Using Landscape History And Baseline Data In The Restoration Of A Midwestern Savanna, Andrew P. Rayburn, Annabel L. Major Jan 2008

Using Landscape History And Baseline Data In The Restoration Of A Midwestern Savanna, Andrew P. Rayburn, Annabel L. Major

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Over one hundred and fifty years of Euro-American settlement has dramatically altered Midwestern landscapes, resulting in the widespread conversion of native habitat. Numerous opportunities to conduct ecological restoration exist within the Midwest, with the potential to increase habitat and landscape heterogeneity, secure critical ecosystem services, and provide opportunities for research and education. Site history is an important consideration for most restoration projects, and multiple sources of historical data may be required to unravel the complicated history of intensively used Midwestern landscapes. The collection of baseline data is another significant component of most restoration projects, allowing for an evaluation of community …

From Individuals To Ecosystem Function: Toward An Integration Of Evolutionary And Ecosystem Ecology, Oswald J. Schmitz, Jonathan H. Garbowski, Barbara L. Peckarsky, Evan L. Preisser, Geoffrey C. Trussell, James R. Vonesh Jan 2008

From Individuals To Ecosystem Function: Toward An Integration Of Evolutionary And Ecosystem Ecology, Oswald J. Schmitz, Jonathan H. Garbowski, Barbara L. Peckarsky, Evan L. Preisser, Geoffrey C. Trussell, James R. Vonesh

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

An important goal in ecology is developing general theory on how the species composition of ecosystems is related to ecosystem properties and functions. Progress on this front is limited partly because of the need to identify mechanisms controlling functions that are common to a wide range of ecosystem types. We propose that one general mechanism, rooted in the evolutionary ecology of all species, is adaptive foraging behavior in response to predation risk. To support our claim, we present two kinds of empirical evidence from plant‐based and detritus‐based food chains of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The first kind comes from experiments …

Untangling Tenth Amendment Standing: Why Private Parties Cannot Enforce The Federal Structure, David M. Palmer Jan 2008

Untangling Tenth Amendment Standing: Why Private Parties Cannot Enforce The Federal Structure, David M. Palmer

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

In the last thirty years, the Tenth Amendment has experienced a resurgence as an independent check on the powers of the federal government. This newfound interest in the meaning and power of the Tenth Amendment has inevitably led to the question: Who may bring a Tenth Amendment claim? As the Tenth Amendment concerns the relationship between states and the federal government, states, not private parties, have traditionally acted as plaintiffs in suits against federal government incursion. However, the Seventh and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals have, in a series of cases beginning twenty-five years ago, expressly permitted private parties to …

Linkage Of The Us National Health Interview Survey To Air Monitoring Data: An Evaluation Of Different Strategies, Jennifer D. Parker, Tracey Woodruff, Lara J. Akinbami, Natalyia Kravets Jan 2008

Linkage Of The Us National Health Interview Survey To Air Monitoring Data: An Evaluation Of Different Strategies, Jennifer D. Parker, Tracey Woodruff, Lara J. Akinbami, Natalyia Kravets

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The goal of this study is to describe linkages between the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air monitoring data, specifically how the linkage method affects characteristics and exposure estimates of study samples and estimated associations between exposure and health. In the USA, nationally representative health data are collected in the NHIS and annual air quality data are collected by the EPA. The linkage of these data for research is not straightforward and the choices made may introduce bias into results. The 2000–2003 NHIS and air quality data for six air pollutants were linked by residential …

Scenario analysis is the process of evaluating possible future events through the consideration of alternative plausible, though not equally likely, states (scenarios). The definition by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) best represents scenarios considered in the natural sciences:

"A scenario is a coherent) internally consistent and plausible description of a possible future state of the world. It is not a forecast; rather, each scenario is one alternative image ~fhow the future can unfold."(http://ipcc-ddc.cru. uea.ac.uk/ ddc_definitions. htnll)

Temporal And Spatial Variation In Solar Radiation And Photo-Enhanced Toxicity Risks Of Spilled Oil In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Usa, Mace G. Barron, Deborah Vivian, Susan H. Yee, Steve A. Diamond Jan 2008

Temporal And Spatial Variation In Solar Radiation And Photo-Enhanced Toxicity Risks Of Spilled Oil In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Usa, Mace G. Barron, Deborah Vivian, Susan H. Yee, Steve A. Diamond

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Solar irradiance (W/m2) and downwelling diffuse attenuation coefficients (Kd; 1/m) were determined in several locations in Prince William Sound (AK, USA) between April 2003 and December 2005 to assess temporal and spatial variation in solar radiation and the risks of photo-enhanced toxicity from spilled oil.Weekly irradiance measurements of surface visible light, ultraviolet B (UVB), and ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation in Valdez (AK, USA) followed expected trends of maximum solar irradiance at each summer solstice and minimum values at each winter solstice. Variation from weekly maximum expected surface irradiances was attributed to large variations in environmental conditions …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

In January 2003, the US Environmental Protection Agency sponsored a ‘‘roundtable discussion’’ to develop a consensus on the relationship between eutrophication and harmful algal blooms (HABs), specifically targeting those relationships for which management actions may be appropriate. Academic, federal, and state agency representatives were in attendance. The following seven statements were unanimously adopted by attendees based on review and analysis of current as well as pertinent previous data:

(1) Degraded water quality from increased nutrient pollution promotes the development and persistence of many HABs and is one of the reasons for their expansion in the U.S. and other nations;

(2) …

A Schweitzer Approach To Higher Education: Utilizing Principles Drawn From The Life Of Albert Schweitzer To Develop A Holistic And Comprehensive Educational Model, John B. Miller Jan 2008

A Schweitzer Approach To Higher Education: Utilizing Principles Drawn From The Life Of Albert Schweitzer To Develop A Holistic And Comprehensive Educational Model, John B. Miller

Theses and Graduate Projects

While quite young, Albert Schweitzer was already a well regarded philosopher, a gifted musician, and a groundbreaking theologian when he became a medical doctor and devoted his life to service in equatorial Africa where he received the inspiration for his central ethic of Reverence for Life. A Schweitzer-based higher educational approach draws upon Schweitzer's life example in interweaving elements of academics, arts, spirituality, service, and the direct experience of nature. The academic content is grounded in complexity theory, a post-moderm discipline which expands upon Schweitzer's recognition that, "l am life that wills to live in the midst of life that …

Anthropogenically Enhanced Fluxes Of Water And Carbon From The Mississippi River, P A. Raymond, N H. Oh, R. Eugene Turner, W Broussard, P A. Raymond Jan 2008

Anthropogenically Enhanced Fluxes Of Water And Carbon From The Mississippi River, P A. Raymond, N H. Oh, R. Eugene Turner, W Broussard, P A. Raymond

Faculty Publications

The water and dissolved inorganic carbon exported by rivers are important net fluxes that connect terrestrial and oceanic water and carbon reservoirs(1). For most rivers, the majority of dissolved inorganic carbon is in the form of bicarbonate. The riverine bicarbonate flux originates mainly from the dissolution of rock minerals by soil water carbon dioxide, a process called chemical weathering, which controls the buffering capacity and mineral content of receiving streams and rivers(2). Here we introduce an unprecedented high- temporal- resolution, 100- year data set from the Mississippi River and couple it with sub- watershed and precipitation data to reveal that …
