Catholic Social Teaching And Global Migration: Bridging The Paradox Of Universal Human Rights And Territorial Self-Determination, Vincent D. Rougeau Dec 2008

Catholic Social Teaching And Global Migration: Bridging The Paradox Of Universal Human Rights And Territorial Self-Determination, Vincent D. Rougeau

Journal Articles

In this essay, I will consider how law, religion, and democratic pluralism revolve around a particular issue: global migration. I use the term global migration to encompass a number of related issues that are often collapsed under the term immigration. In nations that have constructed their identities around waves of settlers or migrants -- places like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand -- immigration involves the formal reception of foreigners into the host country as potential new citizens. This is just one part of the migration of peoples around the globe. Migration also encompasses emigration, asylum, economic migration, and …

Ultrasonographic Features Of Schwannoma Of The Lower Limb: Two Casereports, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Tyng-Guey Wang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Chung-Li Wang, Yen-Ho Wang Dec 2008

Ultrasonographic Features Of Schwannoma Of The Lower Limb: Two Casereports, Hsiao-Wei Lin, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Tyng-Guey Wang, Wen-Shiang Chen, Chung-Li Wang, Yen-Ho Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Schwannoma is a benign encapsulated nerve sheath tumor. It typically develops in middle age with unknown cause and usually involves spinal root and peripheral nerves. We report two cases of schwannoma presenting as palpable mass over lower limbs. Both masses had heterogeneous hypoechogenicity, faint posterior enhancement, and were located eccentric to a nerve fascicle. Preoperative sonography revealed both patients had nerve tumors derived from nerve fascicles. These cases illustrate how sonographic information about the relationship between mass and surrounding structures can facilitate surgical planning.

Hippotherapy On Gross Motor Function In A Child With Hypotonic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy: A 1-Year Follow-Up, Yueh-Ling Hsieh, Shu-Ya Zhan, Shyi-Kuen Wu, Chen-Chia Yang, Yu-Chun Lee, Hong-Ji Luo Dec 2008

Hippotherapy On Gross Motor Function In A Child With Hypotonic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy: A 1-Year Follow-Up, Yueh-Ling Hsieh, Shu-Ya Zhan, Shyi-Kuen Wu, Chen-Chia Yang, Yu-Chun Lee, Hong-Ji Luo

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hippotherapy is used to improve gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, the therapeutic effects of hippotherapy using specific position and its longitudinal improvements in children of hypotonic CP have not been thoroughly examined. A 6-year-old girl with hypotonic quadriplegic CP was noted to have generalized hypotonia and global delay in development before intervention. There was sustained improvement in gross motor function after 12-month hippotherapy. She received a 15-minute intervention twice a week for one year with two treatment positions being used, sitting backwards for the first 3 months and prone propped position for the next 9 …

Interval Perfusional Changes Of Unilateral Basal Ganglion In A Neuroleptic Naive Patient With Rabbit Syndrome, Ming-Hsien Chou, Kao-Chung Tsai, Tsung-Ying Li, Chun-Fu Wang, Liang-Cheng Chen, Shin-Tsu Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Rabbit syndrome has been demonstrated as one of the extrapyramidal side effects, which is associated strongly with chronic neuroleptic therapy in neurological patients, but less discussion in patients without therapy. We herein present a rare case of rabbit syndrome that occurred with neuroleptic naive patient. The study of cerebral perfusion with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) revealed increased perfusion in the right basal ganglion upon presentation of the oral-lip movement disorder and presented with a return to normal in a repeated SPECT perfusion when those movement ceased.

Acute Spontaneous Cervical Spinal Epidural Hematoma With Hemiparesis: A Casereport, Shu-Wei Chang, Chi-Lun Rau, Shin-Liang Pan, Yen-Ho Wang Dec 2008

Acute Spontaneous Cervical Spinal Epidural Hematoma With Hemiparesis: A Casereport, Shu-Wei Chang, Chi-Lun Rau, Shin-Liang Pan, Yen-Ho Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma is a rare disease. The cardinal presentations include acute unilateral radicular pain, corresponding dermatomal hypesthesia, hemiparesis, hemiplegia, paraparesis, paraplegia, and sphincter dysfunction. If the initial symptoms include acute hemiplegia, it is important to differentiate spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma from stroke, tumor, infection, arteriovenous malformation, or autoimmune diseases. We report the case of a 42-year-old man, who visited the emergency department in September, 2006, with the chief complaints of right limbs weakness and neck pain. After the initial work-up, the impression was ischemic stroke. He was admitted for conservative treatment, but his neurological status progressively deteriorated. A cervical …

Cardiopulmonary Function And Exercise Capacity In Children With Kawasaki Disease, Yu-Ling Wang, Ai-Lun Yang, Jue-Long Wang, Chun-Han Yang, Zheng-Yu Hoe, Chien-Ming Huang, Ko-Long Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Kawasaki disease complicated by coronary artery disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. Maximal anaerobic capacity and factors of restrictive exercise capacity need to be evaluated. To study the influence of Kawasaki disease on cardiopulmonary function and exercise capacity, sixteen children were recruited for the experimental group and given a cardiopulmonary exercise stress test. Sixteen healthy children were recruited as the control group. Based on the findings, the VO2(subscript max) (8.06±2.13/10.24±2.39MET, p=0.01) and the maximal systolic blood pressure (144.19±27.39/163.40±21.64mmHg, p=0.02) demonstrated statistically significant differences between children with Kawasaki disease and healthy children, but no significant difference in …

Etiology And Seasonal Variation For Young Stroke Patients In Taiwan, Ying-Fang Chen, Baii-Jia Yang, Yi-Pin Chiang Dec 2008

Etiology And Seasonal Variation For Young Stroke Patients In Taiwan, Ying-Fang Chen, Baii-Jia Yang, Yi-Pin Chiang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Over a 3-year period, 3852 patients with the first stroke were admitted to a medical center in Taiwan, of whom 227 (5.89%) were 15 to 45 years old. The diagnosis of stroke was confirmed by either MRI or CT scan. The incidence was skewed toward the older end of the age range, and men predominated (153/227, 67.4%). The stroke was the hemorrhagic type in 56.3% (128/227) versus the infarction type in 43.7% (99/227), a reversal of the ratio usually seen in patients over 45 years with infarction 64.9% (2500) versus hemorrhage 35.1% (1352). The case-fatality rate was 13.2% (30/227), including …

Femoral Nerve Injury Following Transfemoral Angiography: A Casereport, Chien-Ching Yu, Ying-Ju Shih, Su-Ju Tsai Dec 2008

Femoral Nerve Injury Following Transfemoral Angiography: A Casereport, Chien-Ching Yu, Ying-Ju Shih, Su-Ju Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Femoral nerve injury is a rare complication after femoral angiography. Symptoms including quadriceps weakness and atrophy, absent or reduced knee jerk and sensory impairment along the anterior thigh and medial lower leg have been found. This leads to both muscular weakness and sensory deficit, which impairs walking and interferes with quality of life. Early identification and management of femoral nerve injury could result in better prognosis. We report on the history, diagnosis and rehabilitative outcome of a 54-year-old woman with a medical history of peripheral arterial occlusion disease. She developed significant femoral neuropathy one month after angiography. Severe neurological deficits were …

Clinical Features And Rehabilitation Of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Complicated With Moyamoya Syndrome: A Casereport, Wei-Chih Lien, Jo-Tong Chen, Shu-Cheng Lin, Nai-Wen Guo, Da-Shen Kuan Dec 2008

Clinical Features And Rehabilitation Of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Complicated With Moyamoya Syndrome: A Casereport, Wei-Chih Lien, Jo-Tong Chen, Shu-Cheng Lin, Nai-Wen Guo, Da-Shen Kuan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Moyamoya disease is an uncommon clinical entity characterized by progressive narrowing and occlusion of the bilateral distal internal carotid arteries, as well as the proximal parts of their major branches, namely, the middle and anterior cerebral arteries. Concomitant development of prominent collateral vascularity in the basal regions of the brain results in the typical angiographic appearance of moyamoya, which literally means a wavering puff of smoke. Moyamoya syndrome refers to findings of moyamoya vasculopathy in the context of known systemic disease. We present a 26-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus who had several episodes of ischemic stroke. Her cerebral angiograms …

Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hemorrhage With Shoulder And Neck Pain As Initial Presentation: A Casereport, Yu-Min Kuo, Wai-Keung Lee, Cheng-Chih Liao, Li-Rong Chen Dec 2008

Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hemorrhage With Shoulder And Neck Pain As Initial Presentation: A Casereport, Yu-Min Kuo, Wai-Keung Lee, Cheng-Chih Liao, Li-Rong Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Spontaneous spinal epidural hemorrhage is a very rare disease, with an annual incidence estimated at one per million. Emergency surgery is indicated for a good prognosis, without which the death rate would be higher. Although the initial symptoms of cervical, thoracic, and back pain make it difficult to differentiate spontaneous spinal epidural hemorrhage from other common disease with similar symptoms, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a highly sensitive diagnostic method. We report the case of a 22-year-old male patient who initially complained of pain over the left shoulder and left cervical area. After nine days, numbness was noted in his left …

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Of The Workers In A Child Care Institution, Yi-Shiung Horng, Shih-Fu Hsieh, Hsin-Chi Wu, Chi-Tzu Feng, Ming-Chuan Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The work-related musculoskeletal disorders among the child care workers could be high given the fact that the workers frequently lift the children and conduct physical actions under inappropriate postures. The objective of this study is to survey the musculoskeletal disorders and potential ergonomic risk factors among the workers in a child care center through an on-site visit and a questionnaire survey. We also used the Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ) as a screening questionnaire to detect the emotional distress of the workers. There were 85 workers recruited in our study. Results showed that shoulder pain (57.0%), low back pain (54.7%) and neck …

Myofascial Low Back Pain, Mu-Jung Kao, Ta-Shen Kuan,, Yueh-Ling Hsieh, Jeng-Feng Yang, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Objective: This reviewarticle article describes the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical characters and management of low back pain (LBP) caused by myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), i.e. myofascial low back pain.Findings: Based on the currently available knowledge and our clinical experience, we analyzed the basic and clinical aspects of myofascial LBP. Most cases of myofascial LBP are related to injuries, either current or previous. Active MTrPs that cause LBP are usually activated as a consequence of other etiological lesions. Therefore, it is important to determine and treat the underlying pathological lesions in order to avoid recurrence of myofascial LBP. If the underlying pathological …
