Comparing Values For A Private Environmental Good, Xeriscape: Hedonic Price Method Versus Contingent Valuation Method, Carole Ann Rollins Jan 2008

Comparing Values For A Private Environmental Good, Xeriscape: Hedonic Price Method Versus Contingent Valuation Method, Carole Ann Rollins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The hedonic price method (HPM) and the contingent valuation method (CVM) are two valuation techniques used to estimate and report benefits of public and private environmental goods. Both methods are used in comparison studies for public goods, but not for private goods. The purpose of this study is to extend the knowledge of economic valuation for a private good by comparing a reported value from a contingent valuation survey with an estimate from the HPM using the application of xeriscape landscaping in residential settings. Market data were collected from 500 residential locations in Clark County, Nevada; of this sample, 250 …

A System Dynamics Approach To Water Resources Planning And Management In South Florida, Dinesh Kumar Prashar Jan 2008

A System Dynamics Approach To Water Resources Planning And Management In South Florida, Dinesh Kumar Prashar

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary aim of this research is to test a number of policy options to reduce water consumption in agricultural and municipal sectors, and quantify its impact on environmental supply. A System Dynamics model is developed to evaluate the sustainability of agricultural, municipal, and environmental water demands in South Florida. Performance criteria of vulnerability, resilience, and reliability, are used to measure the success of the policies. In addition, scenarios with varying precipitation and population growth rates are generated to account for uncertainty; The status-quo simulations run from 1970 to 2050 show a reduction in environmental flows after 2010. That can …

Percolation-Based Techniques For Upscaling The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Semi-Realistic Geological Media, Bilal Idriss Jan 2008

Percolation-Based Techniques For Upscaling The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Semi-Realistic Geological Media, Bilal Idriss

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

I tested three schemes for "upscaling" the hydraulic conductivity (K) on aquifers with bimodal K distributions. This bimodality (e.g., sand and mud deposits) was intended to capture typical geological conditions. Results were tested with a numerical model. Upscaling techniques used were inspired by schemes interpolating between arithmetic and harmonic means, but are based on percolation theory: 1) Critical path analysis (CPA), 2) Percolation path analysis (PPA, or standard scaling), and a novel scaling approach. Models chosen were both spatially correlated and uncorrelated, with important differences in critical percolation probabilities, Pc. Volume fractions Ps and 1-Ps (with Ps = sand volume …

Why Climate Law Must Be Federal: The Clash Between Commerce Clause Jurisprudence And State Greenhouse Gas Trading Systems, Joseph Macdougald Jan 2008

Why Climate Law Must Be Federal: The Clash Between Commerce Clause Jurisprudence And State Greenhouse Gas Trading Systems, Joseph Macdougald

Faculty Articles and Papers

Absent Federal legislation or leadership on regulatory responses to greenhouse gas (“GHG”)-based climate problems, the states have sought, either on their own or through regional agreements, to restrict the amount of GHG released by the electric power plants within their states. These systems are subject to “leakage,” the ability of power providers to receive electricity from an “extra-regional” and hence unregulated source. While practical considerations may limit the immediate impact of leakage, in the long term, state-based systems perversely provide competitive advantages to unrestricted GHG-emitting power sources that do not have the burden of compliance. One logical avenue to address …

Technical Note: Molecular Characterization Of Aerosol-Derived Water Soluble Organic Carbon Using Ultrahigh Resolution Electrospray Ionization Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, A. S. Wozniak, J. E. Bauer, R. L. Sleighter, R. M. Dickhut, Patrick Hatcher

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Despite the acknowledged relevance of aerosol-derived water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) to climate and biogeochemical cycling, characterization of aerosol WSOC has been limited. Electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS) was utilized in this study to provide detailed molecular level characterization of the hi(,h molecular weight (HMW; m/z>223) component of aerosol-derived WSOC collected from rural sites in Virginia and New York, USA. More than 3000 peaks were detected by ESI FT-ICR MS within a m/z range of 223-600 for each sample. Approximately 86% (Virginia) and 78% (New York) of these peaks were assigned molecular formulas …

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

Known as the Green Mountain State, Vermont underwent widespread reforestation following farm abandonment in the mid-1800s. In addition to the existence of several land trusts, the Green Mountain Club has protected more than 55 mi. (88 km.) along a hikers' Long Trail. There is a strong state environmental movement, with local groups and chapters of national organizations. Vermont hosts one of the nation's leading environmental law and policy programs at the Vermont Law School. The state government has invested in energy efficiency and joined regional efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Climate change and global warming concern Vermonters because …

Many Telling Moments:The Essence Of Fragmented Image Culture, Bonnie Ebner Jan 2008

Many Telling Moments:The Essence Of Fragmented Image Culture, Bonnie Ebner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in entering the UCF MFA program was to further explore and develop my passion for photography. During my time in the program, I developed my methodology--from having the traditional photography paradigm ingrained in my mind (and wanting to fit into it) to accepting and valuing my own unique process. I construct installations using diverse imagery and non-traditional presentation. In my installations, one may witness a reflection of the contemporary pace of image perception--fragmented, complex, abundant, and disordered. Together, images and their arrangements are used to create a unified piece that satisfies a new system within apparent disorder. The …

An Environmental Characterization Of Unbound Mining Residuals From The Tri-State Mining District, Scott Greenwood Jan 2008

An Environmental Characterization Of Unbound Mining Residuals From The Tri-State Mining District, Scott Greenwood

Master's Theses and Capstones

The mining and processing of mineral ores presents significant waste management issues due to the large quantities of waste generated and the environmental characteristics of that waste. Conventional waste management options are considered unsustainable and impractical, therefore consideration of alternative options, such as recycling, require investigation. This research analyzed the environmental characteristics of three mining residual samples from the Tri State Mining District to determine if they could be potentially recycled into an unbound highway application.

Testing found that all three samples could be a potentially acceptable aggregate substitute if implemented correctly. Leaching tests showed that the materials did not …

Understanding The Motivations Of Rock Climbers: A Social Worlds Study, Amy Miller Ansari Jan 2008

Understanding The Motivations Of Rock Climbers: A Social Worlds Study, Amy Miller Ansari

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Rock climbing affects public lands through erosion, destruction of vegetation, and disturbance to historical sites. Minimum impact messages can help reduce impacts but requires understanding characteristics of the message recipient. The purpose of this study was to understand the motivations of rock climbers to help land managers design more effective minimum impact messages. This study assesses the motivations of rock climbers using a social worlds approach, focusing on the sub-worlds of. traditional climbers, sport climbers, and boulderers. I found that traditional climbers are most motivated to pursue a wilderness experience, climb in a natural wilderness setting, and climb in quiet …

Diminished Access, Diverted Exclusion: Women And Land Tenure In Sub-Saharan Africa, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 2008

Diminished Access, Diverted Exclusion: Women And Land Tenure In Sub-Saharan Africa, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Increasing commercialization, population growth and concurrent increases in land value have affected women's land rights in Africa. Most of the literature concentrates on how these changes have led to an erosion of women's rights. This paper examines some of the processes by which women's rights to land are diminishing. First, we examine cases where rights previously utilized have become less important; that is, the incidence of exercising rights has decreased. Second, we investigate how women's rights to land decrease as the public meanings underlying the social interpretation and enforcement of rights are manipulated. Third, we examine women's diminishing access to …

Competitive Supragovernmental Regulation: How Could It Be Democratic?, Errol E. Meidinger Jan 2008

Competitive Supragovernmental Regulation: How Could It Be Democratic?, Errol E. Meidinger

Journal Articles

This paper explores the possibility that a developing form of regulatory governance is also sketching out a new form of anticipatory regulatory democracy. 'Competitive supra-governmental regulation' is largely driven by non-state actors and is therefore commonly viewed as suffering a democracy deficit. However, because it stresses broad participation, intensive deliberative procedures, responsiveness to state law and widely accepted norms, and competition among regulatory programs to achieve effective implementation and widespread public acceptance, this form of regulation appears to stand up relatively well under generally understood criteria for democratic governance. Nonetheless, a more satisfactory evaluation will require a much better understanding …

Comprehensive Planning In Louisiana, Lynn A. Maloney-Mújica Jan 2008

Comprehensive Planning In Louisiana, Lynn A. Maloney-Mújica

LSU Master's Theses

This study explores the factors associated with the implementation of land use planning policies and tools among the parishes (counties) of Louisiana. There is an absence of statutory standards, strict guidelines, and other external drivers for planning in Louisiana and the extent to which local governments regulate land use varies widely among local jurisdictions. The purpose of this study is to provide an empirical model of intrinsic factors that might explain why some parishes have decided to intervene in land use by adopting a high number of planning policies and tools, and why others have failed to adopt few, if …

The Impacts Of River Impoundment: A Case Study Of H. Neely Henry Lake In Northeast Alabama, Willis Scott Estis

LSU Master's Theses

Dam building is one of the methods that modern civilization uses in an attempt to harness the power of nature. These dams and the impoundments associated with them can contribute numerous positive impacts to the surrounding human population. Unfortunately, there are negative impacts as well. This research focuses on one impoundment in particular, H. Neely Henry Lake in northeast Alabama (an impoundment of the Coosa River). Site-specific information regarding the H. Neely Henry development is explored including area geography, history, and the formation of the Alabama Power Company – the agency responsible for H. Neely Henry and other Coosa River …

An Analysis Of The Benefits And Patterns Of Public Support For Urban Forestry Programs, Barbi Marisa Landano

LSU Master's Theses

Trees are an essential element in a healthy urban community. They provide many benefits if they are properly managed and maintained throughout their lives. In order to accomplish this, urban forestry programs need to be established and there needs to be a good support system within the city. The objectives of this study are to identify key factors that may influence public support for urban forestry programs and to examine the role of nonprofit organizations in building support for and implementing urban forest programs. Surveys of Baton Rouge, Louisiana residents were conducted to identify the variables that are associated with …
