How Do Federal Programs Coordinators Navigate Under No Child Left Behind?: A Case Study Of Alabama, Donald R. Mcpherson

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative case study described the experiences of federal programs coordinators in Alabama as they implemented the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. Furthermore, this study identified a significant gap in research and other published literature that addresses the ongoing struggles faced by federal programs coordinators as they lead their colleagues and respective school systems in efforts to implement and ultimately comply with the numerous and stringent regulations regarding NCLB. The study brought to light and pinpointed a multitude of difficult and time-consuming tasks relating to adherence to NCLB guidelines. The researcher incorporated the professional perspectives and experiences …

Impact Of An Electronic Medical Record On Adherence To Current Diabetes Guidelines In A Family Medicine Center, Thomas Macandrew English

All ETDs from UAB

OBJECTIVE: Extensive research shows that diabetic care often falls below recommended guidelines. Many believe that Electronic Medical Records (EMR) have the ability to improve quality of care. The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the changes in diabetic care and outcomes pre and post EMR implementation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The study took place at the UAB Huntsville Family Medicine Center. A retrospective chart review was conducted in order to determine the impact of an EMR on diabetes care. This is a natural experiment that uses a pre post model in order to determine impact. Generalized Estimating Equations …

Using Rna Interference To Study The Function Of The Tethering Protein P115 In Er-Golgi Traffic, Robert Grabski Jan 2008

Using Rna Interference To Study The Function Of The Tethering Protein P115 In Er-Golgi Traffic, Robert Grabski

All ETDs from UAB

Metazoan cells are characterized with elaborate network of intracellular membranous compartments. These membranes allow the cell to spatially separate antagonistic processes and environments, and maintain sequential order of reactions necessary for maturation and secretion of biosynthetic cargo. The core transport machinery consists of coat proteins, tethering factors, SNAREs and small Ras-like GTPases. We have explored the function of the tethering factor p115 in organellogenesis and in secretory traffic. The p115-depleted system was utilized to explore structurefunction relationships within p115. Here, we analyzed the architecture of the Golgi after RNAi induced depletion of p115. We show that in p115 depleted cells …

Picking Up Rocks, Frankie M. Bradley

All ETDs from UAB

The five short stories in this collection focus thematically on the experiences of a fictional character named Elizabeth Fuller. Each story presents an episode in Fuller’s life in which she develops as an autonomous individual, making independent choices, recognizing her relationships to the surrounding world and other people. At the beginning of the writing process I proposed creating a collection in which transcendentalism served as the philosophical undercurrent in Fuller’s progression through various life stages, working in the literary and philosophical traditions of Thoreau, Hawthorne, Jewett, Alcott, Stoddard, and Dillard. Initially I tried too hard to create ‘transcendentalist’ writing, inundating …

The Barbary Wars: Ideology And Politics In Post-Revolutionary America, Christopher R. Null Jan 2008

The Barbary Wars: Ideology And Politics In Post-Revolutionary America, Christopher R. Null

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis examines the build-up to and the events of the First Barbary War (1801-1805) with the purpose of demonstrating that ideological factors significantly influenced the decision to go to war – specifically the republican ideology of Thomas Jefferson and his belief that this ideology represented the essence of the United States and its Revolutionary heritage. As such, Jefferson will be the main focus of this analysis. This focus is justified because it is Jefferson who broke with the policies set by his predecessors and directly engaged the Barbary States with military force. Therefore, to understand why the United States …

Trp-Ing Down A Trk: A New Role For Transient Receptor Potential Channels As Novel Mediators Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Actions At Both Sides Of The Excitatory Synapse, Michelle Dawn Amaral Jan 2008

Trp-Ing Down A Trk: A New Role For Transient Receptor Potential Channels As Novel Mediators Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Actions At Both Sides Of The Excitatory Synapse, Michelle Dawn Amaral

All ETDs from UAB

Over the years, various roles for neurotrophins have been revealed, being initially described as survival signals for neurons making their initial synaptic contacts in the developing brain. Eventually, it was discovered that these molecules also play important modulatory roles in the adult brain. The work encompassed in this dissertation serves to characterize one particular neurotrophin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which has been implicated in long-term potentiation (LTP), and its effects at CA3-CA1 synapses in the hippocampus following acute application in vitro. To this end, we have demonstrated the presence of a novel, non-selective cationic current that is initiated by BDNF …

The Public Domain: Enclosing The Commons Of The Mind, James Boyle

Faculty Scholarship

Our music, our culture, our science and our economic welfare all depend on a delicate balance between those ideas that are controlled and those that are free, between intellectual property and the public domain. In his award-winning book, The Public Domain: Enclosing the Commons of the Mind (Yale University Press) James Boyle introduces readers to the idea of the public domain and describes how it is being tragically eroded by our current copyright, patent, and trademark laws. In a series of fascinating case studies, Boyle explains why gene sequences, basic business ideas and pairs of musical notes are now owned, …

Student Satisfaction With Online Learning Effectiveness At A Connecticut Community College, Alina R. Payne Jan 2008

Student Satisfaction With Online Learning Effectiveness At A Connecticut Community College, Alina R. Payne

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In recent years, institutions of higher education have dramatically increased the number of online courses and degree programs offered to students, and yet it remains unclear what factors determine student satisfaction with online course and instructor effectiveness. Accordingly, the purpose of this exploratory correlation study was to examine how factors related to courses and instructors contributed to student perceptions of course quality (CQ) and instructor effectiveness (IE). Six stepwise regression procedures assessed the effects of specific course and instructor characteristics on perceptions of CQ and IE across one year of course evaluation data collected in a northeastern 2-year college. Results …

Tax Discrimination And Trade In Services: The Search For Balance In Canada-U.S. Relations, Christine Manolakas, Catherine Brown

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

The trading relationship between Canada and the United States represents the largest bilateral flow of goods and services in the world. Notwithstanding this significant trade relationship and the obligations of non-discrimination assumed under trade agreements, both countries boast tax legislation that may negatively impact the competitive position of service providers of the other country. This article examines some of these tax measures and compares the tax treatment of nonresident service providers performing services in the other country to the tax treatment of domestic service providers. The article also considers the tax treatment of the domestic entity hiring the service provider. …

The Relationship Between Corportate Social Responsibility And Shareholder Value: An Empirical Test Of The Risk Management Hypothesis, Paul C. Godfrey, Craig B. Merrill, Jared M. Hansen Jan 2008

The Relationship Between Corportate Social Responsibility And Shareholder Value: An Empirical Test Of The Risk Management Hypothesis, Paul C. Godfrey, Craig B. Merrill, Jared M. Hansen

Do shareholders gain when managers disperse corporate resources through activities classified as corporate social responsibility (CSR)? Strategy scholars have recently developed a theoretical model that links such activities to shareholder value when a firm suffers a negative event; we test key portions of this theory of the ‘insurance-like’ property of CSR activity. We posit that such activity leads to positive attributions from stakeholders, who then temper their negative judgments and sanctions toward firms because of this goodwill. We extend the risk management model by theorizing that some types of CSR activities will be more likely to create goodwill and offer …

Ethical Plea Bargaining Under The Texas Disciplinary Rules Of Professional Conduct., Edward L. Wilkinson Jan 2008

Ethical Plea Bargaining Under The Texas Disciplinary Rules Of Professional Conduct., Edward L. Wilkinson

St. Mary's Law Journal

Plea bargaining is such an essential component of the administration of justice that disposition of charges after plea discussions is not only an essential part of the process but a highly desirable part for many reasons. Even though 95% of felony criminal cases nationwide are resolved through plea bargaining, there are no specific ethical rules governing the practice. The exhortation in article 2.01 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure states it is the primary duty of all prosecuting attorneys to see that justice is done, rather than merely convicting. In order to determine the ethical boundaries of plea bargaining, …

A Pragmatic Look At Mediation And Collaborative Law As Alternatives To Family Law Litigation Comment., Elizabeth F. Beyer Jan 2008

A Pragmatic Look At Mediation And Collaborative Law As Alternatives To Family Law Litigation Comment., Elizabeth F. Beyer

St. Mary's Law Journal

Since close to half the country’s marriages end in divorce, marriage dissolution is quite a lucrative business for attorneys. Also, fewer people are entering marriage in the first place. Fewer marriages combined with more children born out of wedlock create multitudinous legal problems and family disputes centering around those children. In addition to initial divorce filings and suits affecting the parent-child relationship, dissolution of marriage cases often creates additional litigation down the road. As a solution to the problems caused by the expense and toil of this litigation, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) offers several options for family disputants. Two popular …
