Moving Melodies: Contemporary Music Culture Of Mongolian Nomads And Opportunities For Contextualization, Erica Marin Logan
Moving Melodies: Contemporary Music Culture Of Mongolian Nomads And Opportunities For Contextualization, Erica Marin Logan
Masters Theses
There are many obstacles to sharing Christ with nomadic peoples. Obstacles include distance of travel from one family group to another, the mobility of these family groups, the finances and investment to locate the families every season, the lack of fellowship and discipleship materials for those that do become Believers, and the peer pressure that these Believers face in the midst of this lack. What resources can be offered to fill this gap? How can the Gospel be communicated in a relevant and engaging way to a people group that is spread out across hundreds of miles, resistant to sedentary …

At the University of Connecticut, we have been enticing graduate students to join graduate student trainers to learn how to answer the following questions and improve the breadth of their research: Do you need to find articles published outside your primary discipline? What are some seminal articles in your field? Have you ever wanted to know who cited an article you wrote? We are participating in Elsevier's Student Ambassador Program (SAmP) in which graduate students train their peers on "citation searching" research using Scopus and Web of Science, two tremendous citation databases. We are in the fourth semester of these …

Lost In Cyberspace: A Call For New Legislation To Fill The Black Hole In Information Privacy Law Following Pisciotta V. Old National Bancorp, Elena N. Vranas-Liveris
Seventh Circuit Review
This Note discusses Pisciotta v. Old National Bancorp, a case decided by the Seventh Circuit, which dealt with the following issue for the first time: whether the costs of credit monitoring spent by consumers whose personal information was wrongfully accessed through a database security breach but who were not victims of identity theft or fraud are compensable damages and thus recoverable under a negligence or breach of contract action against the database owner. The Seventh Circuit was rather definitive in its ruling that the plaintiffs had not suffered the requisite harm to place liability on the database owner, thus …

We present results from a 15-year 10-member warm season (March–September) hindcast ensemble of maximum and minimum surface air temperatures and precipitation in southeast USA. The hindcasts are derived from the Florida State University/Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies Global Spectral Model (FSU/COAPS GSM) and downscaled using both the FSU/COAPS Nested Regional Spectral Model (NRSM) and a statistical downscaling method based on stochastic weather generator techniques. We additionally consider statistical bias correction of the dynamical model output. Basic descriptive statistics indicate that the bias-corrected and statistically downscaled data reduce the FSU/COAPS GSM bias considerably in terms of basic climatology. Statistics describing the …

A Study Of Indian Print Exports To The United States, Karthik Narayan Ravi
Theses
Offshoring is the reality of globalization. According to a survey conducted by trendstowatchgraphics.com, the percentage of American print providers who are worried about US print buyers offshoring their print requirements increased from 1% in 1995 to 7% in 2005. According to a survey conducted by the Graphics Arts Technical Foundation, 40% of the printers in the US think that their current customers are also seeking out offshore printers for their printing needs. According to UN Comtrade, exports of printed matter to the US from China in 2005 amounted to $722 million, and exports of printed matter to the US from …
Spatial Dimensions Of The Orlando Destination Region, Shaul Krakover, Youcheng Wang
Spatial Dimensions Of The Orlando Destination Region, Shaul Krakover, Youcheng Wang
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article aims to empirically examine the concept of a destination region using a case study approach. Two conflicting hypotheses are considered for the spatial structure of tourism in Orlando's destination region: the bubble pattern vis-à-vis a dispersed pattern. Locational concentration and the industrial mix of Orlando's tourist-related firms are examined by analyzing data revealing their location and business specialization. Findings reveal the concentration of the accommodation and dining firms near the theme parks area in a bubble-like pattern. Conversely, smaller scale attractions, convention services, and visitor and professional services tend to locate in high proportions outside of the core …
Ports Of Slavery, Ports Of Freedom: How Slaves Used Northern Seaports’ Maritime Industry To Escape And Create Trans-Atlantic Identities, 1713-1783, Charles Foy
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
This dissertation examines and reconstructs the lives of fugitive slaves who used the maritime industries in New York, Philadelphia and Newport to achieve freedom. It focuses on slaves during the period between 1713, the end of Queen Anne’s War, and 1783, the end of the American Revolution. While the study’s primary focus is on slavery in three port cities, it employs a broad geographic approach to consider how enslaved individuals in rural areas surrounding New York, Philadelphia and Newport, as well as slaves in more distant regions, used the maritime industry in northern port cities to escape slavery. Maritime work …

Security Policy, State Power, And Professional Resistance: Libraries And The Usa Patriot Act, Ahna Minge
Political Science Honors Projects
Historically, national emergencies have prompted the US government to limit private rights in the interest of security. The librarian profession opposed such limitations in the USA PATRIOT Act because it contradicted their professional values. This paper examines how professional identity affects the interaction between librarians and the law. I gathered evidence through in-depth interviews with Twin Cities librarians. The paper concludes that librarian practices stemming from professional values hinder the full implementation of national security policy but do not lead to absolute defiance. This project illuminates the importance of professional groups as sources of private resistance to national security policy.
Integrating Across Life-History Stages: Consequences Of Natal Habitat Effects On Dispersal, Michael F. Benard, Shannon J. Mccauley
Integrating Across Life-History Stages: Consequences Of Natal Habitat Effects On Dispersal, Michael F. Benard, Shannon J. Mccauley
Biological Sciences
Ecological and evolutionary processes are affected by forces acting at both local and regional scales, yet our understanding of how these scales interact has remained limited. These processes are fundamentally linked through individuals that develop as juveniles in one environment and then either remain in the natal habitat or disperse to new environments. Empirical studies in a diverse range of organisms have demonstrated that the conditions experienced in the natal habitat can have profound effects on the adult phenotype. This environmentally induced phenotypic variation can in turn affect the probability that an individual will disperse to a new environment and …

The Down Home Café, R. Edward Bashaw, Joan Brumm, Larry R. Davis
Faculty Publications - The LeMoyne Smith School of Business
The Down Home Cafés, a profitable 23-unit chain of family-oriented restaurants in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, have had slowly declining same-store revenue growth during the past three years. Although research suggests that patrons give the Down Home Café high marks on food quality and value, growth may have been hurt by the lack of ambiance and brand image. Research indicates they are in target consumers consideration sets, although perhaps not a first choice. In order to generate growth, the executive team is focusing on ideas to generate repeat business and increase the underperforming dinner and weekend meal occasions. Down Home's …

"From Troubled Ground To Common Ground": The Locust Grove African- American Cemetery Restoration Project: A Case Study Of Service-Learning And Community History, Steven B. Burg
Project Summaries
This article chronicles a movement to restore Shippensburg, Pennsylvania's Locust Grove Cemetery, a historic African-American burial ground. The cemetery faced persistent troubles exacerbated by changing demographics in the surrounding neighborhood, its caretakers' limited resources, and the community's history of racial discrimination. Beginning in 2003, Shippensburg University applied history students assisted with research, grant writing, and interpretative materials. By 2005, a community coalition formed that built on the students' efforts, ultimately mobilizing the resources needed to finish the restoration. This case study illustrates the complex dynamics of a community preservation campaign and ways Public History programs can support such efforts.
How To Make Unethical Decisions, Andrew Sikula Sr., John Sikula
How To Make Unethical Decisions, Andrew Sikula Sr., John Sikula
Management Faculty Research
People make decisions and solve problems in a variety of ways. Oftentimes, little if any thought goes into choice selection. Sometimes, even very important decisions are made without serious contemplation of potential alternatives and their consequences. Many different tools/techniques and rationales are utilized in problem solving and decision making with little or no regard to ethical judgment and/ or aftermaths. Some ways of making choices are worse than others when using pity parameters. This article discusses commonly used but ethically unsound methods of making selections. Later in the writing, appropriate standards and benchmarks for determining ethical action will be presented.

The Girls Who Had To Grow Up: Reflections On Motherhood And Dual Identity In Lewis Carroll's Wonderland And J.M. Barrie's Neverland, Theresa Fitzpatrick
The Girls Who Had To Grow Up: Reflections On Motherhood And Dual Identity In Lewis Carroll's Wonderland And J.M. Barrie's Neverland, Theresa Fitzpatrick
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
My thesis explores the world of the "imaginary" in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and its connection to the world of the "mundane" experienced by the typical Victorian housewife and mother. Both are intimately connected within the texts, primarily in the characters' dual roles as dictated by the gendered expectations of Victorian society. While in the imaginary world, both Alice and Wendy experience mini-versions of their future lives. They exist as girl and mother simultaneously. Carroll, by creating a hostile environment, grotesque motherimages, and a confused, argumentative Alice, shows a negative portrait of motherhood, …

Standardized Testing: Are The Benefits Really There?, Alan D. Foster
Standardized Testing: Are The Benefits Really There?, Alan D. Foster
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The proponents of standardized high-stakes testing argue that this type of assessment will and does promote increased knowledge acquisition by students. The opponents of this testing claim any apparent knowledge increase as measured by improvements in tests scores are mainly due to teaching to the test. This study was done to determine whether high-stakes testing does in fact improve the knowledge of the students. Data from two national college entrance examinations were collected and reviewed changes over time as reference to knowledge improvements. Test scores from three state high-stakes tests were collected (California, Texas, and Colorado). The scores from the …

This Bridge Called Imagination: On Reading The Arab Image Foundation And Its Collection, Dore Bowen
Faculty Publications
This essay examines the benefits and disadvantages of using imagination as a method of historical research in the archive. Employing Jean-Paul Sartre's notion of “image-consciousness” in The Psychology of Imagination, imagination is defined and explored as a form of perception based upon temporal absence or suspension. This method is then discussed in relation to the exhibition “Not Given: Talking of and Around Photographs of Arab Women” (2006), curated by the author with artist Isabelle Massu. The installation was assembled with the cooperation of the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and traveled from Marseille (2005-06) to San Francisco (2007). The author …
Cardiac Resuscitation: Examining Rural Heartland Development Through An Ecological Lens, Jay D. Anderson
Cardiac Resuscitation: Examining Rural Heartland Development Through An Ecological Lens, Jay D. Anderson
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Throughout southwest Iowa, prime farm land is being sold and then purchased by local real estate developers. These developers are creating housing clusters throughout the countryside, especially in the rural Loess Hills area. These housing clusters have similar covenant restrictions imposed by the developers, but few if any address larger and more critical architectural, social, environmental and ecological issues. Recently one of these developers purchased some land from my family for this very reason. Knowing what will happen to this land, I chose to devote my efforts in order to provide a better, more eco-friendly solution to the inevitable consequences …

Hazard Adaptations Along The Ohio River: A Case Study Of Bushman's Lake, Clark County, Indiana, Jennifer L. Lathem
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hazard researchers define a hazard as a threat to people and their belongings (Cutter 2001). An adaptation, for the purposes of this research, is any alteration, physical or behavioral, made by a person in which the person is better able to survive in their "hazardous" natural environment. The challenge facing individuals and communities is the ability to adapt to these hazards so as to continue with normal everyday life. People living near a waterway are faced with flooding, which becomes a hazard when it alters everyday social structures. The purpose of this study is to identify flood hazard adaptations in …
Integration Of Remote Sensing And Census Data For Land-Use And Land Cover Classification And Population Estimation In Indianapolis, Indiana, Guiying Li
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increasing population and economic growth has resulted in rapid urban expansion in the past decades. Timely and accurately mapping urban land-use and land-cover (LULC) and associated population dist1ibution are often required for many applications such as urban management and planning, and environmental monitoring and assessment. Although many techniques have been developed, urban LULC classification is still a challenge based on remote sensing data. This research explored the integration of Landsat ETM+ image and census data for improving urban LULC classification accuracy, focusing on the distinction of different densities of residential use. The housing data were examined for use at three …

Brunswick Me: De-Militarizing The Bnas, Anne Holland, Brett Richardson, Richard Barringer
Planning
Closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station in 2011 will have profound economic impacts on the entire mid-coast Maine region of Maine, with an estimated loss of 6,500 jobs and $330 million annual income. Throughout the Base Realignment and Closure process, Brunswick, the region, and the State of Maine followed federal rules and developed the federally-funded Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) to plan for reuse of the 3300 acre base. In its planning process, the BLRA adhered to a number of well thought-out Guiding Principles, including the use of extensive public participation and the consideration of “smart growth” principles and …
Human–Wildlife Conflict And Gender In Protected Area Borderlands: A Case Study Of Costs, Perceptions, And Vulnerabilities From Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal), India, Monica V. Ogra
Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Human–wildlife conflict (HWC) is a growing problem for communities located at the borders of protected areas. Such conflicts commonly take place as crop-raiding events and as attack by wild animals, among other forms. This paper uses a feminist political ecology approach to examine these two problems in an agricultural village located at the border of Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand (formerly Uttaranchal), India. Specifically, it investigates the following three questions: What are the “visible” and “hidden” costs of such conflict with wildlife? To what extent are these costs differentially borne by men and women? How do villagers perceive any such …
