The Polar Coordinate System, Alisa Favinger Jul 2008

The Polar Coordinate System, Alisa Favinger

Department of Mathematics: Master of Arts in Teaching, Exam Expository Papers

Representing a position in a two-dimensional plane can be done several ways. It is taught early in Algebra how to represent a point in the Cartesian (or rectangular) plane. In this plane a point is represented by the coordinates (x, y), where x tells the horizontal distance from the origin and y the vertical distance. The polar coordinate system is an alternative to this rectangular system. In this system, instead of a point being represented by (x, y) coordinates, a point is represented by (r, θ) where r represents the length of a straight line from the point to the …

A Face Can Launch A Thousand Shares—And An 0.80% Abnormal Return, Matteo P. Arena, John S. Howe Jul 2008

A Face Can Launch A Thousand Shares—And An 0.80% Abnormal Return, Matteo P. Arena, John S. Howe

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper we examine the market reaction—price and volume—to the appearance of a firm in the Who’s News column of The Wall Street Journal. We differentiate between those firms whose articles are accompanied by a picture of an executive and a control set of firms whose articles on the same day are not accompanied by a picture. The results show a more pronounced market reaction to the “cum picture” articles, consistent with the incomplete information theory of Merton [1987] and the heuristic-based familiarity hypothesis. There is no evidence of significant long-run abnormal performance for the sample firms.

On Cornel Sandvoss's Fans: The Mirror Of Consumption, Barry King Jul 2008

On Cornel Sandvoss's Fans: The Mirror Of Consumption, Barry King

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Recent theorisations of fandom show a tendency towards the sequestration of fan activity and experience as if occurring outside, or at least comfortably on sabbatical from, commodity relationships. This is an old theme. John Fiske's claims for semiotic democracy and Henry Jenkins's celebration of the anarchic pleasures of textual poaching both tended, despite their internal differences of emphasis, to place fandom outside of the commodification process that is central to capitalist relations of cultural production. Matt Hills, one of the "new wave" of fan theorists drawn upon in the text under review still strives to address the dialectic …

Which States Enter Into Treaties, And Why?, Eric A. Posner, Thomas J. Miles Jul 2008

Which States Enter Into Treaties, And Why?, Eric A. Posner, Thomas J. Miles

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Treaties are the primary source of international law. But little is known about which countries enter into treaties, which forms the treaties take, and which subjects they address. We present an exploratory analysis of a unique dataset of roughly 50,000 treaties ratified since 1946. We hypothesize that states enter treaties in order to obtain public goods but that the transaction costs of negotiating and enforcing treaties also limit the value of treaties. Simple predictions are that larger and richer states should benefit more from cooperation: therefore, they should be parties to more treaties. Older, less corrupt, and (again) larger states …

Dipl 4717/6717 Conflict And Forced Population Movement In Africa, Assefaw Bariagaber Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

Over the decades following independence from colonial rule, conflicts and the ensuing forced population movements in Africa have spread dramatically. The euphoria of independence from colonial powers immediately gave way to corrupt dictatorships, political oppression and instability, and endless conflicts. The early optimism, shared by almost all the newly liberated peoples, was replaced by uncertainty and even hopelessness. Indeed, at present, some find themselves in a political, social, and economic quagmire from which they could not extricate themselves, and were better-off at the time of independence when compared to the present. It is also true that there were a few …

Hierarchy Or Heterarchy? Actors Of Medieval International Society At The Council Of Constance And The Peace Of Augsburg, Sarah Bania-Dobyns Jul 2008

Hierarchy Or Heterarchy? Actors Of Medieval International Society At The Council Of Constance And The Peace Of Augsburg, Sarah Bania-Dobyns

Global and Public Affairs: Faculty Scholarship

IR research on medieval international society has been mixed. On the one hand, interest in “neo-medievalism” has led to some discussion of international relations of the medieval era. Hedley Bull first used the term to refer to a simultaneous trend towards cosmopolitanism as well as fragmentation (Bull 1977), so it is in this sense in which scholars like Ruggie (1983, for example) have used the term. However, much of this research has merely touched upon ideas of medieval international society, and not upon medieval international society itself and what it has to offer contemporary debates.

Subjects Of Sovereignty: Indigeneity, The Revenue Rule, And Juridics Of Failed Consent, Audra Simpson Jul 2008

Subjects Of Sovereignty: Indigeneity, The Revenue Rule, And Juridics Of Failed Consent, Audra Simpson

Law and Contemporary Problems

Simpson examines the way in which indigeneity and sovereignty have been conflated with savagery, lawlessness, and smuggling in recent history. The national problem of indigenous smuggling is reconstructed here as it was portrayed in the public eye, largely via the media, and then through conflict-of-laws cases concerning the interpretation and application of the revenue rule. Simpson further discusses economic activities that express indigenous cultural and historical practice and that reflect a larger set of socio-economic conditions.

Recent Developments In Transnational Human Rights Litigation: A Postscript To Torture As Tort, Francois Larocque Jul 2008

Recent Developments In Transnational Human Rights Litigation: A Postscript To Torture As Tort, Francois Larocque

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Torture as Tort: Comparative Perspectives on the Development of Transnational Tort Litigation marked the first in-depth inquiry by non-US scholars into transnational human rights litigation. In this article, the author canvasses a range of new developments in the field since its publication in 2001. Of special note are five transnational human rights claims, decided after September 11, that were brought in Canadian and British courts. The author mines these cases for insights into other important developments involving the American Alien Tort Statute (Part I) corporate complicity in human rights abuses (Part II) the expansion of common law jurisdiction to include …

Law's Complexity: A Primer, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The legal system. It rolls easily off the tongues of lawyers like a single word - the legal system - as if we all know what it means. But what is the legal system? How does it behave? What are its boundaries? What is its input and output? How will it look in one year? In ten years? How should we use it to make change in some other aspect of social life? Why do answers to these questions make the legal system seem so complex? Would assembling a cogent, descriptively accurate theory of what makes the legal system complex …

Planning Or Warfare: On Urban Allocation Of Land, Syed A. Samad Jul 2008

Planning Or Warfare: On Urban Allocation Of Land, Syed A. Samad

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study reviewed the subject of the urban allocation of land, and mainly drew from two major works: Vernon (1960) and Vreeker, de Groot, and Verhoef (2007). The two major works were analyzed along with other relevant issues such as urban multifunctional land use, clustering of firms, and empirical implications. Recommendations regarding the urban allocation of land were then presented.

El Dia De Los Muertos, The Death And Rebirth Of The Environment Movement, Eileen Gauna Jul 2008

El Dia De Los Muertos, The Death And Rebirth Of The Environment Movement, Eileen Gauna

Faculty Scholarship

In 2004, in response to an article titled Death of Environmentalism, many in the environmental community engaged in a debate about whether the environmental movement was capable of adequately inspiring the public to effectively respond to climate change. This Article examines the strand of this debate that centered upon responses from environmental justice actors to the larger environmental community. Specifically, the ensuing conversations raised questions about who, precisely, is the environmental community, what is its historical legacy, how should the environment be conceptualized to promote more effective climate policy, the role of technocratic solutions, and the need for transformative coalition …

Effect Of High Intensity Ultrasound On Crystallization Behavior Of Anhydrous Milk Fat, Silvana Martini, A. H. Suzuki, R. W. Hartel Jul 2008

Effect Of High Intensity Ultrasound On Crystallization Behavior Of Anhydrous Milk Fat, Silvana Martini, A. H. Suzuki, R. W. Hartel

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The need to eliminate trans-fatty acids from foods’ formulation resulted in the exploration of new lipid sources and alternative processing conditions that will improve the physicochemical characteristics and nutritional qualities of lipid-based foods. In general, the physicochemical characteristics of lipid networks depend on the microstructure and crystallization behavior of the system. The objective of this work was to use high intensity ultrasound (HIU) as an additional processing condition to alter the crystallization behavior of a lipid model system (anhydrous milk fat). Results show that HIU application not only decreases the induction time of crystallization (faster crystallization) at a constant crystallization …

Judicial Review And American Constitutional Exceptionalism, Miguel Schor Jul 2008

Judicial Review And American Constitutional Exceptionalism, Miguel Schor

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article challenges the conventional view of the pervasiveness of American-style judicial review. It questions why social movements contest constitutional meaning by fighting over judicial appointments in the United States, and why this strategy makes little sense in democracies that constitutionalized rights in the late twentieth century. The United States has been both a model and an anti-model in the global spread of judicial review, as the hope of Marbury (constitutionalized rights) has been tempered by the fear of Lochner [courts run amok). In reconciling Marbury and Lochner, other polities have adopted stronger mechanisms of judicial accountability that make it …
