Self-Reported And Observed Cultural Competence And Therapeutic Alliance In Family Therapy, Carla C. Mayorga Nov 2008

Self-Reported And Observed Cultural Competence And Therapeutic Alliance In Family Therapy, Carla C. Mayorga

Open Access Dissertations

Because of its political and philosophical launching ground (Arredondo & Perez, 2006), cultural competence did not begin as an empirical research program, and as a result, there remains disagreement about how to define and measure cultural competence. Although the application of cultural competence remains unclear to some psychologists (Fuertes et al., 2006), it is now common knowledge that the therapeutic alliance is a statistically and clinically significant contributor to effective therapy. This pilot study merges two prominent bodies of literature, cultural competence and therapeutic alliance, with the underlying assumption that a culturally competent counselor will be able to provide effective …

Diplomacy Meets Conflict: Darfur, Sudan And The Limits Of International Diplomacy, Tinacho Chitongo Nov 2008

Diplomacy Meets Conflict: Darfur, Sudan And The Limits Of International Diplomacy, Tinacho Chitongo

Global Studies Student Scholarship

Despite claims that the world is generally more developed and stable than previous times in man's history there are places on earth where war is still the name of the game. Tactics such as rape, murder, vandalism and ethnic cleansing are still prevalent. The paper studies the complex issues confronting Africa's largest country, Sudan. The country stands on a fragile ceasefire that ended a 2 decade civil war in 2002. The main focus is on the Darfur region which is in Western Sudan. Rebels there began fighting in 2003 and the region has been something of a conundrum of violence. …

Mathematical Modeling Of Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Colleen Spiegel Nov 2008

Mathematical Modeling Of Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Colleen Spiegel

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fuel cells are predicted to be the power delivery devices of the future. They have many advantages such as the wide fuel selection, high energy density, high efficiency and an inherent safety which explains the immense interest in this power source. The need for advanced designs has been limited by the lack of understanding of the transport processes inside the fuel cell stack. The reactant gases undergo many processes in a fuel cell that cannot be observed. Some of these processes include convective and diffusional mass transport through various types of materials, phase change and chemical reaction. In order to …

Owss And Mimo-Stc-Ofdm: Signaling Systems For The Next Generation Of High Speed Wireless Lans, Dinesh Divakaran Nov 2008

Owss And Mimo-Stc-Ofdm: Signaling Systems For The Next Generation Of High Speed Wireless Lans, Dinesh Divakaran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current popularity of WLANs is a testament primarily to their convenience, cost efficiency and ease of integration. Even now the demand for high data rate wireless communications has increased fourfold as consumers demand better multimedia communications over the wireless medium. The next generation of high speed WLANs is expected to meet this increased demand for capacity coupled with high performance and spectral efficiency. The current generation of WLANs utilizes Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. The next generation of WLAN standards can be made possible either by developing a different modulation technique or combining legacy OFDM with Multiple Input …

Why The Incompatibility Clause Applies To The Office Of The President, Saikrishna Bangalore Prakash Nov 2008

Why The Incompatibility Clause Applies To The Office Of The President, Saikrishna Bangalore Prakash

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

Professor Saikrishna Bangalore Prakash responds to Mr. Seth Barret Tillman's Article and defends the traditional interpretation of the Incompatibility Clause, under which a President is prohibited from simultaneously serving as a congressional representative. The ramifications that would result if a President could also hold a position in the Senate or the House of Representatives, Professor Prakash argues, are too problematic for Mr. Tillman's reading to replace the traditional understanding of the Incompatibility Clause. Therefore, the next President, whether Senator McCain or Senator Obama, would need to resign from the Senate before assuming the Executive Office.

Why Our Next President May Keep His Or Her Senate Seat: A Conjecture On The Constitution’S Incompatibility Clause, Seth Barrett Tillman Nov 2008

Why Our Next President May Keep His Or Her Senate Seat: A Conjecture On The Constitution’S Incompatibility Clause, Seth Barrett Tillman

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

In this Article, Mr. Seth Barrett Tillman challenges the traditional interpretation of the Incompatibility Clause and argues that the President may serve both as the Chief Executive and as a member of Congress. Mr. Tillman utilizes the text, history, and structure of the Constitution to support his position. He ultimately concludes that whoever serves as the next President -- Senator Obama or Senator McCain -- need not resign from the Senate before assuming the Executive Office.

Re-Establishing Place Through Knowledge: A Facility For Earth Construction Education In Pisco, Peru, Hannah Jo Sebastian Nov 2008

Re-Establishing Place Through Knowledge: A Facility For Earth Construction Education In Pisco, Peru, Hannah Jo Sebastian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Human vulnerability can be characterized as people living with uncertain livelihood options, precariously settled in structurally unsafe buildings. A striking aspect of this vulnerability is the large number of people living in earthen structures within seismically active zones. This reality is exemplified by the earthquake which occurred this past summer around Pisco, Peru. The earthquake caused enormous damage to more than 80% of the adobe buildings. Although confined masonry is the preferred construction technique for families who can afford it, adobe is still the only economically viable alternative for most.

Presently reconstruction efforts are focused on encouraging residents to build …

Sedimentation Of Organic - Inorganic Composites By Optical Turbidity, Reshma K. Harrinauth Nov 2008

Sedimentation Of Organic - Inorganic Composites By Optical Turbidity, Reshma K. Harrinauth

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sedimentation is one of many characterization tools used to test materials in nanotechnology. Characterization of settling behavior is complex as there are many variables which can affect sedimentation. In our research, we focused on sedimentation in colloidal systems with the aid of an optical turbidometer. Nanoparticles of CeO2 (Ceria Oxide) and TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) are embedded onto a polymeric matrix of a thermally responsive microgel of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and interpenetrating chains of poly(acrylic acid) to create novel composites. The composites are loaded with the inorganic oxide nanoparticles at different weight percent from a low value of 10 weight …
