Quasiclassical Description Of Bremsstrahlung Accompanying Α Decay Including Quadrupole Radiation, Ulrich D. Jentschura, A. I. Milstein, Ivan S. Terekhov, H. Boie, Heiko Scheit, Dirk Schwalm

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a quasiclassical theory of α decay accompanied by bremsstrahlung with a special emphasis on the case of 210Po, with the aim of finding a unified description that incorporates both the radiation during the tunneling through the Coulomb wall and the finite energy Eγ of the radiated photon up to Eγ~Qα | √/η, where Qα is the α-decay Q-value and η is the Sommerfeld parameter. The corrections with respect to previous quasiclassical investigations are found to be substantial, and excellent agreement with a full quantum mechanical treatment is achieved. Furthermore, we find that …

Fine-Grained Reputation-Based Routing In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Alma Cemerlic Jan 2008

Fine-Grained Reputation-Based Routing In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Alma Cemerlic

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Ad hoc networks are very helpful in situations when no fixed network infrastructure is available. They are especially important in emergency situations such as natural disasters and military conflicts. Most developed wireless ad hoc routing protocols are designed to discover and maintain an active path from source to destination with an assumption that every node is friendly and cooperative. However, it is possible that the participating nodes are selfish or malicious. A mechanism to evaluate reputation for each node is essential for the reliability and security of routing protocol in ad hoc networks. We propose a fine-grained reputation system for …

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Stop No Evil: How Do We Uncover And Combat The Loss Of Educational Opportunity For American Poor?, Sarah M. Stitzlein

The University Dialogue

In my position paper, I will urge Americans to fulfill the promise of equal educational opportunity and to avoid further entrenchment of the cycle of poverty. Some residents of largely homogeneous New Hampshire tend to be less knowledgeable about issues of racial resegregation, because racial difference is rarely seen and cries of racial inequality are not heard. Additionally some view social class struggles as a problem of remote northern NH or of particular dilapidated cities in the south. My paper will combat these shortsighted views by foregrounding the pervasive lack of educational opportunity for local poor. This will initiate conversation …

Optimal Packings Of Up To 6 Equal Circles On A Triangular Flat Torus, Anna Castelaz, William Dickinson, Daniel Guillot, Sandi Xhumari Jan 2008

Optimal Packings Of Up To 6 Equal Circles On A Triangular Flat Torus, Anna Castelaz, William Dickinson, Daniel Guillot, Sandi Xhumari

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

How do you optimally pack equal circles into the standard triangular torus? In this paper, we proved the optimal packings of 1 through 6 equal circles. In order to do this we used techniques from graph theory and also mathematical softwares like Maple and LaTeX. I only worked on proving the optimal packing of 6 equal circles on this special container called the standard triangular torus. In addition, I also contributed in improving the previous proofs for 5 or less equal circles. The purpose of my research was to prove the best packing of 6 equal circles into this at …

Can Silicon Carbide Nanotubes Be Effective Storage Medium For Hydrogen Storage?, Souptik Mukherjee Jan 2008

Can Silicon Carbide Nanotubes Be Effective Storage Medium For Hydrogen Storage?, Souptik Mukherjee

Physics Theses - Archive

A systematic study of molecular hydrogen adsorption on three different atomic configurations of armchair SICNTs has been performed. In the first stage of our study, first principles calculations using both density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid density functional theory (HDFT) as well as the finite cluster approximation have been performed to study the adsorption of molecular hydrogen on three types of armchair (9, 9) silicon carbide nanotubes. The distances of molecular hydrogen from the outer wall of the nanotubes have been optimized manually using the B3LYP and PW91 functionals and results have been compared in detail with published literature results. …

Physics Faculty Publications - Archive

Monodisperse L10-FePt nanoparticles with size ranging from 3 to 8 nm were prepared by the salt-matrix annealing method. It was observed that the annealed particles have high thermal stability—no sintering occurred even when the particles were heated at 1100 °C for an hour. This high thermal stability resulted from carbon coating of the particles during salt-matrix annealing as consequence of decomposition of surfactants.

Ferrimagnetism And Magnetic Entropy Change For Tm/Re Multilayers, Maria Rodica Hossu Jan 2008

Ferrimagnetism And Magnetic Entropy Change For Tm/Re Multilayers, Maria Rodica Hossu

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Multilayers of Co/Tb, Ni/Gd, NiFe/Gd, CoFe/Gd and CoNi/Gd multilayers have been synthesized using dc magnetron sputtering and have been investigated experimentally by SQUID magnetometry. Due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between the transition metal and rare earth layers these systems behave like artificial ferrimagnets, with a minimum in total magnetic moment at compensation temperature. The measurement of magnetic moment (M) as a function of temperature (T) shows that magnetic phase transition occurs at different temperatures during the heating (superheating) and cooling (supercooling) cycles resulting in thermal hysteresis curve for M (T). Magnetic entropy change has been measured for CoFe/Gd and CoNi/Gd …

Electron Emission From Surfaces Resulting From Low Energy Positron Bombardment, Saurabh Mukherjee Jan 2008

Electron Emission From Surfaces Resulting From Low Energy Positron Bombardment, Saurabh Mukherjee

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Measurements of the secondary electron energy spectra resulting from very low energy positron bombardment of a polycrystalline Au and Cu (100) surfaces are presented that provide evidence for a single step transition from an unbound scattering state to an image potential bound state. The primary positron energy threshold for secondary electron emission and energy cutoff of the positron induced secondary electron energy peak are consistent with an Auger like process in which an incident positron make a transition from a scattering state to a surface-image potential bound while transferring all of the energy difference to an outgoing secondary electron. We …

Eighteenth-Century Gothic Novels And Gendered Spaces: What's Left To Say, Gretchen M. Cohenour Jan 2008

Eighteenth-Century Gothic Novels And Gendered Spaces: What's Left To Say, Gretchen M. Cohenour

Open Access Dissertations

This study employs Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto , Ann Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho, and Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey to evidence how gender differences are reinforced or revised in specific domestic spaces in early British Gothic novels. This study conceptualizes space and place in terms of social relations including gender, class, politics, and geography. Concepts of gender and productions of idealized female and male behavior in particular places create "gendered spaces." Examining social boundaries frequently reveals domestic spaces and the objects they contain, oftentimes identifying these objects with gender or function. I suggest that our understanding and experience of domestic …

A Study Of Formaldehyde Sources In Air, Haiwei Shen Jan 2008

A Study Of Formaldehyde Sources In Air, Haiwei Shen

Open Access Dissertations

Formaldehyde (CH2O) is a central component of photooxidation chemistry. The atmospheric sources of CH2O involve a complex mixture of biogenic and anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study explores the geographical and altitudinal variations of CH2O production from its precursors over the Eastern U.S. and assesses the contributions from biogenic and anthropogenic VOC emissions to atmospheric CH2O. Measurements of airborne CH2O and hydrocarbons over North America and model results were used to evaluate CH2O production from its precursors. Source attribution results from a photochemical box model indicate 95% of the CH2O arose in various proportions from a mixture of methane, …

The Problem Of Religious Learning, Marc O. Degirolami Jan 2008

The Problem Of Religious Learning, Marc O. Degirolami

Faculty Publications

The problem of religious learning is that religion—including the teaching about religion—must be separated from liberal public education, but that the two cannot be entirely separated if the aims of liberal public education are to be realized. It is a problem that has gone largely unexamined by courts, constitutional scholars, and other legal theorists. Though the U.S. Supreme Court has offered a few terse statements about the permissibility of teaching about religion in its Establishment Clause jurisprudence, and scholars frequently urge policies for or against such controversial subjects as Intelligent Design or graduation prayers, insufficient attention has been paid to …

Jules, Emily Oye Jan 2008

Jules, Emily Oye

Theses and Dissertations

The short play Jules is a response to August Strindberg's Miss Julie and Patrick Marber's After Miss Julie. Jules is the story of a wealthy young woman celebrating her Sweet 16 birthday at a lavish "Juicy Couture" theme party in Orange County, California. At the party, her best friend tries to disuade her from falling for a young Mexican immigrant who is catering the party. Jules explores the tensions between rich and poor, the attitude of the privilaged towards the working class, the consequences of relationships, and the attitude that characterizes our "girls gone wild" era.
