The Dimensionality Of Emotion And Individual Differences, Leah Braganza Jan 2008

The Dimensionality Of Emotion And Individual Differences, Leah Braganza

Theses : Honours

This paper is a critical review of the research on the relative contribution of valence and arousal to the effect of emotion on performance. It is well accepted that emotion influences aspects of cognitive performance, but there are inconsistent results concerning the relative salience of valence and arousal. Some authors support the idea that valence, rather than arousal, is the primary contributor to this effect of emotion on performance. This review analysed the methodology used in studies supporting the primary role of valence, and this analysis revealed that the two dimensions may have been confounded. The literature suggested that arousal …

The Relationship Between Nicotine Dependence And Symptoms Of Anxiety, Depression And Stress In A Therapeutic Community For Alcohol And Other Drug Rehabilitation, Thomas Hopkins Jan 2008

The Relationship Between Nicotine Dependence And Symptoms Of Anxiety, Depression And Stress In A Therapeutic Community For Alcohol And Other Drug Rehabilitation, Thomas Hopkins

Theses : Honours

Smoking tobacco is the largest single risk factor for premature death in developed countries. It is also associated with the greatest economic cost of all drugs in Australian society. In addition to the health and economic consequences associated with smoking, it has also been associated with mental health problems. Smoking has been associated with anxiety, depression and stress, as well as more pervasive disorders such as panic disorder and agoraphobia. It is not clear whether smoking contributes to mental health problems or individuals with mental health problems smoke to alleviate symptoms. It may be there are genetic factors that contribute …

Host Community Acculturation Expectations Toward Immigrant Groups; An Evaluation Of Theoretical Models, Perspectives, And Factors Encouraging The Development Of Multicultural Societies, Carmen Vakis Jan 2008

Host Community Acculturation Expectations Toward Immigrant Groups; An Evaluation Of Theoretical Models, Perspectives, And Factors Encouraging The Development Of Multicultural Societies, Carmen Vakis

Theses : Honours

The ability of immigrants to integrate into a new society is dependent on a number of factors including the strength of an immigrant's ethnic identity, willingness of the immigrant to accept the beliefs, values, and cultural practices of the host society, and attitudes of members of the host society toward immigrants. This paper reviews research on attitudes toward immigration, in relation to theoretical approaches including Berry's (2003) model of acculturation expectations. Factors discussed throughout this review as contributing to host community acceptance of immigrants include cultural awareness and understanding, preconceived misconceptions and stereotypes, and perceptions of threat to resources and …

Do We Want To Measure The Quality Of Care For Vulnerable Older People? The Acove Approach., Neil S. Wenger Jan 2008

Do We Want To Measure The Quality Of Care For Vulnerable Older People? The Acove Approach., Neil S. Wenger

Center for Policy Research

There's limited information available about measuring the quality of medical care that is targeted to the needs of older patients. And there's very limited pressure on the system to provide high quality geriatric care. Why is that? Because the quality measures haven't been adequately developed and implemented, and it's more difficult to measure care for an older sample. Measuring care for ill older adults is complex, because they tend to have multiple medical conditions, and they demonstrate substantial variation in goals for care (Wenger and colleagues 2007). The Assessing Care of Vulnerable Elders (ACOVE) project began in 1998 as a …

Testing For Heteroskedasticity And Serial Correlation In A Random Effects Panel Data Model, Badi H. Baltagi, Byoung Cheol Jung, Seuck Heun Song Jan 2008

Testing For Heteroskedasticity And Serial Correlation In A Random Effects Panel Data Model, Badi H. Baltagi, Byoung Cheol Jung, Seuck Heun Song

Center for Policy Research

This paper considers a panel data regression model with heteroskedastic as well as serially correlated disturbances, and derives a joint LM test for homoskedasticity and no first order serial correlation. The restricted model is the standard random individual error component model. It also derives a conditional LM test for homoskedasticity given serial correlation, as well as a conditional LM test for no first order serial correlation given heteroskedasticity, all in the context of a random effects panel data model. Monte Carlo results show that these tests, along with their likelihood ratio alternatives, have good size and power under various forms …

Financial Development And Openness: Evidence From Panel Data, Badi H. Baltagi, Panicos O. Demetriades, Siong Hook Law Jan 2008

Financial Development And Openness: Evidence From Panel Data, Badi H. Baltagi, Panicos O. Demetriades, Siong Hook Law

Center for Policy Research

This paper addresses the empirical question of whether trade and financial openness can help explain the recent pace in financial development, as well as its variation across countries in recent years. Utilizing annual data from developing and industrialized countries and dynamic panel estimation techniques, we provide evidence which suggests that both types of openness are statistically significant determinants of banking sector development. Our findings reveal that the marginal effects of trade (financial) openness are negatively related to the degree of financial (trade) openness, indicating that relatively closed economies stand to benefit most from opening up their trade and/or capital accounts. …

Public School Choice And Integration: Evidence From Durham, North Carolina, Robert Bifulco, Helen F. Ladd, Stephen Ross Jan 2008

Public School Choice And Integration: Evidence From Durham, North Carolina, Robert Bifulco, Helen F. Ladd, Stephen Ross

Center for Policy Research

Using evidence from Durham, North Carolina, we examine the impact of school choice programs on racial and class-based segregation across schools. Theoretical considerations suggest that how choice programs affect segregation will depend not only on the family preferences emphasized in the sociology literature but also on the linkages between student composition, school quality and student achievement emphasized in the economics literature. Reasonable assumptions about the distribution of preferences over race, class, and school characteristics suggest that the segregating choices of students from advantaged backgrounds are likely to outweigh any integrating choices by disadvantaged students. The results of our empirical analysis …

Research-Based Teaching At Universities: A Case Study Of Kmutt, Wipawee Iemworamate Jan 2008

Research-Based Teaching At Universities: A Case Study Of Kmutt, Wipawee Iemworamate

EDU-COM International Conference

Traditionally, university teaching is predominantly lecture-based. An alternative approach to teaching is research-based teaching in which teachers change their roles to mentors and students change their roles to researchers. This study compares students‘ evaluations of the two approaches. The hypothesis of the study is that students taught with a research-based approach were likely to evaluate the teaching higher than those students taught with a lecture-based one. The subject population were students enrolled at King Mongkut‘s University of Technology Thonburi, which primarily focuses on science and technology. The subject samples were undergraduate students enrolled in two social studies courses, taught for …

Attitudes Toward Teacher Styles And Teaching Styles In An International Business Management Program: Case Study Comparison, Ruchirat Patanathabutr Jan 2008

Attitudes Toward Teacher Styles And Teaching Styles In An International Business Management Program: Case Study Comparison, Ruchirat Patanathabutr

EDU-COM International Conference

The researcher utilized a descriptive method of research, and the data was interpreted, analysed, discussed and presented by using the descriptive-analytical one. The objective was to identify the teacher styles and the teaching styles that encourage lifelong learning in an International Business Management (IBM) program comparing a native English-speaking university (Whitworth University, USA) with a non-native English-speaking one (Payap University, Thailand). The results showed that satisfactory teacher styles and teaching styles encouraged students toward lifelong learning. The styles have to be equally balanced between teacher styles: teacher-oriented method, task participation of students, and independent study, and teaching styles: based on …

Teacher‟S Autonomy Support And Esl Classroom Engagement: The Road Less Traveled, Rajaletchumi Thaliah, Rosna Awang Hashim Jan 2008

Teacher‟S Autonomy Support And Esl Classroom Engagement: The Road Less Traveled, Rajaletchumi Thaliah, Rosna Awang Hashim

EDU-COM International Conference

This study investigated the construct of Teacher Autonomy Support Scale (TASS) in the context of ESL classroom in Malaysia and how it influenced student‘s classroom engagement. The sample comprised 378 students from 14 day schools in a rural area. An empirical study (N=378) was conducted to explore aspects of reliability and validity of the TASS. Confirmatory Factor Analysis via AMOS (7.0) showed evidence of convergent validity of the newly developed scale. A covariance structural analysis shows that teacher‘s autonomy support is a significant predictor for cognitive and behavioural engagement for students in ESL classroom.

Students Ranking, Based On Their Abilities On Objective Type Test: Comparison Of Ctt And Irt, Amir Zaman, Atiq-Ur-Rehman Kashmiri, Mamoon Mubarak, Arshad Ali Jan 2008

Students Ranking, Based On Their Abilities On Objective Type Test: Comparison Of Ctt And Irt, Amir Zaman, Atiq-Ur-Rehman Kashmiri, Mamoon Mubarak, Arshad Ali

EDU-COM International Conference

The focus of this paper is to investigate the idea of differential ability for students ranking on a multiple choice test in the subject of physics at secondary level. The weakness of Classical Test Theory (CTT) in measuring the ability with continuity and consequently its ranking ability of students on the basis of ability has been highlighted in this paper. In CTT, a student attempting a difficult question and an easy question get equal credit which is not the case in Item Response Theory (IRT). Moreover in CTT two students with equal raw score have the same ranking while in …

Redesigning Public Speaking: A Case Study In The Use Of Instructional Design To Create The Interchange Model, Marlene M. Preston, J. Matt Giglio, Kristin N. English

Basic Communication Course Annual

This case study describes the redesign of Public Speaking at a Research I institution. An instructional analysis revealed strengths of and concerns about the existing model--large lecture with small lab sections. Criteria for a new model emerged from that analysis, all of which hinged on an overarching goal: The course should incorporate learning theory and disciplinary theory and should result in student learning, student skill development, and enhanced satisfaction among stakeholders. The Interchange Model, which included some online delivery, was developed to meet identified needs and was fleshed out with course materials and semester plans. The model was piloted and …

Breast Health Behavior Among Lesbians: The Role Of Health Beliefs, Heterosexism, And Homophobia, Dana Dehart Jan 2008

Breast Health Behavior Among Lesbians: The Role Of Health Beliefs, Heterosexism, And Homophobia, Dana Dehart

Faculty and Staff Publications

The Health Belief Model was used as a conceptual framework for exploring how health beliefs and perceptions of heterosexism and homophobia in health care relate to lesbians' breast health behaviors, including use of breast exams and mammograms, visits to health care providers, and use of complementary/alternative care. A total of 173 exclusively homosexual women completed survey measures assessing health beliefs, experiences of heterosexism/homophobia, and health maintenance behaviors as these related to breast health. Findings indicated that women perceived heterosexism and homophobia from providers to influence the amount of discussion they had with providers and, to a lesser extent, care received, …

Web-Scale Workflow: Integrating Distributed Services, M. Brian Blake, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2008

Web-Scale Workflow: Integrating Distributed Services, M. Brian Blake, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

Modular applications, components, and services are all ways of describing the product of an organization's efforts to embody its capabilities in autonomous software modules. In fact, the integration of services using well-established workflow paradigms could amplify an organization's capabilities with the creation of a full-blown, inter-organizational system of systems. This is the essence of Web-scale workflows. Considering the recent popularity and acceptance of service-oriented technologies, the application of such distributed systems is only limited by imagination, but it's also important to understand existing research challenges and their implications to various Web-scale workflow domains.

Knowledge Sharing: Using Searchable Email Databases, Frank Wedgeworth Jan 2008

Knowledge Sharing: Using Searchable Email Databases, Frank Wedgeworth

Dissertations

In today’s knowledge driven economy, a company’s intellectual capital is increasingly becoming its most important asset. The knowledge of how to create value defines a company’s success. Through knowledge management the value of knowledge within a company can be increased. One way of increasing the value of knowledge is by making it more accessible. The accessibility of knowledge can be facilitated by integrating the search for knowledge into the user’s workflow. Another way to increase the value of knowledge is through the capture of undocumented, tacit knowledge and converting it into explicit, documented knowledge. Email has been identified as the …

Investigation Of The Visual Aspects Of Business Intelligence, Niall Cunningham

Dissertations

As the need for Irish firms to move into knowledge economy increases knowledge management is being more important. Among its central aims is for knowledge creation and development to enhance knowledge and inspire innovations. One of the ways knowledge management achieves these aims is through the development of knowledge management tools for the firm. Among these tools is the option to use business intelligence to enhance knowledge in the firm by exposing hidden knowledge and building on it. In particular data mining has been highlighted as being effective within business intelligence and knowledge management in discovering hidden knowledge. This dissertation …

Geometric And Extra-Geometric Spatial Conceptualisation: A Cross-Linguistic And Non-Verbal Perspective, Anne Crum-Lindqvist Jan 2008

Geometric And Extra-Geometric Spatial Conceptualisation: A Cross-Linguistic And Non-Verbal Perspective, Anne Crum-Lindqvist

School of Psychology Theses

Almost all past empirical work exploring the Functional Geometric Framework (FGF) proposed by Coventry and Garrod (2004) for spatial language use has been based on a single language - English. Therefore the extent to which the framework applies across languages has not been established. The current thesis investigated whether geometric and extra-geometric factors affect production and comprehension of spatial language across three languages; English, Finnish and Spanish. Eight cross-linguistic appropriateness rating studies identified similarities and differences in the factors that underlie our verbal conceptualisation of space across three classes of spatial relations/terms: 1) topological relations (e.g., in/on), 2) vertical axis …

Pesticides And Children: Unwitting Participants In Experimentation, Valerie Watnick Jan 2008

Pesticides And Children: Unwitting Participants In Experimentation, Valerie Watnick

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the regulatory system in the United States has failed to adequately protect children from the dangers of toxic pesticides, particularly Malathion and Lindane, which are used in shampoos despite their well-documented health risks. The Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) was intended to address these risks but has not been effectively enforced, leaving children, especially those in underserved populations, vulnerable to severe health consequences. The continued approval of these harmful products highlights a broader regulatory failure to prioritize human health over industrial interests.

The Changing Faces Of Women's Colleges: Striking A Balance Between Transgender Rights And Women's Colleges' Right To Exclude, Cathy Perifimos

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note explores the tension between women's colleges' traditional mission of providing single-sex education and the rights of transgender students, arguing for the need to balance these interests through clear policies and legal frameworks.
