The Teaching Of Elementary School Science In The Pre And Post No Child Left Behind Era: For Better Or Worse?, Jeffrey K. Perkins

Graduate Research Papers

A major problem confronting science education is the barriers elementary teachers face in teaching science. The reform efforts of the 1970's led initially to increased devotion of time in the area of science. The report "A Nation at Risk" published in the 1980's exposed the neglect of the American education system and helped lead to the establishment of standards and benchmarks for all school subjects.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the current state of elementary science in the No Child Left Behind [NCLB] school environment and compare this to the previous status of teaching science in the …

The Viability Of Learning Journals As An Instructional Methodology For Adult Learners, Gale R. Mazur

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study used student and faculty focus groups to examine learning journals' effectiveness as an instructional methodology for adults enrolled in undergraduate and graduate Organizational Leadership (OL) degree programs. Learning journals are assigned to encourage reflection; however, concerns have arisen from student complaints that they constitute busywork. The study's purpose was to examine learning journals' viability by determining to what extent they deepened and broadened students' understanding of leadership, generated greater self-awareness, provided a leadership development tool, and encouraged the application of leadership knowledge. Developing A Regional Learning Center For Engineering, Kenneth W. Santarelli

Theses and Dissertations

Antelope Valley is a burgeoning distant suburb of Los Angeles that is demanding new services from colleges and universities. This study investigated industry and community needs for engineering curriculum in order to inform the state university's planning and decision-making. The study employed mixed methods as part of an action-research approach by the newly state-appointed Director of Engineering Programs in three consecutive phases, January through June 2008. Phase I included mailed surveys to 156 active engineering-related organizations; Phase II assessed selected senior personnel's perceptions through long, semi-structured interviews; Phase III integrated an analysis of the state university's local learning center plan, …

A Grounded Theory Study Of The Leadership Characteristics Of John F. Kennedy: A Leadership Model For Educational Leaders, Kanika D. Colvin-White

Theses and Dissertations

Adverse challenges in schools that distract from student learning have necessitated effective leadership more than ever before. These challenges include, but are not limited to, budget cuts, standardized testing, poorly trained teachers, poverty, and low parent participation. Every school year academic administrators approach the aforementioned challenges with the hope of improving student achievement. However, without effective practices to foster and sustain student achievement, often, their efforts are in vain. As school districts recruit and deploy leaders, it is critical to select those who have passion to foster positive change. It is equally important to hire administrators who possess those characteristics …

Using The Task Technology Fit Model As A Diagnostic Tool For Electronic Medical Records Systems Evaluation, Carol A. Kilmon, Mary Helen Fagan, Vivek Pandey, Thomas Belt Jan 2008

Using The Task Technology Fit Model As A Diagnostic Tool For Electronic Medical Records Systems Evaluation, Carol A. Kilmon, Mary Helen Fagan, Vivek Pandey, Thomas Belt

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems offer health care organizations numerous potential benefits. However, it can be difficult to ascertain whether users are satisfied with such systems, and if not, where concerns exist. Organizations wishing to evaluate a health care system implementation like an EMR system can choose from a variety of approaches that have been developed in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. After evaluating a number of alternatives, the researchers selected the Task Technology Fit (TTF) model and its associated instrument as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the implementation of the first phase of an EMR at a university hospital. …

Liberty, Judicial Review, And The Rule Of Law At Guantanamo: A Battle Half Won, Douglass Cassel

Journal Articles

In Boumediene v. Bush, 128 S. Ct. 2229 (2008), five members of the Supreme Court held that foreign prisoners at Guantanamo enjoy the constitutional privilege of habeas corpus; that their imprisonment had lasted too long for the Court to await completion of statutory review by lower courts of military tribunal findings that the prisoners were "enemy combatants"; and that the statutory judicial review was too deficient to substitute for the Great Writ.

Four Justices vigorously dissented. On the surface they differed on the history of the reach of the common law writ of habeas corpus, and on the procedural …

Change in American higher education is occurring at a rapid pace. The increasing reemergence of civic or community engagement as a key component in the overall landscape of American higher is emblematic of that change. Academic departments play a critical role in higher education change, including institutionalizing community engagement on campuses. Assault Upon The Citadel Of Privity: The Coexistence Of Strict, Privity And Belt V. Oppenheimer, Blend, Harrison & (And) Tate, Inc. Comment., C. John Muller Iv

St. Mary's Law Journal

The practicing attorney must have a complete understanding of legal malpractice liability. Managing this risk can be a precarious responsibility when the law is not clearly defined. This is compounded by the steady erosion of attorney-client privity barriers making it easier for third party non-clients to sue lawyers for legal malpractice. This is the current state of matters in Texas since the Texas Supreme Court decided Belt v. Oppenheimer, Blend, Harrison & Tate, Inc. on May 5, 2006. The Belt court determined personal representatives of an estate may bring a malpractice claim against the decedent’s attorneys. The Belt court was …

Henry F. Johnson Professor Of Law (1981-2008), St. Mary's University School Of Law Tribute., Bonita K. Roberts

St. Mary's Law Journal

As a way to deal with his loss, this eulogy honors Henry Johnson (1942-2008) by focusing on ten good things about him. As a former English teacher, he valued clarity and precision, which reflects another good thing about Henry: the importance of strong organization. His zest for travel enabled him to share voluminous details about countless countries around the world, including where the best restaurants and wineries were. No description would be complete without emphasizing his love for golf, but the most important thing about Henry was the way he cared for his family, friends, and animals.
