Social Network Analysis Of Video Bloggers' Community, John Warmbrodt, Hong Sheng, Richard H. Hall

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Video blogs (or vlogs) have become increasingly popular in recent years. As the main motivation for vlogging is to interact with other vloggers, it is important to investigate the structure of the videobloggers' community and the interactions among vloggers. This research conducted a quantitative analysis using social network analysis. A list of personal vloggers was identified from VlogDIR and linking patters of vlogs were analyzed. The results suggest that video bloggers' community is highly decentralized and exhibits a core/periphery structure.

In The Public Interest': The Responsibilities And Rights Of Government Lawyers, Allan C. Hutchinson Jan 2008

In The Public Interest': The Responsibilities And Rights Of Government Lawyers, Allan C. Hutchinson

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

While considerable thought and effort have been put into exploring and fixing the ethical rights and professional responsibilities of private Lawyers, little energy has been directed towards defining and defending the role and duties of government lawyers. As a result, the traditional understanding seems to be that government lawyers are to consider themselves as being under the same regimen and restrictions as their private counterparts. After criticizing this default approach, the article offers a fresh evaluation of what is different about the role of government lawyers and develops a more appropriate model for thinking about their professional responsibilities and ethical …

Extending The Reach Of The State Into The Post-Sentence Period: Section 26 Of The Criminal Justice Act 2007, Mary Rogan

Articles

The Criminal Justice Act 2007 heralded a plethora of changes to Irish criminal law and procedure. The law on sentencing was also affected by its provisions. The focus of this article is on section 26 of that Act which introduces a general power on a court to make an order while passing sentence which will take effect on the expiration of a sentence of imprisonment. Under section 26 a court can impose two such orders, the “monitoring” order and the “protection of persons” order. The author assesses the background to the introduction of these dispositions and the potential application and …

The Concept Of The General Will In The Writings Of Rousseau, Sièyes, And Robespierre, Stephen Carruthers

Articles

This paper outlines the views on the General Will of Rousseau, as set out in The Social Contract, and compares them to the views developed by Sieyès in Qu'est-ce que le Tiers état? and by Robespierre, most notably in his speeches delivered during the ‘Reign of Terror’ from the establishment of the Committee of Public Safety on 6 April 1793 to his death on 28 July 1794

Digital Radio Policy In Canada: From Analog Replacement To Multimedia Convergence, Brian O'Neill Jan 2008

Digital Radio Policy In Canada: From Analog Replacement To Multimedia Convergence, Brian O'Neill

Articles

Digital radio policy in Canada has moved from a position of seeking to migrate all radio broadcasting onto a single digital transmission system (Eureka-147) to a multi-platform, cross-media and multimedia approach. The most recent digital radio policy of 2006 suggests a range of new possibilities for radio broadcasting, including multimedia broadcasting, but as a result has compromised the early adoption of the Eureka-147 standard. This paper contrasts the different policy contexts of 1995 and 2006 and argues that the competing technological options for digital audio delivery now pose significant dilemmas for broadcasters and policy makers.

Marketing First Impressions: Academic Libraries Creating Partnerships And Connections At New Student Orientations, James G. Rhoades Jr., Arianne Hartsell Jan 2008

Marketing First Impressions: Academic Libraries Creating Partnerships And Connections At New Student Orientations, James G. Rhoades Jr., Arianne Hartsell

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

Academic libraries look for successful marketing strategies to promote positive perceptions among students. To do this, librarians need to find venues and partnerships outside the library. Florida State University Libraries discovered that participating in new student orientation networking sessions creates opportunities to generate lasting first impressions among incoming freshmen and their families. After analyzing three years of successive student and family evaluations, which measured presentation rankings and attendance, the library was able to determine the utility and effectiveness of participating in the orientation program. Related literature and an analysis of the evaluations both indicate that universities and students benefit when …

A Study On The Use Of Ontologies To Represent Collective Knowledge, John Mcauley Jan 2008

A Study On The Use Of Ontologies To Represent Collective Knowledge, John Mcauley

Masters

The development of ontologies has become an area of considerable research interest over the past number of years. Domain ontologies are often developed to represent a shared understanding that in turn indicates cooperative effort by a user community. However, the structure and form that an ontology takes is predicated both on the approach of the developer and the cooperation of the user community. A shift has taken place in recent years from the use of highly specialised and expressive ontologies to simpler knowledge models, progressively developed by community contribution. It is within this context that this thesis investigates the use …

Control And The Protean Career: A Critical Perspective From The Multinational’S International Assignees, Marian Crowley-Henry, David Weir Jan 2008

Control And The Protean Career: A Critical Perspective From The Multinational’S International Assignees, Marian Crowley-Henry, David Weir

Articles

Mainstream management literature and research regarding the international career has long focused on the traditional expatriate experience. In this discourse the tendency has been to outline the benefits and issues to be considered for organizations and individuals embarking on international assignments. In contrast this chapter focuses on a special group whose positioning in the structures of employment and organization is in some ways exemplary of developing trends in the global labor force. They are the highly educated permanent expatriates who remain in the host country indefinitely (that is without a pre-determined organizational option of repatriation to their initial home country). …

A total of 361 SKS and five local S wave splitting measurements obtained at global and regional seismic network stations in NE China and Mongolia are used to infer the characteristics of mantle fabrics beneath northeast Asia. Fast polarization directions at most of the stations in the western part of the study area are found to be consistent with the strike of local geological features. The dominant fast directions at the eastern part, beneath which seismic tomography and receiver function studies revealed a deflected slab in the mantle transition zone (MTZ), are about 100° from north, which are almost exactly …

Rational Best-Value Model Based On Expected Performance, Magdy Abdelrahman, Tarek Zayed, Jay Hietpas, Ahmed Elwakil Jan 2008

Rational Best-Value Model Based On Expected Performance, Magdy Abdelrahman, Tarek Zayed, Jay Hietpas, Ahmed Elwakil

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The best-value procurement strategy is gaining the interest of federal and state agencies. The strategy increases the value added to a project for each dollar added. A new concept of best value, that is, a rational and flexible model based on expected performance, is presented. The model's flexibility is obvious in the selection of parameters to be included in the contractor selection process and in the determination of their weights. The model's rationality will be achieved through relating all awarded scores to the agency's expected performance. The establishment of the best-value model relies on the past record of the contractor's …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The United States Air Force (USAF) is implementing an integrated net-centric system of systems for airborne operations in support of the global war on terror (GWOT). The GWOT demands that a successful architecture framework transforms and delivers net-centric assets to the war-fighter in a timely manner. A critical component of this implementation is the transformation of legacy strategic air platforms into net-centric air power assets operating within a system of systems. The System Architectural (SA) framework, and the Department of Defense Architectural Framework (DoDAF) are ways of managing complexity and organizing information within a system of systems network. Groundwater Circulation Well Operation Using Wind Turbine–Generated Energy, Ron Gallagher, Andrew Curtis Elmore

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An investigation was conducted regarding the potential economic benefits associated with using a wind turbine to power a groundwater circulation well (GCW) at the former Nebraska Ordnance Plant Superfund site. the first phase of the investigation used a 10-kilowatt-rated grid inter-tie wind turbine to partially offset the purchase of electricity from the utility company. the second phase consisted of the conversion of the grid inter-tie system to an off-grid system that stored energy using batteries. during the second phase, the GCW system was operated using either wind turbine power or utility power, and the other system components were operated using …

Modeling The Fate Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In Sewage Treatment Plants, Craig D. Adams Jan 2008

Modeling The Fate Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In Sewage Treatment Plants, Craig D. Adams

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Chemical fate models can be used to estimate the transformation reactions and the partitioning behavior of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in sewage treatment plants (STPs). Modeling the fate of PPCPs in a STP requires parameters such as rate constants or partition coefficients that are often unique to a specific STP, and that may exhibit significant temporal variability. Chemical fate models provide both a valuable test of our understanding of the fundamental underlying mechanisms regarding the fate of PPCPs in STPs, as well as a means of providing both qualitative and quantitative estimates for PPCP removal. This paper is …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present experimental and theoretical fully differential cross sections for single ionization by fast, 1-keV (v=8.6 a.u.) electron impact. The cross sections were measured using a momentum imaging technique for electrons and ions (reaction microscope), which covers a large fraction of the emission angles for emitted low-energy electrons (EeV) and a wide range of scattering angles. Therefore comprehensive data sets are obtained for ionizing collisions at small relative momentum and energy transfer from the projectile to the target system. The experimental data are compared with predictions from several state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. At this high impact energy the calculated cross section …

Energy Harvesting Using Piezoelectric Materials And High Voltage Scavenging Circuitry, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Piezoelectric transducers are increasingly being used to harvest energy from environmental vibrations in order to power remote sensors or to charge batteries that power the sensors. In this paper, two modifications have been analyzed and tested to increase the harvested electrical power from a vibrating piezoelectric material. First, the voltage inversion method, which has recently been used in piezoelectricbased energy harvesting, and that shapes the voltage to be in phase with current in order to increase the harvested power is reviewed. By injecting additional current, a new voltage inversion scheme, referred as voltage compensation scheme, is introduced. This new scheme …

Generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Formulation-Based Neural Network Control Of Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Zheng Chen, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2008

Generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Formulation-Based Neural Network Control Of Affine Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Zheng Chen, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we consider the use of nonlinear networks towards obtaining nearly optimal solutions to the control of nonlinear discrete-time (DT) systems. The method is based on least squares successive approximation solution of the generalized Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (GHJB) equation which appears in optimization problems. Successive approximation using the GHJB has not been applied for nonlinear DT systems. The proposed recursive method solves the GHJB equation in DT on a well-defined region of attraction. The definition of GHJB, pre-Hamiltonian function, HJB equation, and method of updating the control function for the affine nonlinear DT systems under small perturbation assumption are proposed. …

Adhesion Enhancement Of Polymeric Films On Glass Surfaces By A Silane Derivative Of Azobisisobutyronitrile (Aibn)., Sudhir Mulik, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Nicholas Leventis Jan 2008

Adhesion Enhancement Of Polymeric Films On Glass Surfaces By A Silane Derivative Of Azobisisobutyronitrile (Aibn)., Sudhir Mulik, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Nicholas Leventis

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adhesion of polymeric films on surfaces can be due to a combination of van der Waals, electrostatic or covalent interactions between the two materials. The interfacial adhesion between a polymer film and glass or metal can be improved by using a broad class of silane coupling agents. Typically, silane coupling compounds used for adhesion improvement have structure similar to (R´O)3-Si-R, where R´O- is an alkoxy group and -R is an organofunctional group. Under appropriate reaction conditions alkoxy groups condense with hydroxyl groups available on the surface, resulting in surfaces decorated with organofunctional -R groups, which promote formation of covalent bonding …

Compressive Behavior Of Crosslinked Mesoporous Silica Aerogels At High Strain Rates, Hongbing Lu, H. Luo, Sudhir Mulik, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Nicholas Leventis Jan 2008

Compressive Behavior Of Crosslinked Mesoporous Silica Aerogels At High Strain Rates, Hongbing Lu, H. Luo, Sudhir Mulik, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Nicholas Leventis

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aerogels are low-density mesoporous materials with exceptionally low dielectric constants, low thermal conductivities (up to 40 times better thermal insulators than the best fiberglass) and high acoustic impedance. Their practical applications, however, have been slow due to their hydrophilicity and brittleness. The fragility problem was resolved by nanocasting a ~2-4 nm thick polymer layer on the skeletal silica nanoparticles that strengthens the weak inter-nanopartical necks. The thin polymer coats conformally the skeletal framework without clogging the mesopores and reinforces the structure by chemically crosslinking the nanoparticles. With a density increase by only three times, crosslinking aerogels have the flexural strength …

Glass Transition Behavior Of Poly(Methyl Acrylate) End-Grafted By Atrp To Amorphous Silica, Manikantan B. Nair, Frank D. Blum Jan 2008

Glass Transition Behavior Of Poly(Methyl Acrylate) End-Grafted By Atrp To Amorphous Silica, Manikantan B. Nair, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ultra-thin polymer films attached to solid substrates (supported films) have attracted significant interest in recent years. Supported films are used in the design of advanced materials like photoresists, lubricants and other electronic devices. Glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of supported polymer films have also been of significant interest. The Tg has been shown to depend on the thickness of the polymer film on the surface and the inherent nature of the surface. The effect of end-grafting of a polymer chain to a surface, on the Tg of the polymer has been studied previously.1 Reports on the study of glass transition behaviors …

Simulation Of The Evolution Of The Nanostructure Of Crosslinked Silica-Aerogels Under Compression, Hongbing Lu, Boshen Fu, Nitin Daphalapurkar, Jay Hanan, Nicholas Leventis, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Silica-aerogels are ultra-low-density assemblies of silica nanoparticles, and possess superior acoustic, specific energy absorption and thermal insulation properties. A new class of aerogels encapsulated with polymer is classified as crosslinked silica-aerogels. Manufacturing of such crosslinked silica-aerogel structures, depending on the type and shape of the nanoparticles, the polymer cross-linker and the chemistry in use, yields structures with vastly different morphologies and a wide range of mechanical behavior. With this, it has become necessary to understand the nanostructure / macroscopic properties relationship. Modeling of the aerogel material properties from mesoscale and up approach is needed, which is not considered by the …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

From a materials perspective, nanotechnology furnishes materials with useful macroscopic properties by manipulating matter in the 1-100 nm size regime. Improvements in performance in terms of strength, modulus and wetability are accomplished by, for example, introducing nanoparticles as fillers in plastics . Two issues that usually interfere with optimal materials performance are agglomeration of the nanoparticles and materials compatibility. Agglomeration cancels the advantage of using nanoparticulate matter as dopant, while lack of materials compatibility introduces a discontinuity at the polymer/dopant interface from where failure may begin. Agglomeration is encountered with surfactants that keep nanoparticles dispersed, while materials compatibility is improved …

Dynamics Of Adsorbed Pma-D₃ - Effect Of Substrate, Frank D. Blum, Burak Metin, Macduff O. Okuom

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the last few years, our group has focused much of our attention on studying the dynamics of polymers adsorbed at interfaces. Much of our work, to date has been on labeled poly(vinyl acetate)-d3 (PVAc-d3)1 and poly(methyl acrylate)-d3 (PMA-d3)2 on silica. We have been able to probe the effects of adsorbed amount,3 molecular mass,4,5 and the effect of overlayer.6 These studies have provided a view of the adsorbed polymer consistent with a motional gradient in the layer with the more mobile segments being those at the air-polymer interface and the less-mobile segments at the substratepolymer interface. However, we have not …

Dynamics Of Pipa-D₇ On Silica Surface, Piyawan Krisanangkura, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Molecular motion of polymer chains is an important determinant in understanding the physical properties of polymeric materials. Glass transition temperature (Tg) is a physical property of polymers, which is of primary interest. The study of the dynamics of polymer segments assists in understanding the dependence of Tg on polymer structure.1 For decades, studies have addressed the molecular motion in various polymers. Some of them have probed the dynamics of polymer backbones.2,3 the properties of a polymer at an interface may change because of the type of polymer, the substrate, or other variables. The side chain of a polymer can also …
