Socializing Housing Phased Early Response To Impromptu Migrant Encampments In Lima, Peru, Raul E. Mayta Nov 2008

Socializing Housing Phased Early Response To Impromptu Migrant Encampments In Lima, Peru, Raul E. Mayta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Every year hundreds of people migrate from the highlands of Peru to the coastal capital of Lima searching for economic and social stability. These groups of people have similar characteristics that keep them together they come from the same city, are members of the same family, have the same religion, have similar goals, and so on. Once in Lima they take possession of the only free areas left in the city: the mountains. Due to a lack of economic resources, poor urban planning and unsuitable site conditions the settlements grow for years in a disorderly, unsafe and unsanitary way, creating …

Discrete Linear Constrained Multivariate Optimization For Power Sources Of Mobile Systems, Stelios G. Ioannou Nov 2008

Discrete Linear Constrained Multivariate Optimization For Power Sources Of Mobile Systems, Stelios G. Ioannou

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned ground and aerial vehicles (UGVs and UAVs) have strict payload limitations, limited free space affecting on board power availability resulting in limited endurance and operational range. This limitation is exacerbated by the addition of sensors, actuators and other related equipment needed to accomplish mission objectives in diverse applications.

Two energy sources are mainly available for mobile applications; batteries and fuel cells. Batteries are a relatively cheap, tested technology with good performance under varying loads. On the other hand, fuel cells offer fast and easy refueling solutions. Furthermore, preliminary studies have shown that a hybrid system can combine the advantages …

The Virtual Landscape Of Geological Information Topics, Methods, And Rhetoric In Modern Geology, Sarah Elizabeth Fratesi Nov 2008

The Virtual Landscape Of Geological Information Topics, Methods, And Rhetoric In Modern Geology, Sarah Elizabeth Fratesi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Geology is undergoing changes that could influence its knowledge claims, reportedly becoming more laboratory-based, technology-driven, quantitative, and physics- and chemistry-rich over time. This dissertation uses techniques from information science and linguistics to examine the geologic literature of 1945-2005. It consists of two studies: an examination of the geological literature as an expanding network of related subdisciplines, and an investigation of the linguistic and graphical argumentation strategies within geological journal articles.

The first investigation is a large-scale study of topics within articles from 67 geologic journals. Clustering of subdiscipline journals based on titles and keywords reveals six major areas of geology: …

Reestablishing The Neighborhood: Exploring New Relationships & Strategies In Inner City Single Family Home Development, Jeremy Michael Hughes Nov 2008

Reestablishing The Neighborhood: Exploring New Relationships & Strategies In Inner City Single Family Home Development, Jeremy Michael Hughes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the end of World War II, American cities have been stuck in the development trend of urban sprawl. The suburban ideal and proliferation of the automobile have fostered this trend, as well as several other negative issues in our society including inefficient land use and isolation of lower social and economic groups. After fifty years as the model by which American cities grow, it has proven itself to be both inefficient in land use and ineffective in bridging the social gaps that have existed since its inception. A new model for city growth is necessary, one that encourages steady …

Analysis Of Water Seepage Through Earthen Structures Using The Particulate Approach, Kalyani Jeyisanker Nov 2008

Analysis Of Water Seepage Through Earthen Structures Using The Particulate Approach, Kalyani Jeyisanker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A particulate model is developed to analyze the effects of steady state and transient seepage of water through a randomly-packed coarse-grained soil as an improvement to conventional seepage analysis based on continuum models. In the new model the soil skeleton and pore water are volumetrically coupled. In the first phase of the study, the concept of relative density has been used to define different compaction levels of the soil layers of a completely saturated pavement filter system and observe the seepage response to compaction. First, Monte-Carlo simulation is used to randomly pack discrete spherical particles from a specified Particle Size …

Systematic Literature Search: Functional Neuroimaging Of Geriatric Schizophrenia, Chris Abbott, Jonathan Eldredge Nov 2008

Systematic Literature Search: Functional Neuroimaging Of Geriatric Schizophrenia, Chris Abbott, Jonathan Eldredge

Clinical and Translational Science Center Scholarly Output

Background: Previous investigators have used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to study the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. To date, no one has exclusively focused on fMRI with geriatric schizophrenia. Method: We described three systematic PubMed search strategies on the following topics: (1) geriatric schizophrenia, cognition and dementia; (2) an imaging paradigm designed to elicit an orienting response (i.e., the oddball' paradigm), schizophrenia, dementia, and (3) fMRI studies using independent components analysis. Results (Critical Appraisal): The first search strategy resulted in a large number of sources. We described the rationale for further reduction of this list to find the most relevant 106 …

Gender Roles In Mrs. Doubtfire, Patrick Buranicz Nov 2008

Gender Roles In Mrs. Doubtfire, Patrick Buranicz

2009 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

Among the multitude of issues that affect us every day, Americans have long debated the effects of and reasons for differing gender roles, noting how our culture either embellishes or degrades them, while asking why, if at all, American society should or should not tamper with these roles. One major structure within society that is inevitably affected by gender roles is the family unit. Those who agree on views on family life, such as the conservative value of male breadwinners and female homemakers or the liberal view of either reversed roles or equal levels of these identities, will have a …

Wolfcampian Development Of The Nose Of The Eastern Shelf Of The Midland Basin, Glasscock, Sterling, And Reagan Counties, Texas, Douglas S. Flamm

Theses and Dissertations

The nose of the Eastern shelf of the Midland Basin is a prominent structural and depositional feature present in Glasscock, Sterling, and Howard counties, Texas. This feature has been expressed in many regional maps and mentioned in some literature, but has not otherwise been studied significantly. This study looks at the viability of using an acoustic impedance seismic inversion to interpret the 2nd and 3rd order sequence stratigraphy of the southern portion of the nose of the Eastern shelf along with its shelf to basin transition in Glasscock, Sterling, and Reagan counties during the Wolfcampian (Asselian-Sakmarian) time (Early Permian). The …

Interview With Bill Young, Bill Young, California State University, Monterey Bay Nov 2008

Interview With Bill Young, Bill Young, California State University, Monterey Bay

Chinatown Renewal Project

The Interview starts with what Mr. Young knows about his family coming over from China where he is not fairly lucid of his early memories then jumps around to different points, such as his time working in the Salinas Drive-in market to when he was in the military, then back to Salinas, back to the military and then back to Salinas, each time going to a different period in time. His stories about World War Two are just as lucid as his stories of Korea and he recalls family history of his grandfather being a merchant, that his grandmother was …

A Matlab Package For Markov Chain Monte Carlo With A Multi-Unidimensional Irt Model, Yanyan Sheng Nov 2008

A Matlab Package For Markov Chain Monte Carlo With A Multi-Unidimensional Irt Model, Yanyan Sheng

Publications

Unidimensional item response theory (IRT) models are useful when each item is designed to measure some facet of a unified latent trait. In practical applications, items are not necessarily measuring the same underlying trait, and hence the more general multi-unidimensional model should be considered. This paper provides the requisite information and description of software that implements the Gibbs sampler for such models with two item parameters and a normal ogive form. The software developed is written in the MATLAB package IRTmu2no. The package is flexible enough to allow a user the choice to simulate binary response data with multiple dimensions, …

Reaching Children Communally: School Improvement Through Teacher Collaboration, Peter H. Roukema Nov 2008

Reaching Children Communally: School Improvement Through Teacher Collaboration, Peter H. Roukema

Master of Education Program Theses

From a Christian understanding of both learning and community, this research examines the impact of teacher collaboration on student achievement and school culture in North American schools. Particularly in high schools, due to structural chal1enges, lack of administrative support and teacher satisfaction with the status quo, peer collaboration is not common. Five cases are examined. The first three demonstrate a positive connection between teacher collaboration and school improvement. The fourth demonstrates that teacher evaluation can also benefit from a much more participatory role for the teacher. The last case examines some of the challenges of centering col1aboration in high school …
