Gender Difference In Transformational Leadership: A Comparison Of Liberian Male And Female Leadership Styles From 1986 Through 2006, Anthony Ansumana Kanneh Jun 2008

Gender Difference In Transformational Leadership: A Comparison Of Liberian Male And Female Leadership Styles From 1986 Through 2006, Anthony Ansumana Kanneh

Theses and Graduate Projects

The goal of this study was to investigate the leadership styles of Liberian male and female leaders by examining five hypotheses, as measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ: Form 5X; Bass & Avolio, 1999) administered to 119 leaders and 360 raters. The samples investigated were selected from Liberian male and female leaders in the State of Minnesota and the Republic of Liberia. Few of the transformational leadership dimensions as measured by MLQ were found to be positively and significantly correlated with leadership behavior of both genders of Liberians. Overall, the results revealed no significant differences between the genders, in …

The Meaning And Means Of Inclusion For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Qualitative Study Of Educators’ And Parents’ Attitudes, Beliefs, And Decision-Making Strategies, Jenine M. Sansosti Jun 2008

The Meaning And Means Of Inclusion For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Qualitative Study Of Educators’ And Parents’ Attitudes, Beliefs, And Decision-Making Strategies, Jenine M. Sansosti

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The practice of inclusion, and even the term itself, have been the subject of controversy over the last several decades and it appears that "inclusion" may look very different depending upon the student, educator, and setting (Fuchs & Fuchs, 1994). Recently, placement in general education settings has become a dominant service delivery model for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), (Simpson & Myles, 1998), yet Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with ASD tend to be the most often disputed and often contain procedural errors, including failure to consider the Least Restrictive Mandate (Yell et al., 2003).

This study represents …

The Mexican American Sobador, Convergent Disease Discourse, And Pain Validation In South Texas, Servando Z. Hinojosa Jun 2008

The Mexican American Sobador, Convergent Disease Discourse, And Pain Validation In South Texas, Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper examines how Mexican American sobadores (folk manual therapists) provide needed health services to South Texas residents. Operating in a region with high levels of workplace injuries, chronic disease, and low levels of insuredness, sobadores offer a kind of attention that is appealing in terms of cost, accessibility, and cultural familiarity. The latter is particularly evident with respect to two factors: convergent ethnophysiological discourse and pain validation. Injured people can approach the sobador with minimal trepidation, in part, because sobadores and clients have shared ways of talking about the body and disease. Clients can also expect that sobadores will …

Faculty Publications

We explored the role of aquatic systems in the global N cycle using a spatially distributed, within‐basin, aquatic nitrogen (N) removal model, implemented within the Framework for Aquatic Modeling in the Earth System (FrAMES‐N). The model predicts mean annual total N (TN) removal by small rivers (with drainage areas from 2.6–1000 km2), large rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, using a 30′ latitude × longitude river network to route and process material from continental source areas to the coastal zone. Mean annual aquatic TN removal (for the mid‐1990s time period) is determined by the distributions of aquatic TN inputs, mean annual hydrological …

How Can Elementary Educators Use Multicultural Literature To Help Prepare Students For Life As A Global Citizen?, Kathryn Oleksy

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore ways in which elementary educators can use multicultural literature to help students learn about the world they live in. The study was based on the implementation of a unit in which students were introduced to four countries using multicultural literature. Students then learned about the culture, citizens, geography, history and so forth through multiple strategies and approaches to enhance the learning process. Upon completion of the unit, student writing samples and exit interviews when compared with pre-unit interviews, revealed students had made significant gains in relating to people in other countries as …

Articulating Identity: Refining Postcolonial And Whiteness Perspectives On Race Within Communication Studies, Gordon Alley-Young Jun 2008

Articulating Identity: Refining Postcolonial And Whiteness Perspectives On Race Within Communication Studies, Gordon Alley-Young

Publications and Research

This paper juxtaposes postcolonial and whiteness scholarship to identify gaps and clarify influences on critical race scholarship within communication studies. This paper considers the multiplicity of each perspective and identifies the focus on race and the body as communicative texts as a linkage that unites the three perspectives. How each perspective informs a communicative understanding of race is explored through the constructs of Cartesian dualism, performance, and the gaze. The paper concludes with suggestions for future directions for interrogating race within the communication discipline, including a consideration of how white privilege is extended to and assumed by individuals who are …

The Autoethnographic Call: Current Considerations And Possible Futures, Kendall Smith-Sullivan Jun 2008

The Autoethnographic Call: Current Considerations And Possible Futures, Kendall Smith-Sullivan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the increase of personal narratives in the past several decades, particularly the autoethnographic approach. The project begins with a historical contextualization of personal writing and autoethnography in relation to the crisis of representation and other diverse socio-political shifts. One outcome of these cultural transitions was a proliferation of illness narratives, narrative therapy, therapeutic writing, and narrative health communication. Also included in this research are data from interviews with emerging autoethnographers and participant observation that occurred at the Third International Qualitative Inquiry Congress. The conference served as prism through which to view qualitative scholarship as a whole, as …

Components Of Delivered Fuel Prices In Alaska, Meghan Wilson, Ben Saylor, Nick Szymoniak, Steve Colt, Ginny Fay Jun 2008

Components Of Delivered Fuel Prices In Alaska, Meghan Wilson, Ben Saylor, Nick Szymoniak, Steve Colt, Ginny Fay

ISER Reports

This is a systematic analysis of components of delivered fuel prices in Alaska. Data for the analysis include limited publicly available Alaska fuel prices (fall 2007 prices), as well as information the authors gathered from extensive interviews with fuel retailers and transporters, communities, and agencies. We identify the individual components of delivered fuel costs—including world price of crude oil, refining costs, transportation costs, storage and distribution costs, taxes and financing costs—and investigate how these factors influence the final retail prices of home heating fuel and gasoline. Transportation, storage, and distribution costs appear to be the most variable factors driving the …

Publications

Phase II of Florida’s Ocean and Coastal Economics Report was prepared for the Florida Oceans and Coastal Council and funded under contract #RM077 by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The Phase I report of Florida’s Ocean and Coastal Economies provided basic information that the NOEP compiles for all coastal states about employment, wages and output of those activities located geographically along Florida’s shoreline (Coastal Economy) as well as those activities directly dependent upon the oceans (Ocean Economy). That information not only described the status and trends of Florida’s Coastal and Ocean Economy but allowed comparison to economies in other …

Bed Assignment: A Nurse's Call, Sandra L. Prince

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this Integrated Thesis Project is to develop a nursing unit based bed assignment procedural guideline. Currently general care patients admitted to the hospital are assigned to a bed through a centralized bed assignment process that does not involve nursing input. The nursing unit based bed assignment process is developed using the assumption that nurses will select the right bed for the right patient the first time with consideration given to patient's individual needs and staffing on the unit. A nursing unit based bed assignment process is anticipated to increase satisfaction for patient, family and nurse. Jean Watson's …

Life On The Campaign Trail: The Political Anthropology Of Local Politics, E.J Ford

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This document is an ethnographic account of one researcher's experience during an election season spent with one candidate. The document considers the history of political anthropology as a subfield of anthropology, the deployment of ideology and hegemony as theoretical concepts, and includes a brief history of Tampa and Hillsborough County politics. The document attempts to make connections between the practical necessities of campaigning, with reference to the processual approach of examining micro-political process, and theoretical issues related to the subject of political anthropology, notably the concepts of ideology, hegemony, and the subject of elites in human social organization.

Addressing Disparities In Health And Health Care: Issues For Reform, Marsha Lillie-Blanton Jun 2008

Addressing Disparities In Health And Health Care: Issues For Reform, Marsha Lillie-Blanton

Health Policy and Management Congressional Testimonies

The testimony focuses on the role of health insurance in reducing disparities in health care and in health status, two distinct but related challenges. Disparities in health care – whether in insurance coverage, access, or quality of care – are one of many factors producing inequalities in health status in the U.S. Eliminating disparities in health among segments of the population (e.g., by race/ethnicity, education, income, gender, geographic location) was one of two overarching goals of Healthy People 2010, the federal government’s blueprint for what it wanted to achieve in health by the end of this decade.

Leeches Of The Snake River In Idaho And Oregon: Paleodrainage Implications Of Mooreobdella Microstoma, Peter Hovingh, William H. Clark, John Keebaugh

Western North American Naturalist

Leech species of the mid-Snake River of Idaho and Oregon are described, and the distribution of the extant leech Mooreobdella microstoma Moore in the Snake River paleodrainage is delineated. Samples were collected from aquatic surveys in the Snake River using suction dredging by the Idaho Power Company and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation between 1995 and 2006. Supplementing these surveys, opportunities were provided for leech identification in water-quality analyses in Arizona and Wyoming and in other surveys in California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Eight species of leeches were found in the Snake River surveys. Erpobdella parva Moore was the most widely …

A Review Of The Genus Chortophaga (Orthoptera: Acrididae) Among Nebraska Populations: Questioning The Validity Of Chortophaga Australior Rehn And Hebard, Mathew L. Brust, W. Wyatt Hoback, Robert J. Wright Jun 2008

A Review Of The Genus Chortophaga (Orthoptera: Acrididae) Among Nebraska Populations: Questioning The Validity Of Chortophaga Australior Rehn And Hebard, Mathew L. Brust, W. Wyatt Hoback, Robert J. Wright

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Chortophaga australior Rehn and Hebard (Orthoptera: Acrididae) is considered a species distinct from Chortophaga viridifasciata (DeGeer). Collections across Nebraska have shown that the characters used to separate these two species are inconsistent and that the average state of these characters appears to be related to the time of the season during which the adults are collected. Until further study clarifies the status of C. australior, we suggest that its specific status be considered questionable.
