, Timothy J. Bralower, Matthew Huber, Annette Olivarez Lyle, A. Christina Ravelo, David K. Rea, Paul A. Wilson

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

The Pacific Ocean has played a major role in climate evolution throughout the Cenozoic (65–0 Ma). It is a fundamental component of global heat transport and circulation, the dominant locus of primary productivity, and, consequently, the largest reservoir for carbon exchange between the oceans and the atmosphere. A satisfactory understanding of the Cenozoic evolutionary history of the Pacific and its impact on global climate is currently data-limited. Nevertheless, the large dynamic range of Cenozoic conditions sets the stage to greatly expand our understanding of global climate and biogeochemical cycles. Past Earth “experiments” are particularly useful to understand interactions between climate …

Mapping The Evolution Of 'Food Deserts' In A Canadian City: Supermarket Accessibility In London, Ontario, 1961–2005, Kristian Larsen, Jason Gilliland

Geography & Environment Publications

Background: A growing body of research suggests that the suburbanization of food retailers in North America and the United Kingdom in recent decades has contributed to the emergence of urban 'food deserts', or disadvantaged areas of cities with relatively poor access to healthy and affordable food. This paper explores the evolution of food deserts in a mid-sized Canadian city (London, Ontario) by using a geographic information system (GIS) to map the precise locations of supermarkets in 1961 and 2005; multiple techniques of network analysis were used to assess changing levels of supermarket access in relation to neighbourhood location, socioeconomic characteristics, …

M.D. Snodgrass: The Founder Of The Alaska State Fair, Talis James Colberg Apr 2008

M.D. Snodgrass: The Founder Of The Alaska State Fair, Talis James Colberg

Arctic and Northern Studies

This dissertation presents the life of M.D. Snodgrass as an example of how the Alaskan frontier transformed an unremarkable middle aged migrant into a socially prominent civic leader. The life of M.D. Snodgrass exemplifies how American frontier society provides ordinary people with exceptional opportunities to flourish and prosper. One of the end results of Snodgrass's taking advantage of Alaskan frontier opportunity was the Alaska State Fair. The dissertation divides the life of Snodgrass into four phases with the following findings: (1) The first thirty-one years of Snodgrass's life was spent outside of Alaska. His early life in Kansas demonstrates: the …

The University Of Alaska: How Is It Doing?, Theodore Kassier, Alexandra Hill Apr 2008

The University Of Alaska: How Is It Doing?, Theodore Kassier, Alexandra Hill

ISER Reports

Recent reports on higher education in the U.S. say it’s in trouble— that it’s too expensive, doesn’t offer enough need-based aid, isn’t educating people for today’s jobs, doesn’t demand enough of instructors or students, and isn’t sufficiently accountable to policymakers and taxpayers.1 Is the University of Alaska (UA)—the state’s only public university —offering a good, affordable education for Alaskans? This paper looks at that question. It first presents the available data on various measures and then summarizes successes and continuing challenges for UA. It ends with a discussion of how UA and the state are addressing higher-education issues and what …

Molecular Identification And Analysis Of Treponematosis (Syphilis, Bejel, Yaws, Or Pinta) In Ancient Mummified Remains From Northern Chile And Southern Peru, Michelle Kaye Apr 2008

Molecular Identification And Analysis Of Treponematosis (Syphilis, Bejel, Yaws, Or Pinta) In Ancient Mummified Remains From Northern Chile And Southern Peru, Michelle Kaye

Anthropology

The sequencing of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis, and the identification of a family of 12 genes with sequence similarity that allows scientists to distinguish between treponemal subtypes has opened up a new line of inquiry for biological anthropologists. This research contributes genetic evidence of pre-contact treponematosis in the Americas; by combining osteological and molecular evidence with data on environment and cultural practices, it also furthers our knowledge of human-pathogen interaction. This research assessed the presence of treponematosis, a bacterial spirochete, in the DNA of skeletal and mummified human remains from northern Chilean cemeteries dating from …

Lingitx Haa Sateeyi, We Who Are Tlingit: Contemporary Tlingit Identity And The Ancestral Relationship To The Landscape, Vivian F. Martindale Apr 2008

Lingitx Haa Sateeyi, We Who Are Tlingit: Contemporary Tlingit Identity And The Ancestral Relationship To The Landscape, Vivian F. Martindale

Theses (Unassigned)

Divergent views on the Tlingit ancestral relationship to the landscape of Southeast Alaska often leads to conflicts between Western-orientated government agencies, public entities, and the Tlingit people themselves. To better understand this subject, I collected nine personal narratives from research participants from within the Tlingit nation. The narratives provide insight into the dynamics at the intersection of conflicting worldviews, and the role this plays in shaping contemporary Tlingit identity. The results of exploring these diverging worldviews has illuminated three factors influencing contemporary Tlingit identity: the loss and struggle with maintaining the Lingit language, implementation of subsistence regulations and resultant conflicts, …

The Development And Application Of Stable Oxygen And Hydrogen Isotope Analyses Of Chironomidae (Diptera) As Indicators Of Past Environmental Change, Yiming Wang Apr 2008

The Development And Application Of Stable Oxygen And Hydrogen Isotope Analyses Of Chironomidae (Diptera) As Indicators Of Past Environmental Change, Yiming Wang

Geosciences

Environmental change continues to be of increasing interest to scientists in all disciplines, and there is a paramount need to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of environmental change in the past to better predict the future. A challenge associated with interpreting past change is a lack of reliable proxies to infer past environmental conditions preserved in the fossil record. My research has been dedicated to developing techniques associated with analyzing the stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition (delta18O and deltaD) of subfossil chironomid (Chironomidea: Diptera) headcapsules (primarily composed of chitin) preserved in lake sediments as a new proxy …

Perspectives On The Dynamic Human-Walrus Relationship, Martin D. Robards Apr 2008

Perspectives On The Dynamic Human-Walrus Relationship, Martin D. Robards

Biological Sciences

Changes in sea ice conditions have direct bearing on ice-associated species such as Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens), which are an important component of subsistence for Alaska Native communities in the Bering Sea. I explore the relationship between walrus, sea ice, and Alaska Native subsistence at Diomede, Gambell, and Savoonga between 1952 and 2004 to better understand walrus ecology and subsistence under different climatic regimes. I then consider how the inability to reliably and regularly count walrus and other ice-associated pinnipeds in this dynamic environment challenges effective management of walrus and subsistence under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). However, …

Productivity Spillovers In Healthcare: Evidence From The Treatment Of Heart Attacks, Amitabh Chandra, Douglas O. Staiger Apr 2008

Productivity Spillovers In Healthcare: Evidence From The Treatment Of Heart Attacks, Amitabh Chandra, Douglas O. Staiger

Dartmouth Scholarship

A large literature in medicine documents variation across areas in the use of surgical treatments that is unrelated to outcomes. Observers of this phenomena have invoked “flat of the curve medicine” to explain these facts, and have advocated for reductions in spending in high-use areas. In contrast, we develop a simple Roy model of patient treatment choice with productivity spillovers that can generate the empirical facts. Our model predicts that high-use areas will have higher returns to surgery, better outcomes among patients most appropriate for surgery, and worse outcomes among patients least appropriate for surgery, while displaying no relationship between …

Downscaling Thermal Infrared Radiance For Subpixel Land Surface Temperature Retrieval, Desheng Liu, Ruiliang Pu Apr 2008

Downscaling Thermal Infrared Radiance For Subpixel Land Surface Temperature Retrieval, Desheng Liu, Ruiliang Pu

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Land surface temperature (LST) retrieved from satellite thermal sensors often consists of mixed temperature components. Retrieving subpixel LST is therefore needed in various environmental and ecological studies. In this paper, we developed two methods for downscaling coarse resolution thermal infrared (TIR) radiance for the purpose of subpixel temperature retrieval. The first method was developed on the basis of a scale-invariant physical model on TIR radiance. The second method was based on a statistical relationship between TIR radiance and land cover fraction at high spatial resolution. The two methods were applied to downscale simulated 990-m ASTER TIR data to 90-m resolution. …

Active Sensor Reflectance Measurements Of Corn Nitrogen Status And Yield Potential, Fernando Solari, John Shanahan, Richard B. Ferguson, James S. Schepers, Anatoly A. Gitelson Apr 2008

Active Sensor Reflectance Measurements Of Corn Nitrogen Status And Yield Potential, Fernando Solari, John Shanahan, Richard B. Ferguson, James S. Schepers, Anatoly A. Gitelson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Active sensor reflectance assessments of corn (Zea mays L.) canopy N status are advocated to direct variable N applications and improve N use efficiency (NUE). Our goals were to determine: (i) growth stage and (ii) sensor vegetation index with greatest sensitivity in assessing N status and grain yield. Variable crop N was generated by supplying N at different amounts and times in three field studies. Chlorophyll meter (CM) and sensor data were gathered at two vegetative (V11 and V15) and two reproductive (R1 and R3) growth stages, using the Crop Circle sensor that measures reflectance in visible (590 nm) …
