Results Of A Twenty-Two Year Old Progeny Test Of A Pinus Sylvestris Plantation In Eastern Nebraska, Adam D. Rupe, Tala Awada

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

The goal of this study was to examine the performance and adaptability of a 22-year-old Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine) full-sibling progeny plantation representing genetic material from seven European countries (Spain, France, Russia, Ex-Yugoslavia, Italy, Greece, and Germany), to the Great Plains environment. The study site was located at the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead, NE. A total of 92 individuals originating from 23 crosses were studied for the following growth parameters: specific leaf area (SLA, cm2g-1), needle length (cm), canopy width (m), and tree height (m). Analysis of variance and …

Development Of A Definition, Classification System, And Model For Cultural Geology., Lloyd W. Mitchell Iii Aug 2008

Development Of A Definition, Classification System, And Model For Cultural Geology., Lloyd W. Mitchell Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The concept for this study is based upon a personal interest by the author, an American Indian, in promoting cultural perspectives in undergraduate college teaching and learning environments. Most academicians recognize that merged fields can enhance undergraduate curricula. However, conflict may occur when instructors attempt to merge social science fields such as history or philosophy with geoscience fields such as mining and geomorphology. For example, ideologies of Earth structures derived from scientific methodologies may conflict with historical and spiritual understandings of Earth structures held by American Indians. Specifically, this study addresses the problem of how to combine cultural studies with …

Asap: The Access To Space For Small Satellites, Jérôme Thiery Aug 2008

Asap: The Access To Space For Small Satellites, Jérôme Thiery

Small Satellite Conference

For any satellite customer, the key to “mission success” starts with the launch phase, one of the most important and sensitive periods in the whole development chain. This is especially the case for small missions built on small size platforms, for which clear rules and dedicated interface specifications must be established and followed to reach success. Although launch cost is a major driver for such missions, well established standards and corresponding experience must remain a key parameter when selecting the launch service provider. Last year, Arianespace presented its experience in launching small satellites, in particular the ASAP 5 on Ariane …

Redevelopment Of A Municipal Solid Waste Landfill: Engineering Design Challenges, Derrick A. Shelton, David A. Schoenwolf, Nisha P. Mohanan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Loyola College in Maryland is a land-locked University in dire need of increasing its academic space. Working with the Baltimore Development Corporation, Loyola purchased a 52-acre parcel of land within miles of their campus which consisted of three closed landfills. The site was Loyola’s preferred location to construct a state-of-the-art athletic complex because moving their athletic facilities to an off-campus location would allow the expansion of their academic space. The athletic complex includes a home game field for lacrosse and soccer, two practice fields, administrative and maintenance buildings, stadium, and supporting infrastructure. Filling at the three landfills began in 1930 …

Artificial Neural Networks To Detect Forest Fire Prone Areas In The Southeast Fire District Of Mississippi, Mohan P. Tiruveedhula Aug 2008

Artificial Neural Networks To Detect Forest Fire Prone Areas In The Southeast Fire District Of Mississippi, Mohan P. Tiruveedhula

Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of the fire occurrences parameters is essential to save human lives, property, timber resources and conservation of biodiversity. Data conversion formats such as raster to ASCII facilitate the integration of various GIS software’s in the context of RS and GIS modeling. This research explores fire occurrences in relation to human interaction, fuel density interaction, euclidean distance from the perennial streams and slope using artificial neural networks. The human interaction (ignition source) and density of fuels is assessed by Newton’s Gravitational theory. Euclidean distance to perennial streams and slope that do posses a significant role were derived using GIS …

Relationship Between Land Use And Surface Water Quality In A Rapidly Developing Watershed In Southeast Louisiana, Andrea Bourgeois-Calvin Aug 2008

Relationship Between Land Use And Surface Water Quality In A Rapidly Developing Watershed In Southeast Louisiana, Andrea Bourgeois-Calvin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Tangipahoa River and Natalbany River watersheds (Tangipahoa Parish/County) in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin (southeastern Louisiana) are experiencing rapid urbanization, particularly in the wake of the 2005 hurricane season. To document the impact of land use on water quality, thirty sites were monitored for surface water physiochemical, geochemical, and bacteriological parameters. Water quality data was compared to land use within four sub-watersheds of the Tangipahoa Watershed and three sub-watersheds of the Natalbany Watershed. Urbanization had the most profound impact on water quality of all land uses. In watersheds with little urban land cover (< 7% with the sub-watershed) waterbodies had low dissolved salt, nutrient, and fecal coliform concentrations and high dissolved oxygen levels. Waterbodies within the urban region (> 28% urban land cover within the …

An Examination: Using Participatory Action Research In A Marginalized Coastal Community At Risk To Natural Hazards, Joselin Simoneaux Landry Aug 2008

An Examination: Using Participatory Action Research In A Marginalized Coastal Community At Risk To Natural Hazards, Joselin Simoneaux Landry

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This extended case study examines the appropriateness of using Participatory Action Research (PAR) in a small, marginalized coastal community at risk to natural hazards. PAR is a method of conducting high-quality research to support the social change goals of diverse cultural and ethnic communities, especially as they relate to community involvement, democracy, emancipation, and liberation (Lindsey and McGuinness (1998). PAR is not the typical research methodology for hazards research. The community's goal was to "Save our heritage and our land". They consisted of 75-80 members who primarily make their living by seafood extraction. This community has experienced social oppression and …
