Mediation Analyses Of Culture, Alexithymia, Masculine Ideology, And Help-Seeking, Ying-Ying Yeh

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was an examination of whether alexithymia and masculine ideology mediate separately the relationship between culture and help-seeking. Sartre's Critique Of Dialectical Reason And The Inevitability Of Violence: Human Freedom In The Milieu Of Scarcity, Michael Monahan Jan 2008

Sartre's Critique Of Dialectical Reason And The Inevitability Of Violence: Human Freedom In The Milieu Of Scarcity, Michael Monahan

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

In his Critique of Dialectical Reason, Sartre argues that it is the milieu of scarcity that generates human conflict. His account of scarcity is rather ambiguous however, and at points he seems to claim that conflict is inevitable given the context of scarcity. In this article I provide a brief account of Sartre's position, and offer a critical evaluation of that position. Finally, I argue that Sartre's claims regarding the necessity of conflict are excessive, and that the resources provided in the Critique offer a means to re-evaluate our relationship to scarcity.

Sculptural Jewelry In Line Composition, Jaesun Won Jan 2008

Sculptural Jewelry In Line Composition, Jaesun Won

Theses

As a contemporary female Asian artist I want to create sculptural jewelry to be a bridge between western and eastern culture. The most concern for my thesis is developing line work which is one of the most interesting works to me. I created contemporary sculptural jewelry by engaging with the body line compositions. My intention to create jewelry that can be associated with both the body and also stand on its own as a sculptural form. Movement, pattern, rhythm, intersection, space, boundaries, scale, symmetry and asymmetry engage the body within the line compositions revealed in my works.

Settlement Agreements As Defences To Unjust Enrichment Claims, Hang Wu Tang Jan 2008

Settlement Agreements As Defences To Unjust Enrichment Claims, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is unanimity that where there is a contract of settlement, an unjust enrichment claim is barred.  However, there is uncertainty in this area because it is sometimes quite difficult to determine whether a contract of settlement has been concluded between the parties.  This essay will consider the various tests for determining the boundaries of a settlement contract. In the absence of an express settlement agreement, the argument made in this paper is that the most satisfactory and practical approach to deciding whether there is an implied settlement agreement is to focus on whether the payor was consciously aware of …

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines the scope and efficacy of the civil remedies available to investors against listed companies which have made false or misleading statements in the secondary securities market in Singapore, both at common law and the statutory compensation scheme under the Securities and Futures Act. It argues that there are a number of limitations faced by such investors in bringing claims founded in tort law against the listed companies. While the statutory compensation scheme attempts to improve the position of investors, there are a number of deficiencies in the scheme the most significant of which is the ceiling on …

Natural Justice: A Case For Uniform Rigour, Siyuan Chen, Lionel Leo

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This note considers if there is a discernible framework in which courts resolve alleged claims of breaches of natural justice. On the one hand, once it has been ascertained that the rules of natural justice apply, the court will look at all the circumstances of the case to determine if there has been any u nfairness. On the other hand, it has been suggested th even assuming the rules of natural justice apply, there can be varying degrees of rigour in which they are enforced, a sliding scale of sorts.

As The Owl Discreet: Essay Towards A Conversation And Carly's Dance A Novel, Vahri Mckenzie Jan 2008

As The Owl Discreet: Essay Towards A Conversation And Carly's Dance A Novel, Vahri Mckenzie

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis comprises a novel entitled Carly's Dance and an essay entitled As the Owl Discreet. Although separate works, a line runs through them that might be described as an urge to connect; each work, although self-contained, is concerned with the co-existence of opposites, or more precisely, apparent opposites. The essay's title is ironic, borrowed from Hillaire Belloc's perverse verses collected as Cautionary Tales. Discretion is exactly what the thesis tests the bounds of, as do the characters in my novel. And so do I, in using family history to motivate my research.

The 'Good Mother Syndrome' And Playgroup: The Lived Experience Of A Group Of Mothers, Bronwyn Harman

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Using a qualitative approach, utilising a semi-structured narrative interviewing technique, I interviewed 21 participants through one-on-one interviews and focus groups to examine how participants experience parenting and playgroup. The good mother syndrome refers to the social, historical and cultural determination of how mothers are supposed to act. It defines what a good mother is supposed to be, subject to political, cultural and economic influences. Further, the good mother syndrome is inextricably linked to challenges to identity, support in the mothering role, and expectations of motherhood. Playgroups are communities of women bounded by internal and external demands, where they support each …

Western Australian tertiary graduates who enter the visual arts education profession are often well acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings of the Western Australian Curriculum Framework. This knowledge base, in combination with their own visual arts training, typically enables them to enter teaching theoretically well equipped to support students in the development of arts ideas and studio works. The important outcome areas of visual arts history and visual arts criticism often present major challenges for graduates. In the absence of significant post-university support and more importantly, within the context of limited preservice training where visual conceptual understandings and studio skills repertoires …

Improving Community Water Conservation Behavior In Chachoengsao, Thailand, Kuakul Sathapornvajana

The issue of water supply throughout the world is of concern for many reasons. It is projected that by the year 2025 two-thirds of the world's population will encounter moderate to severe water shortages. As a result of unsustainable development over the past decade, Thailand has faced pollution problems as well as the depletion of many natural resources. The Effect Of Nurse Initiated Paracetamol On Emergency Department Patients With Pain From Low Acuity Injury, Joanne G. Wilson Jan 2008

The Effect Of Nurse Initiated Paracetamol On Emergency Department Patients With Pain From Low Acuity Injury, Joanne G. Wilson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Early identification and management of pain was identified at the commencement of this study as a key area requiring research in emergency departments. Prolonged waiting times for analgesia especially, was highlighted in the National Institute of Clinical Studies emergency department collaborative in 2003. Many barriers exist for a patient to receive analgesia. In Western Australia this is compounded by the legislation which restricts prescribing rights for nurses. Three considerations guided the development of the research project. Firstly, the patient has initial contact with the emergency department from the nurse at triage. Secondly, paracetamol was recognised as a potentially effective analgesic …
